  1. My World Literature professor in college said that he really liked Madame Bovary on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday he really disliked it. Sundays he didn't feel strongly either way. :D So I am not surprised at a split on it. I didn't feel strongly either way, but I was able to read the book (in translation).
  2. :iagree: But I'd check with your department chair first to see what your school's policy is. If you don't have support, you may need to have the student read it to you. At most, I'd give one warning and then refuse to read the next time.
  3. I never liked the record store Wherehouse in CA because of this. When I was a child we never got a picture of it, but the sign lost a few letters so spelled (for months): Country Fried ick  I do wish I had a picture. Seriously... MONTHS!!! (if not years)
  4. :iagree: Really may be worth it. In college (early 90s) my husband rode Greyhound regularly to come visit. Door to door would be a 4 hour drive. Depending on Greyhound schedule, a very direct trip might be 5 hours but one with many stops could be up to 10. One stop was in front of the prison. I read my husband the OP question... He just laughed. Now... this was in CA and almost 2 decades ago. OTOH, I've seen how plane travel has deteriorated. I can't imagine Greyhound has improved. Hope you find a good solution.
  5. Yup. The idea is to write the problem in terms of a "unit". In 4B, my son is solving what are systems of equations applications using just a bar model. He's going to have some serious word problem solving skills! I let him do a number of problems without the bars, bu I also force him to use the bars on some so he continues to get practice with them.
  6. My folks have been giving through Heifer for a while. When my son was about two, my mom gave a goat for him and gave him the book Beatrice's Goat which shows how these gifts can make a difference.
  7. :grouphug: If you have an ereader, could you find some free (or real cheap) books for it? Maybe a temporary fix? Or new notebooks? Sometimes that's enough for a while.... And we're approaching the halfway point for Feb... :)
  8. I don't have it... but I thought it was a bag of something like Crisco and they could put their hand in a bag inside the bag of Crisco (so you don't get gloopy hands) and the fat is to show the insulation the polar animals have. Contrast with hand just in bag in water.
  9. You could always turn the volume off & that'd have the same result.
  10. Yeah... but cleaning yourself with your tongue... blech. (When I was under 10, my mom told me that a cat licking you was like a kiss, so I was trying to kiss my cat in "her language". Fur is soft... but blech overall.) Now being a cat during Egyptian times... not too bad... :)
  11. Yeah... I did a really good job with the prehistory book. Then I got busy and tired and he just read the Near East book with almost no outside reading and no discussion. Egypt has been a number of outside books and some discussion, but very little added to the timeline and very little writing. We should be finishing Egypt and starting Asia... for which I've done no prep so it may be toss and read again. I try to console myself with the knowledge that this is more than I got... but it's still not the ideal. Unfortunately, it's about all I can do right now. He's getting solid instruction with math and English, so history is okay if it's more a lick and a promise for now. (grump) If you find a way to put more hours in the day, I can probably do a better job with it :)
  12. THANK YOU!!!!!! I didn't know you could do this and was able to email the BFSU pdf which was showing up too small to read and convert it to kindle format. YEA!!! (happy dance!)
  13. Also the # for a space and ^ for insert. I've been able to get part-time jobs as a proofreader, so I do view knowing the symbols and being able to use them as useful. It opened a couple of doors for me.
  14. I use the teaching guides to get additional book lists and some websites. I don't find the student guides to be useful. The TG divides each book into sections on a theme. I am having my son read the section, note any dates he wants to add to the timeline (lately he doesn't find any dates or any interesting notes :glare:) and I have him read additional books I get from the library. I haven't been doing as good a job as I'd like lately... we're finishing up Egypt and I've basically been tossing library books and the text at him, saying "READ", and then not discussing it with him. Oh well... at least he's enjoying Egypt for now...
  15. Be sure to have a mechanic inspect the car before you buy. Definitely worth the money. Also check Consumer Reports and avoid any cars on their do not buy list. We've had luck from private sellers and I don't think I'd buy a used car from a dealer. Good luck!
  16. I've at least encountered the other ideas before... but what do you mean by this? Is it how things may change with people living due to medicine who otherwise would have died? (Like without surgery as an infant, my husband wouldn't be here.) Or is it something else?
  17. I'd keep going. I think the reviews lend themselves to continue with the spelling concepts rather than stay tied to a book.
  18. I think the most common error is when people average the times and say 5 hours. The trick to avoiding this mistake is to realize that if Sally heads out and goes shopping, the job will be done in 4 hours by Bob, so if they're working together (and not getting in each other's way) the job will be done in LESS time than it would take the fastest one alone. (It's not like when a child helps you with a household chore.)
  19. And I remember watching that Happy Days episode. It was rough with the cliffhanger!!
  20. Yup. They are 8 allergen free. My son has a dairy allergy and we used these in our pancakes today. Another thing to consider is margarine though... you've got to be careful with dairy in it. :glare: I would check with the friend's parents. Our son's allergy is severe enough that I wouldn't trust anything anyone else made. When we're at my folks, we have to bring unopened containers to be sure there aren't any cross-contamination issues. An intolerance would be much easier. (And we're an extreme case.) But Enjoy Life is safe. We also use Earth Balance for margarine. You can find it in cubes at some stores. It works well for cooking too.
  21. I'd say last season jumped the shark. We're still watching though :001_smile: I definitely don't miss the character of Cuddy. I do like having new doctors.
  22. I don't know where you're located, so this may not apply at all. Our cc has 2 main campuses and some smaller satellite locations. Calc I is offered at the two main campuses only. There's only one night class at one location. Calc II is offered at the two main campuses but the night course is only offered at one campus. Did you check to see if there's another campus where your son could take it? You could also call the math department and see when and where it would be offered next. We do a brisk business in the summer with students taking calc at the cc rather than at the uni. Good luck!
  23. I just wanted to say thank you so much for your posts here. I really appreciate the time you're taking to explain things. (And now back to lurking ;) )
  24. I use Getty Dubay. The neat thing about it is that the print turns to the cursive. I don't know how it'd work for a leftie... but they do have directions in the books about it. (Swamped right now so have to post & run... but the link should give you more info...) Good luck! :)
