  1. Could you buy some safe chocolate, melt it and pour it into a mold of a snowman? Enjoy Life brand has safe chocolate chips and chocolate bars.
  2. Got it, thanks for the explanation. Ds1 doesn't really understand the counting up and down of the number lines that well (as taught in the CTC math workbook), so hopefully I won't run into this problem with him. He prefers the abacus or manipulatives.
  3. I felt ds1 around 12-13 weeks and ds2 a little earlier. Of course no one believed me:rolleyes:
  4. We're waiting. But I guess I'm just no cautious enough. I never run out to stock up on food. We make do with what we have, which at the moment isn't much! But the roads are never that bad after a day or two so I don't think we'll starve. We are supposed to drive up to Northern Va, this evening and come back Sunday, those plans may be cancelled though. We'll see.
  5. The sale is until the 21st :) We have the giant playmat and creature cards, they're great! Thinking about getting the flipbook now. http://www.charliesplayhouse.com/
  6. Abaya is the "cloak" or body covering. Hijab is a common reference to the head covering, but can also be used as just a general description of Islamic dressing.
  7. Ds1- nursed for about 12 1/2 months. Ds2- only nursed for about 2-3 weeks and even that was supplemented with formula.
  8. We do both the lessons and the worksheets, but really the lessons don't take long at all. It's more "fun" than work, especially the parts that have the kids get up and be active. The worksheets are great too and I can see how they would be very beneficial even without the lessons, ds1 loves all the coloring with them. (I don't want to thread hijack, but can you point me in the right direction or pm me on how the Singapore worksheets can cause bad habits? I was thinking about Singapore later on down the road. I guess I must of missed the thread on this topic. Thanks)
  9. Just ordered 4 more, thanks for introducing me to these wonderful resources. Dh just rolled his eyes when I first told him my pseudo-going-back-to-school plans, but was pretty impressed when the shipment came in and I rattled off all the courses and universities the professors lectured at. Then he finally admitted I got a bargain for all that education;)
  10. Ugh, I just bought suppose a wolf too. I got mine from Rainbow Resource, but I don't think it would be worth it to spend the money to return it or worth standing in the long line at the post office. I knew I should have checked in here first. Oh well, I'll still read and glean what I can from it.
  11. Could you tell me a little bit more about this series. I looked at the samples, but would like to know more from your description. It looked like there are lots of different materials that need to be used for the lessons, is this something that involves a lot of pre-planning? Does it involve a lot writing by the child? It seems to be more for a classroom, is it easily adaptable to a homeschooling setting? Do I have to start with the first workbook, do they build upon each other? I ask, because we are learning a lot about dinosaurs now and would probably be more interested in the second book. It does look really interesting and I'd love to hear anything you don't mind sharing about it!:D
  12. I went to school with a girl named Crystal Glass. She had been my friend for a couple of years and my not so bright self never even made the connection until I overheard a couple of teachers talking about her name. Another girl I went to school with was named Tequila! Again I was little so I had know idea what tequila was and didn't know it was a big deal until our bus driver started going on and on about why on earth would parents name their child that and I had to ask my parents what the big deal was. Is your aunt in TN? My sister told me the same thing about a baby being named Chlamydia when she was a nurse. Said the patient asked how to spell it to put on the birth cert, since she thought is sounded pretty.
  13. We've been drinking it for 3 years. I really only have it in cereal and tea. I make kefir out of it for ds2. I wouldn't say we've had any dramatic differences in our lives since on it. It's just IMO better from the standpoint of it's less processed, we know the farm where it comes from, we know the cows are healthy and well taken care of, and we're supporting a local farmer.
  14. Another vote for the Lyra Ferbys. Great for little hands and the colors are nice and rich.
  15. $12/hr is the going rate around where I am in Va too, for the occasional sitter, but it's usually less for a regular sitter that comes in for set hours every week.
  16. I've gotten some Playmobil sets from Tuesday Morning.
  17. Great, I have just one more question:D Should the lesson in the ETC workbook alway match up with what we are doing in our phonic lesson. Since ds1 is starting on long vowels, should I wait until the other books are done first?
  18. Thanks, I went ahead and ordered 2, 3, and 4. About how long does it take usually to go through each book?
  19. I'm thinking about trying Explode the Code with ds1 as a supplement to his phonics lessons. He loves workbooks, but is just starting to get better at handwriting. He reads all double and triple consonant blends, ending and beginning and is learning how to read long vowel words. Should we still start with book one or skip over to 2 or 3? Also, I've seen similar books at B & N, but can't remember what the name of it was now. If you know which ones I'm talking about, how do you think they compare? I've never seen the ETC books IRL, so it's hard for me to gauge the difference. Thanks!
