  1. Sine/Cosine/Tangent and graphing where we needed the graphing calculators would come later. In fifth grade I remember doing long division by hand. Maybe they need to check their long division (or maybe it's a cop-out I dunno).
  2. It's true I hate chores, but spending time with my daughter is a pleasure. I absolutly love to be with her, it's exciting and close not tedious at all. I imagine most dads feel this way.:)
  3. The USSR had many economic problems and was likely ready to collapse anyways. Reagan's weapons buildup delivered a solid kick to the whole weak infrastructure. And the economy was going strong in Novemeber 1988 when Daddy Bush beat Dukakis. "It's the economy stupid" was Bill Clinton's theme four years later in 1992 when the country was in a recession.

  5. Dan's Animal Testing Survey Age?36 Gender? Male Education? BA some grad school Occupation? ESL teacher Do you think it’s right to test products on animals? Yes, absolutly. Do you feel that it should be FDA required to test on animals? Yes, otherwise it wouldn't be safe to begin testing on/selling to people. What would be a good alternative to animal testing? None. Selling things without testing them on animals to see if they cause any harmful side effects would be very dangerous.
  6. Who's right, the pastor or the woman? I don't know and I don't care, it's none of my business since I don't belong to the church. But I do know the pastor screwed up big time. Intra-church politics shouldn't be handled in courts or by calling the police come in. Doing that opens it up to the media, opens everybody up for criticism and makes everybody looks bad. Uping the ante to involve the secular authorities is overstepping. Things like this need to be dealt with in house. I would hope every seminary student would read this article as a warning of what not to do in a squabble with congregation members. If there's a crime such as molestation or swindling of church finances, that's another story.
  7. LOL. Maybe. Generally, kids love two kinds of chemistry experiments ... ones that explode and ones that stink.
  8. Nasty woman, are you talking about ammonium sulfide by chance? I don't think Colleen is willing to get banned from the library for life, but wouldn't it be fun to go out in a blaze of glory?
  9. I often think people around here are too strict as well. Now I haven't seen Joshua, but letting preteens watch R-rated horror movies isn't a very good idea. Sorry you have to put up with this. Joanne, what was your kids' reaction was to the movie?
  10. This is why I love this WTM site -OK, besides the comradarie, I love that too- but as a new dad this is what brought me here in the first place. I can't begin to thank you because everybody in this link is so helpful. The web is an amazing thing and you all are a wealth of good information. Thank you all and I hope I can find some really nice stuff here.
  11. Thanks, I always appreciate whe people share free stuff they find on the web. Lots of traditional myths and tales from various nationalities translated into English for us. Of course when dealing with traditional stories like this, a lot of times they involve gender sterotyping such as helpless princesses that do nothing but are in constant need of rescuing or marrying. Especially with the lack of illustrated stories however, I think the best use of this source would be to read the story, make the protagonist a girl sometimes, modify it, and tell the story yourself.
  12. It's nice to know that there are still parts of Forida that are "way way out." Is that up in the panhandle? My sterotype of Florida living is neverending subdivisions pushed deep into reclaimed wetlands. Hopefully it takes a while before they get to you. ;)
  13. Your husband and your dd both had the right reaction. Wardrobe malfunctions are always funny when you hear about it (or think about it) after the event, but never during or in the middle of it.
  14. If it were a cold, he'd have more symptoms. It's probably just a bacterial infection that can easily be treated. I know people usually like to just tough it out when symptoms seem minor, especially if money is a problem. And usually things clear up by themselves when your immune system figres it out. This though seems a bit more serious. The bug doesn't seem to want to let up without some outside intervention. If youwait, you may be waiting fora long time. I think if you take him to a doctor, it'll be something minor. Your son will take medicine for 7-10 days, the symptoms will be gone in three or our days, and you won't need a refill. Probably/hopefully.
  15. Actually I'm not really joking, Jennifer. If the topic is "shoes", I would take that as an opportunity to do something really silly. Get a pair of really bizaar shoes or something that totally clashes and are completely inappropriate with the rest of your outfit.
