  1. I'm sure this has been asked before but searches didn't come up with much. Some of you probably have them in your subscriptions so links would be appreciated. But I would love to hear some of your favorite courses. Did you use them as a supplement or a credit class? I am looking at Classical Mythology and a Brief History of the World so far. And is Linwood Thompson good or bad to listen to? This would be for a 13-15 tr old boy if that matters. I'm leaning towards the audio when possible. Thanks!
  2. Good idea! I have a bunch of fun foam stuff that I was going to do that with.
  3. I do like to hold a book and we are not techno savvy here yet...no iphone or ipad. Just a plain old laptop :tongue_smilie: We're in the dark ages! lol
  4. OK, you all convinced me! If I didn't buy them I'd regret it someday and kick myself. Now to clear shelf space and get them here without DH knowing..... ;)
  5. OK, I looked again at the set. They are the Britannica Great Books set-50+ books in all. The title of the book is first on the spine and then it says "Britannica Great Books" smaller print at bottom of spine. They are all the same color-dark brown. Good to Very Good condition, a little dusty but not moldy or anything. Spines seem tight on the few I looked at. They look like this (minus the library tag) http://www.flickr.com/photos/dearwatsonmedia/3329532900/ I meant to look at the copyright date but forgot. I really want them but they take up so much space. And will we ever really read about Freud? There are quite a few that I just don't see ever reading...... Hmmm, will probably cave though ;)
  6. I go to Half Price books at least once a week, often twice. I don't think I've left without buying at least one book. I love their clearance section. They always have the classics and older books on clearance for .50! If I lived near a local used book store I'd be there 2x a week for sure!
  7. I know we will take 2-3 weeks off at Christmas time. Otherwise, we take time off as we need it. I don't have to count days or anything so I just figure it all evens out.
  8. I haven't used SL in high school but have been researching it a lot lately-and I mean A LOT. I think I've read almost every thread here and at the SL board. LOL Basically, what I learned is that every program will have good/bad reviews and pros/cons. Every program will work great for people and not so great for people, it all depends on the child/family. So I need to look at MY CHILD and decide if the program will meet his needs/learning style and not worry about what others say because they are commenting on the program and THEIR CHILD. But most importantly, SL has A LOT of successful high school graduates so it must be doing something right for those kids ;)
  9. Definitely yes! I found 2 board games I had been looking for for ages at hs sales.
  10. You're welcome! Hope you sell lots of stuff :001_smile: Last thing I forgot....if you have craft supplies like yarn, fabric, scrapbook paper, don't be afraid to sell those too. (If you have room) Homeschoolers often use those materials and love to buy them at sales like this. I'm taking 2 boxes of yarn this time. I figure it's better to try to sell here before taking them to Goodwill or something. I'll put these things under the table though to stay out of the way.
  11. This is a midwest family reunion staple I think! ewe
  12. Is it everywhere or just here where people say "folks" a lot? My husband refers to his parents as his "folks" and people often greet you "hey folks."
  13. Going to hs book sales is a hobby for me ;) I'm doing one this Friday as well. Here are some things I do. For pb books/readers, I don't mind having them in bins (covers facing front) that I can just quickly sort through. You can usually get 3 rows of books in a copy paper size box. Put this on the end of the table if you don't have a lot of space since people will take more time to look through these and you don't want them blocking the whole space. For other larger books if you can set those out on the table by category-science, history, etc. then they have more exposure. If you don't have that much table space, just put them in bins/boxes by subject and label the front prominently. It's OK to put some boxes on the floor or if you don't have enough table space, but the box w/ least amt on the floor. Or turn a storage bin upside down and use this as a side table that you can angle out from the corner of your space for a bit more room. Set any sets like a science kit or set with multiple books like Sonlight, etc out more prominently. If you can put a little table tent (paper folded in half and set up) with the title/price on these that is a good idea too. If you used it and liked it-make a quick note "really enjoyed this program with my 3rd grader" type thing on the table tent. It will often get a discussion going and you're more likely to sell things, even if it's not that item. ;) If you have a "free" box of books not in good shape or magazines, this will get people to come over. Put it on the floor to the edge of your space so the people don't get in the way of other shoppers. I found this to be a good way to draw people over! Lastly, if you happen to have some catalogs like Sonlight, MFW, etc it would be great to bring those. You could offer to let people look if they were wondering about a book and they would think you were so smart and prepared :) Which, of course, you are! Good luck!
  14. WOW-great job! This will be so helpful to tons of homeschoolers! What ages are your kids? Thanks for sharing!!
  15. :iagree: Where we used to live (WA) the schools had to let hsers participate in sports with no strings attached. I don't how this worked in reality though. In the state we are in now you have to be dual enrolled or part of the homeschool assistance program (run through the school district) to play sports. Check with your district to see what the rules are. Don't take "I think" answers either, ask to see it in writing.
  16. I'm just doing some research on lit curriculum for the next few years. I have a cheap copy of the BJU Lit-grade 7 student text coming. Just wondering if I need the teacher guide to really evaluate the program? If you you used this program did you need the teacher guide? Thanks PS. I'm also looking at Lightening Lit if you want to jump in with any comparisons ;)
  17. Finishing our 6th yr but it still feels like I'm treading water most of the time ;)
  18. Sounds like a good plan. That's similar to what we do now. He loves to read mysteries like Hardy Boys but I still assign books (mostly historical fiction and a few classics) and then he has to give me a narrative about the book. I also expect 2 book reports a month but he gets to choose which books-free choice or the assigned books.
