  1. What is MCT? I keep hearing about it, but can't place it.
  2. If you're insane and over planning, I'm completely nuts. I've already purchased everything I need for next year. It's the first year I'm not jumping ship in at least one subject, since everything is working so well for my family. We'll continue on with the next in the series for virtually all subjects. DS 7 will return to Saxon and DS 13 will switch from Hey Andrew to Athenaze.
  3. Less than $500 for all children. Textbooks and ebooks are my friend! I pick up the needed textbooks/ebooks for my oldest, and some workbooks for my 1st grader. Except for penmanship workbooks, I have everything I need for grades 3-8 now. :D
  4. Hogan's Heros! A delightful classic that our family enjoys. :001_smile:
  5. Yes, I've used it with mixed results. #1 got the idea quickly at 2 1/2, but reverted back to diapers. #2 was 17 months at the time and #3 was due so it was bad timing all around. #4 was potty trained in 2 hours at 3 1/2, and I'm still stunned it worked. I skipped the doll, added m&ms, but otherwise followed the instructions. I encouraged him to drink as much pop as he wanted, told him we were completely out of diapers and he was moving into underwear, and gave him a m&m the moment he did anything encouraging. It was somewhat similar to clicker training for dogs, lol. As each child is so very different, I make no guarantee that it will work. :D Best of luck!
  6. DS 13 tends to take 3 hours for school, excluding assigned reading. My focus is solidifying fundamentals before high school and learning study skills. Saxon 87 Oxford Latin 1 Hey Andrew Teach Me Greek 3 Rod and Staff 5 (we switched over this year and I wanted an easy transition.) Vocabulary for Life Pentime Penmanship grade7 History Odyssey level 2, Early Modern Apologia General Science Piano
  7. :iagree: I love HO for my 5th, 6th, and 7th graders, but it was more thanI wanted with my 1st grader. We're simply using SOTW w/ AG.
  8. This is fun! For the over 10 I would do: Math (30-45 min), R&S English (20-30 min), Latin (15 min), Spelling/Vocabulary & Penmanship (15 min) and require 1 chapter book to be read every week. Under 10: Math (15-20 min), Queen's Language Arts (5-10 min), and Pemanship (5-10 min). Also required to read 1 chapter book every week. :001_smile: We'd unschool everything else. My personal emphasis is on skills, not content, since skills tend to take a while (years) to build.
  9. :iagree: Cold turkey often works the best. Switch to underwear, teach the child to clean themselves, and let it go. My potty training holdouts were using the toilet within a week. ;)
  10. Basics, basics, basics. :001_smile: Have dd1 read, write in a journal, and do a bit of math everyday. One lady recommended doing workbooks at a grade lower when life is busy. Her kids could work independently while reviewing the previous year's work. Best of luck!
  11. I have both and use them. My children end up memorizing their chores, but I love being able to say choretime - grab your chore packs. It helps that my dh is also able to get chores going by announcing it's chore time - grab your chore packs. As for as MOTH, I've never been able to follow a schedule that well, but I've found that working through the scheduling is helpful in and of itself. It gives us a plan of action, even if poorly implemented. lol, one year I was convinced that I could have the house clean, school finished, the children bathed, the children having played one-on-one with each other by noon, along with their time on the computer. I worked with my schedule for days trying to make it work, but I no matter how much I tweaked my schedule I needed more time. It forced me to realize my expectations were too high and we needed more time to accomplish my list. :D
  12. But 4 days for 44 weeks is 176. ;) It's simply trading a shorter week for a longer school year.
  13. You could call her a 4th grader this year, a 4th/5th grader next year, and a 5th grader the following year? This way she doesn't get demoted, she simply doesn't progress as quickly.
  14. Yes...under the sofa, under the radiator, on the kitchen table :ack2:, I've even found them outside!?! :smilielol5:
  15. Having a little brother and hearing Mom and her friends speaking about boys, I was prepared for the grunting and boyisms and we have plenty of those, lol. :001_smile: What's surprised me about my sons is how SWEET they are. My dd picks flowers for herself. My sons pick flowers to give to me. When I'm ill, they give me hugs and clean the kitchen. They open doors and insist on carrying packages for me. I expected dd to be sweet (and she is), but I didn't expect it of my boys. :D
  16. I use my MOTH schedule to develop a routine. Through MOTH, I figure out if it's possible to get everything done, and develop a schedule. In practice, our schedule turns into our morning or afternoon routine. ;)
  17. When the stomach flu went through the house, I switched to a diet of saltines, grapes, and mild cheese. I was the only member who did not get really sick, although I was mildly nauseous. Even ended up losing 15 pounds when all was said and done. ;) I hope you find something that works.
  18. Formal Subjects Math Latin English: Grammar, writing, spelling & vocabulary, reading, penmanship History: Includes writing & literature, and some art appreciation Science Piano Informally Music appreciation, logic puzzles, computer technology, occupational studies, PE
  19. Personally, I think it's a great plan. :D There's no law that math must be first thing in the morning, although it's ideal because most people can focus better in the morning. What does your son think of doing math last? My older 3 often have firm ideas on what order they wish to complete their subjects, and I've faced rebellion in the rank if I try to enforce a specific order for schoolwork to be completed.
  20. :iagree: My thought is that by the time symptoms show, everyone's been exposed anyway. I prefer all the children to get sick at once. I make chicken soup, we curl up in the living room, and watch TV for a few days. When it's staggered, I'll have a child sick at any given time for a month. It's difficult when one child is sick, and the others are charged up and ready to take on the world.
  21. :iagree: My older 3 are using HO level 2. My 5th grader's in Ancients, 6th grader's in Medieval, and my 7th grader's using Early Modern. It's a wonderful fit. So wonderful that I looked at using HO instead of SOTW + AG with my 1st grader. That's a lot more history than I care to do with a 6yo!
  22. Instead of another academic course, could you create a study course? There are several good books on study skills, organization, keeping track of assignments, etc. your son could work through. A friend of mine's highschool required all freshmen to take a course on study skills. She mentioned it helped quite a bit making her way through a competitive high school.
