Northwestern PA and team policy debate.
FourOaks replied to Mynyel's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Check out www.homeschoolworks4u.com on April 15th or after for the new schedule of classes. There will be a speech class and a debate class offered in which students are STRONGLY encouraged to compete in either NCFCA or Stoa tournaments, but they get the coaching online -- which may be just what you need if there are no clubs around your new location. If there is a Stoa tournament anywhere within driving distance, your kiddos can compete. -

It is one of my dd's (16) favorite books. I really liked it as well and plan to read it again this summer if possible. My dd did a study of AK with Martin Cothran during the summer a couple years ago and absolutely loved it and the book!

I have done searches for everything and am struggling to have them turn up exactly what I am looking for, so if anyone can assist, I sure would appreciate it.' I am really struggling with what I want to do with my twin DDs regarding US/American History and American Lit. I am looking into U.S. History with Scholars Online, TPS U.S. History for High School or TPS Classical Track 1 American Lit, History, Comp. However, I have no intentions for them to continue with the TPS Classical Track, so I am wondering if they are even allowed to try to join just for that one class for that one year. I've decided not to go the Omnibus III route as I did with my older DD. I am looking for a very strong course that is fairly heavy on writing, and includes a discussion-based component. I feel like I've left no stone unturned, but just cannot figure out what to do. Do any of you have any information regarding the above courses, or other similar courses that you might recommend? THANKS!

Did anyone have a student go through SP Omnibus III Primary this year? Was it even available? It shows that it is available now, but I can't get any information on it. Are these worth the price? My older DD did Omnibus III Primary live a almost 2 years ago, but I am looking at the SP option for my other two. Not sure if it's really worth the price. Thanks for any information any of you might have.

Does anyone know anything about SolidWorks?
FourOaks replied to FourOaks's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
No, not cheap. The site has it for $150 for a 12 month license for the student edition. I was just wondering if anyone had a student use it for 12 months and how much they actually were able to learn. Looking for any information I can find. Is this a program that is becoming popular? If one is interested in architecture, would it be a good choice? -

Do you have neighbors or other friends in various fields? My neighbors are helping out with this for us. In fact, we just got an email from one of them this morning with the itinerary she has set up for the day for my daughter. It is FABULOUS and I am hoping will be a great experience for my dd. We are hoping the neighbors on our other side may be able to do something similar for her as they are in other fields. We are also going to try and contact some friends of friends who may be willing to allow a day of shadowing in their industry. Other than personal contacts, I have no idea how to go about getting job shadows set up. I'm all ears!

Speech/communication
FourOaks replied to Scrapbook queen's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I do agree with Candid that there is nothing like the experience of speech and debate. I am a speech coach for a club. However, there are also those who need just a speech class, so I do recommend both of those resources. I taught a class in which I used both resources together. The class ran for a year but only met once a week for an hour-ish. Both are great and are true to each of their styles. Meaning that Boot Camp is very IEW-ish with Pudewa being his engaging, funny, enjoyable self while teaching speech. Dr. Jeff Meyers is just as engaging as he is in real life as well. If you want the students to have a workbook, then use Great Communicators. Also, it's worth it to note that the other truly was a boot camp, where kids were going through the program, writing and then presenting speeches sometimes overnight or with extremely little prep time, so the example speeches definitely are not examples of any type of polished speech or speaker. I gave my dd a 1/2 credit as that is what is typically issued in high school for a speech course. I'd have to go back and look to see how many speeches they actually gave because I can't remember off the top of my head. I would suggest that including an informative, a persuasive, an impromptu, and a process speech should be required. Beyond those, you can pick and choose what you and your students prefer. I can answer more specific questions when I have more time if you'd like. -

I've used both Secrets of Great Communicators and Speech Boot Camp, so I can answer any questions you have.
