  1. Allysonsviolinstudio on youtube has a lot of good videos for learning on your own. It is not intended to replace an instructor, but it does help with learning the basics. I recall she talks about bow hold and posture too.
  2. We feed our old cat raw food because it is the only food that appears to nourish him. We tried all types of canned, dry, and frozen, but raw is the only one that works for him. He has gained weight on it which was needed. We are using Rad cat http://www.radfood.com and Instinct Raw www.instinctpetfood.com/cats. It is more expensive, but for us it is saving him from withering away. If you buy Instinct Raw from Petco or Petsmart, make sure it wasn't allowed to thaw and be refrozen. It should have separate nuggets and not be in a block. I have had trouble with it being spoiled. Other than having a hard time finding a good bag of it, we are happy with raw food for our cat.
  3. Little Red Cup has very good loose leaf tea and excellent prices. https://littleredcuptea.com/collections/organic-tea You can purchase several samples to try it.
  4. I really prefer not to be on Facebook. It is just one more thing you have to check every morning. But so many groups and organizations use it as their main mean of communication, so I have an account that's only purpose is to send me an email when one of those groups posts some info. I set up my notifications to email me for those groups only. Each morning when I check my email, I also get any notices of Facebook postings. It allows me to stay updated without using Facebook. This could be a solution with the 4H group.
  5. I second Fan Math with CLE especially if they have not been exposed to Singapore word problems.
  6. As someone who had the opportunity to complete my education through grad school and have a good career prior to getting married and having a child, I feel fortunate. For me it was a wonderful thing and I tell my daughter that. However everyone has different goals in life. There is nothing wrong with having children early if that is her desire. Everything is a choice. I feel it is important to consider all options. I have been open with her that it would be hard to grow your career and raise a child. Being mobile is a must in many companies and having a trailing husband and children makes those choices so much more difficult. I think the world needs many kinds of women those who want to be mothers first and those who show we can be in the c suite. It is a disservice to your daughter for anyone to tell her either is not a good choice. As you said, his views felt outdated. Personally, I would say that.
  7. We were in a similar situation while in Singapore 5A. I bought CLE level 5. It did help with retaining because it is a constant spiraling review with each lesson. However, I struggled with how little it provided in instruction compared to Singapore. It introduced a topic and then dropped it. There was a little practice but not much for the new topic. We went back to using Singapore as our daily lesson, completing the short workbook exercise during the lesson, and assigning a CLE We Remember section for practice each day. It is working well and has improved her retention. I don't want to knock CLE because I know a lot of people like it, but for us it lacked the depth I felt was needed for the daily teaching. It has been wonderful as daily practice. I do cross out some of the problems each day so it isn't too much. It isn't too expensive and saves me the time of creating a spiraling review sheet each day.
  8. I am a huge fan of BA. We used it in addition to Singapore math, but didn't try to schedule topics together. We are just going through the books for a set amount of time each day. We started with level 3 while in Singapore 4 and are now in 4D. We've completed Singapore 5B and still find a lot of value in BA. BA has the full solutions in the back of the book. They are very helpful especially if you are concerned about teaching it. We also use CWP, but only one problem per day on a white board. For me, trying to coordinate them would be too much. I just appreciate each one for what it teaches and plan them into our daily schedule.
  9. I cooked the onions overnight with olive oil and butter and they were wonderful. The house smelled of carmelized onions in the morning, but it was a great way to make them without all the watching and stirring. It is definitely a timesaver.
  10. We experienced a similar situation with our front door. A rock shattered the outside glass. Ours had a leaded glass panel between the interior/exterior panels so we only lost the outside. But, it was outrageously expensive to replace the glass from the original manufacturer. We took our measurements to Home Depot and they were able to order a new panel (all 3 pieces) for 1/3 the cost of the original quote we received. I would recommend checking your local home improvement store. We were able to install it ourselves too.
  11. I have donated and have volunteered in them. I feel that they are necessary. I have seen positive changes over the last couple of years. They are getting and distributing more fresh food. I have sorted tomatoes and organges to make sure only safe, presentably food was being distributed. I personally would have eaten some of the food we had to pitch but those were the rules to ensure safety and quality. At one place, we get a list detailing the items that are needed so they are not just receiving random things. They are a good safety net that will probably always be needed. Fortunately I have never had the need, but I am glad it is a service that is available.
  12. Here are two ways to solve it. http://www.onsponge.com/forum/35-thinkingmath/9340-challenging-p5-problem-sums-urgent-help-needed https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070412065213AAxbYzP Sometimes it just takes a different view to understand it.
  13. We went with the Kindle Fire because you couldn't beat the price. I can tell that it is not as slick as my $200 tablet, but it still has all the functionality needed. My child is able to use it for games, audio books, and surfing the web. She is very happy with it. It is also nice not to have to share mine anymore.
  14. My child has a June birthday. We enrolled her in kindergarten at age 5. She was the youngest kid in her class and the majority of her classmates were 6 to 11 months older than her. What I learned in our area is that most kids don't start kindergarten at age 5 if they have a summer birthday or even if they have a late spring birthday. Looking back, I wish I had waited and put her in a 4 day a week kindergarten or even another year of preschool before starting the full kindergarten. She did okay, but I am seeing the difference now that the kids are older. My concerns are now the academic competition that will happen in high school. This is a very controversial subject for many since they feel that the age of kindergarten is being changed to 6 since everyone is redshirting for various reasons. Here it is for sports but other places it is for academics. My advice would be to find out what are the ages of the kids in the new school system. You may find that almost all of them are 6 in K and will be 7 in 1st. If so, it would be the right thing to do for your child to put him in K. If you feel that your child is advanced for his age, then he would probably thrive starting in 1st even being a little younger than the rest of the kids. You know your child best. I feel that the elementary years are the foundation for everything that comes later so giving a child the best start is important in my opinion. We homeschool now so I have the ability to hold her back a year if I feel she isn't ready to start high school, but if your child stays in a traditional school, you may not have that option without worrying about the social stigma of repeating a grade. One last thing I want to mention, when my child was in K, I had to spend about two hours each night working with her to complete her homework as well as help her understand things she didn't get in class because they did move fast. It was the same in first grade. I felt like she had to be in school from 7:45am to 3pm and then another two hours with me. She wasn't a fast writer so she didn't get recess at school often because the teacher had them finish what wasn't done during recess. The reason I am telling this is because I felt like she didn't have any time for play after all the school work. I wish age 5 and 6 had not been so heavy with school. Every school is different. As others have said, talk with the new school, they should be able to help with your decision a lot.