  16. Having been through pregnancy with my dw before I realize just how scary and how many little things can go wrong. It gives a full appreciation and a miscarriage would have been so devastating, let alone two. I can understand how intimidating it must be, but we're all rooting for you. I gie you my best regards.
  17. It's a bit strange how conflicted I am about some things. As an American living in China with a Chinese wife and a daughter we have very different ideas. My MIL offended me when she said "oh, it's nice that the first one is a girl since she can help take care of the younger ones." And of course my wife fully agrees with her. I really don't want any sex/gender roles to come into play. I specifically chose stories with female protagonists (and male a good mix). I won't read anything about helpless kidnapped princesses who need to be saved by knights or princes. Who's only virtues are being submissive and beautiful. Meanwhile my wife watches Korean soap operas where the plot revolves around something trite like they ran out of the spice the father likes and hope he doesn't notice at dinner. More specifically regarding sex and imagery, it doesn't bother me so much and I hope my daughter has a healthy, safe, fulfilling relationships and doesn't love in vain, but if she does to come out of it stronger. Her mother though was a complete square when I was courting her and it was maddening and quite frustrating at times as I was dealing with her attitudes about postponing intimacy. In the end, although it was pointless and unnecessary, in honesty, I do respect her for that. My daughter is only 9 months old and we've not had to deal with this yet. I wouldn't think anything of seeing those magazines. I'd think of it as normal and not be offended. Probably. Almost certainly.
  18. Secular folks can be just as closed minded and rude too. I'm guilty of that. WAS gulity, rather. I had a horrible run in with a fundy church I joined when I was 18 and felt trapped in and was bitter about the experience and towards fundamentalist Chiristianity for many years afterwards. At that time I was pretty short, nasty, and resentful to Christians. So I was there myself at one point. It took me many years to come to peace with what happend and to let it go. Now, because I can understand the passions and resentments from both sides, there's a sort of wisdom I developed from the mental and spiritual pain I put myself through. If I hadn't put aside my predjudices towards Christians, I wouldn't have such wonderful Christian friends as I do. And if I hadn't made those friends, I wouldn't have considered homeschooling my own kids, I wouldn't be posting in this forum at all. And posting here is sanding me down and refining me even further. With my Christian friends, we don't talk about religion, we don't offend each other. But reading the posts here, and I do even if I don't contribute in them, it gives me a better understanding of the various colors and flavors of Christianity. So thanks.
  19. LOL at all the nicey nice, touchy feely women around here. You don't want to adopt it and you don't have an animal control center to take it away... Click Click (aim) BANG!
  20. As a man who's not religious, I must admit to enjoying the eyecandy. Sorry.
  21. Only 20%, not 40%. The superdelegates are governors, Congressmen, party elders and such. Only the Dems have them, not the GOP. They are unpledged and can switch sides if they choose. For over 50 years conventions have been a big celebration of party unity and gives the candidate much momentum coming out of it due to all the hype and free publicity. A brokered convention would become a big behind the scenes brawl of deal cutting, hard work and bad feelings. That would be trouble for the Dems since it would likely leave behind a lot of anger and ill will from supporters of the loser. It'd take a lot of wind out of their sails. One thing that's interesting about fringe candidates, as Ron Paul said when he suspended his campaign recently, a brokered convention gives them more power to influence events, policies, and cut deals to play kingmaker. Paul withdrew when Romney did because that was the point Paul realized that McCain would be able to control the conention himself. Had McCain or Romney come up short of a majority, they would have had to align with Paul or Huckabee to get the majority needed for the nomination.
  22. My wife is 5'2 95 lbs. That's normal in CHina. I told her when she went to the US, she would have to shop in the children's departement. She didn't like that too much and slugged me. Granted I was kidding around, the thing is though that I didn't know until I read this thread if I was actually telling the truth or not.
  23. The psych ward is a great job for lots of good stories. For personal safety and dealing with erratic, violent personalities, it's not much better than being Colleen's librarian.
