  1. This is certainly the way I learned it. There are entire Worldview Training Courses and camps and organizations among the Evangelical system I was a part of. I never knew it was a broader term. By the time I learned it, it was basically co-opted entirely to mean "Christianity is the Truth, the One Worldview, everything else is a confused worldview". I've been amazed to learn its broader, and original meaning. For the most part, I can't disassociate it with Christian Evangelism. Whenever I hear it, I assume I'm speaking with a Christian. I've yet to be wrong.
  2. Well, I feel sort of silly posting this, but I'd like some suggestions. I've always been mostly a teetotaler, not because I think alcohol is bad, so much as I hate the taste of it. My husband, however, typically has a glass of wine at dinner several times a week, but he has to drink alone because it all makes me gag. Even after several years living in Europe, where I finally built up a tolerance. Now, it's gone because I didn't have any interest in maintaining it. Frankly, I'm so exhausted and stressed out these days, I'd just love a little relaxer in the evenings. I've been thinking about trying wine coolers, or something. The last thing I even came close to liking was cherry cordial, years ago. I guess I just want something that's really flavorful--like cough syrup, so I don't have to taste the alcohol. What do you suggest? Anyone have anything that might help me with a little evening unwind? (I do yoga and meditate, so that's already there. I'm looking specifically for a tippling suggestion :)) Thanks!
  3. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I hope they will get this figured out quickly! :grouphug:
  4. Hubby and I bought our first new furniture EVER, in 15 years of marriage. 2 weeks ago. Today, 4-year-old put cuts in chair. I've put him away so I don't eat him. Now, I'm trying, calmly, to figure out what to do. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with at-home upholstery repair kits? Does anyone want a really sweet, but completely incorrigible, 4-year-old? I.
  5. My children aren't entitled to it, and we can't afford it. We'll help how we can, but they'll have to get through the way their father and I did. Scholarships and loans. I managed to get through with no debt, (work study, work, and scholarships) and hubby did it through working and with only $1,000 in loans which his parents paid off as a gift. Part of it depends on where you go. Also, when I taught in a university, I found that students who had to work for their education tended to give it more effort. so, I don't feel too badly.
  6. I believe this is the original study. http://www.cardus.ca/research/education/
  7. These are ones I re-read every several years. The Once and Future King Lonesome Dove To Kill a Mockingbird I, Claudius The Prince of Tides The Moon is a Harsh Mistress Some more, of course, but these are my favorite re-reads!
  8. I can so relate! I didn't remember pants being so comfortable. I love them!
  9. I had something like this happen just recently. My oldest, who has recently started public school didn't follow through on an obligation, and is now missing out on a great opportunity. The teacher said there had been another girl the year before, a former-homeschooler, who, in a similar situation threw a big fit with her mother and got her way. I think this will help my daughter learn. In the same way, I was once (as an adult) doing some FREE babysitting a 10-year-old who was being exceedingly rude and disobedient. When she grabbed her little brother and gave him an "arm burn" I jumped up and raised my voice at her. The mother made me apologize. The girl had to apologize for disobeying me, but I had to apologize too. Bull. I never baby sat for them again. I do want my children to understand there are buttons to be pushed on people, and you must learn that not everyone has the same buttons as your family members. And there are responsibilities for your actions.
  10. BJU had a rule against interracial dating at their university until 2000. You can Google it if you'd like. The school's issues with racism are well known. I'm not surprised that they would choose to present the enslavement and transportation of black people as just another form of immigration.
  11. My Asian side of the family insists on rinsing rice. And that's how I grew up doing it. I haven't stopped yet. Old habits, you know :) I don't know why we do it. Just do.
  12. Oooh! I've been thinking about this for a while--I'm looking forward to reading other folks' responses. Except, for me, I'd feel weird about making a to-do for myself. Maybe my family could go out for a meal, just us and the children, wear fancy clothes and say some words to one another and exchange a gift. I dunnoh. I think the only reason I'd want one is to have a strictly non-religious ceremony-thing. Our wedding was very religious, and my husband and I are non-believers now. Nevertheless, we made our commitments to one another and, religious or not, we continue to remake them everyday. So. . . I do think about it, and I'm going off to read others' ideas!
  13. OOh! We used to do these at Christmas! :)
  14. Thanks, everyone. I have the hard to spell one on my Wish List at Amazon, and I'm looking at MEP (or whatever) online, and then I'll keep my eyes out for the Beast thing :)
  15. Thanks, all! I just found this thread again, and am glad to see the great ideas. I'm going to use one this weekend--as soon as I figure out which!
  16. Ahh, I might do that. I have an exterior drive that's been wonkey. Maybe I should just buy a new one, just in case. Thanks!
  17. I can do all of that! I have Avast. I'll go ahead and go after the programs first. Then, I'll rumage through the start-up folder. Thanks!
  18. My laptop is apparently turning into a fossil, but I don't know how to fix it. It's not terribly old. I have a bunch of icons in my toolbar, which apparently means these programs start when I boot up (it takes about 7 minutes for my computer to boot fully, and if I try to turn in the internet before it's fully happy with me, it Blue Screens me and flips off. It's done this 4 times in the last 4 days. Should I just save what I can and wipe everything else off? I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions? Any place you suggest for teaching me how to actually wipe my computer clean? Thanks!
  19. My youngest is really math-oriented. She knows all of her times tables through 12. Grasps concepts very quickly. The other day, she surprised her 3rd grade brother by working in negative numbers more readily than he did. She goes to public school, but is in the advanced math section. What can I supplement her with at home? I've done ABeka in the past, and Singapore, but she needs more. What can anyone suggest? Thanks!
  20. Can you show me some examples (there's a wide internet out there!) of an atheist saying that expressions of religion should not be allowed in public, just because it offends them? I know of many cases where atheists are trying to remove specific religious statements/monuments because they are thought to be example of the state supporting religion, but I have yet to hear of one that people are trying to legislate religion away from everywhere simply because they're "offended". If people want something legal out of their sight, they should do their best to turn away, not demand people stay out of "their" public. That poor woman can lock herself away for ever, and her poor children too. But that's her choice. She can't take the choice of the gays away to leave their house and express love with the partner of their choosing.
  21. Not to hijack completely, but. . . this thread made me think about the sex education dolls story that I had read on Salon. They're from all over the world to teach littles about basic anatomy, sex, and even *horror* childbirth. http://www.salon.com/life/feature/2011/09/07/sex_ed This link takes you to the story, but you can see pictures of the soft and fuzzy dolls in the slide show. Anyway, I couldn't help thinking of these.
  22. I do always wonder about "what are we going to tell the children?" In one of the comments, someone was asking--"How am I supposed to explain sodomy to my children." I thought. . .WHHHATT? Really, when little children look at a married couple holding hands at the park, the little children are thinking---oooh, look at those people who have sex! Or, if they see a pregnant woman, are their little children thinking "Ooooh! They had sex!" I can't understand why we're so wound up about this. Little kids aren't thinking about sex, they see two people who live together and are Mommy and Daddy. Children who see gay couples aren't busily thinking, "How do they have sex, Mommy? What goes where?" My goodness. I wonder about adults who force all of these sexual notions on children. We had a good friend of mine from high school and his partner visit several months ago and spend a couple of nights. Do you know my young children never once asked me if they have sex! I don't really expect my children understand the prevalence of sex, or if that even crossed their minds that my two gay male friends _have_ sex! (They seem shocked to think their father and I have sex!) Just weird to me. People like this are afraid. Just so afraid.
