This has been THE turn-around program for us. My dd still doesn't love math, but she does understand and occasionally enjoy her lessons and she no longer dreads math. My mom is hs'ing my neice and they are having math troubles. I have recommended MM several times, but the proof for Mom was when my dd offered to do a lesson to show her how the program works. Can you imagine? My kid offering to do an extra math lesson?! Life is good.

The first Christmas after my dh and I were married he gave me a stocking filled with kitchen utensils. Wooden spoons, whisks, etc. I might be ok with that now, but not then!

Oh my goodness, I got my very first Rainbow catalog today.:w00t::drool:

So, I overheard a conversation about this yesterday at the hardware store. The lady said that the wasps leave pheremones and that is the reason they keep returning to the same places. She was looking for a solution to remove the pheremones but I don't know if she had any luck.

S/O Pronunciation Thread Kiehl's?
KJsMom replied to KJsMom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Oh good! That's how I say it. :D -
So, I love Kiehl's products but I'm totally Texan. I've never been to New York and my only exposure to the company is on their site. I wear Kiehl's Original Musk and people always ask me what it is. I feel kind of silly telling them b/c I'm not sure I'm saying it right. How do you say it?

Suddenly Greasy Hair
KJsMom replied to MamaBearTeacher's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had a similar problem. I found that the conditioner I was using was too heavy for daily use. I had to use a clarifying shampoo for a couple of days to remove the residue, but that solved the problem. -
I read that they build nests around houses because it is convenient to water sources and protected spaces. I hate them too. They nest in our chimney.

MM uses drawings instead of manipulatives for most things, but you can always use manipulatives too. We use pennies, craft sticks, blocks, etc. You aren't required to use a certain thing, just whatever works for you.

modesty in front of other women? what is the point?
KJsMom replied to ktgrok's topic in General Education Discussion Board
 I am modest about changing in front of other women, but not for that reason. :D I think our culture is all about comparison. Who has bigger booKs and bottoms. Ooh, look at those sags and wrinkles! I don't want to be *weighed* and found lacking. -
:iagree: Our church, as well as just about all the others, has occasional problems with seriously immodestly dressed young girls. To my knowledge, no one ever confronts these girls. Our view is that if the girls are sitting in our church hearing the word of God, the Holy Spirit and our loving attitudes will lead the girls to dress more modestly. When I was a young teen I was one of those girls. I remember exactly how it felt to be told I couldn't wear my short skirts to church. I didn't return to church until after my oldest dd was born. It isn't easy to sit in church with my girls when their are so many booKs on display, but I try to remember how it felt to be those girls. They are just looking for love and acceptance. And I think I turned out ok. :D

Math N' Tears (not a new curriculum)
KJsMom replied to scubamama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My oldest was exactly the same. We both hated math because it took forever with lots of tears and drama. I switched curriculum in desperation and it turns out that was our problem. She wasn't fully understanding the work and retaining the information so it was always *new* even if we were reviewing. She still wants to dawdle over math if she can get away with it, but she can do the work with no tears now. -
WHERE are all the books?
KJsMom replied to starwarsmomma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
If you are crazy than so am I. My family gives books as gifts. My dd asked for books for her birthday. -
This is the book we will be using. I want my girls to have accurate, age appropriate information when they want to know, but I don't think they need to know everything, kwim? It might depend on your ds's personality. My mom gave me the full "where do babies come from" speech with pictures (not photos) when I was about 7. I was horrified! It was entirely too much information for me at that time, but my younger sister tagged along on the presentation and was fine with it. My oldest is very much like me and my youngest is more like my sister. I'm dreading this discussion, but planning for it now.

I'm in the middle of planning our year and we will be using ECC. As the pp mentioned, there are recipes included in A Trip Around the World and Another Trip Around the World and maybe a couple of other places in the lessons. If we choose to try additional recipes I will just google them. I think we will enjoy using The Complete Book of Animals. I found it at Sam's Club for $6.88. I also purchased Children Just Like Me and How to Bake an Apple Pie and See the World. Both are recommended reading and used multiple times. I am using this primarily with my rising 4th grader, but my K'er will tag along. Can't wait! There is a forum on the MFW site where you can find lots of information as well as yahoo groups. One is specifically for buying and selling items used for MFW. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MFW-ECC/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MFWFamilies/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mfwcurriculumswap/ http://board.mfwbooks.com/

No naps in Kindergarten....
KJsMom replied to fairfarmhand's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My oldest dd went to PS for K and 1st. No naps and a full day. They were in school from 8-3:20. That was a hard year. -
:bigear: I don't have any suggestions, but I would be interested to hear what anyone else has to say. We are in the same situation and I have wondered this myself.

Does she have flat feet? My dd had a similar problem and doctors told us over and over that it was just growing pains. I took her to a podiatrist and he fit her for orthotic insoles. It turns out that when she is sitting she has beautiful arches, but when she stands or walks her ankle rolls in a little and her arches flatten. The extra rotation in her ankle put lots of strain on her little legs and caused severe growing pain like symptoms.

Quick question about donating blood
KJsMom replied to Nakia's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I wasn't alllowed to give blood after getting a tattoo, but that was 12 years ago so things may have changed. They told us then that it had to be 1 year after.
