  1. I'm just so excited and wanted to share. I just received a microbiology text for my daughter - I ordered it from amazon - used - for $5.55!! That included shipping!!! This has been the first semester that we have searched for books other than the community college bookstore. We've done pretty well with amazon, but this was by far our best deal. Where do you find great prices for college textbooks?
  2. Thank you ssoooo much for sharing that site. Love it.
  3. If TT is working, I'd just buy the student book and the tests/answer guides. In other words, just not the CDs. The lessons are the same as the computer lectures. Your child could just work in the book. For me, that would be easier than switching to an entirely different curriculum so close to high school. Unless, of course, you're planning a switch before high school, then why not now. ETA And don't let the level numbers of MM fool you. My youngest is doing TT6. My older is doing MM5 and it's extremely MORE than what the younger is doing.
  4. But what exactly are funeral potatoes? And could you share a recipe please?? I have severe commitment issues and cannot start through that whole thing, so I picked one page. Obviously this is a good dish and I need good dishes. ;). Thanks so much!
  5. I just wanted to bump this article. Very timely for me. One in college, one senior in high school. I have my own student loans (had them longer than I've had my two youngest) and the girls and I have had lots of conversations about paying for college. This was a good article.
  6. Just thought I'd bump this for ya since it's been a couple of days. Hoping you can get some help.
  7. Well, I guess that helps. I misunderstood the whole concept. I wouldn't have bought all this if I knew that blue didn't supplement light blue. Oh well. Thanks y'all
  8. We're currently working through 5A (I think) and my son is struggling a bit with dividing decimals. So I put in my MM disk with the whole curriculum on it, go to the blue series, find decimals 2, find dividing with decimals (assuming that he can have extra practice on this), but they are the exact same problems/pages as in the light blue series. Is this a fluke? I thought the blue series was EXTRA, not the same. Now then, I haven't needed the blue series for anything else, so this is my only experience with it. Anyone else have this experience? Thanks - Anne
  9. I consider myself broke even though I can pay all my bills and have extra every month. But I owe more than I own. I have a negative net worth - how is that not considered broke?
  10. Oh - this. I think Mammoth Math books to help with fractions, since you mentioned that he struggled a bit. The Dark Blue Series has books specifically for certain topics and they're really inexpensive. And SSOOOOO effective!
  11. I have no experience with HOD or MOH, but we're using MFW RtR now. It starts with a VERY thorough study of the Roman period. The main spine during this time is Foster's Augustus Caesar's World, which starts with Rome's brief founding history, then heavily toward the end of Julius Caesar's life. I have no idea if that helps any, but I know at least that much.
  12. I think I'll bump this daily until everyone here reads it. Incredibly clear explanation of the foreclosure crisis.
  13. I'm sorry - you're right. I misphrased that. HE works through practice problems. Maybe the lectures might help.
  14. You might want to check out www.khanacademy.com It is free and has lectures and practice problems on thousands of math/science topics. Just browse through it and you'll see what I mean.
  15. I can see her with those minor - she also loves writing. Thanks. See - a whole new direction! Thanks. Lots of ideas. Thank you for writing them all out. I'll look into that book. Thanks. I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I'm going to get her to look this over tonight after dinner. I'd love to see her pursue her passion. With minimal debt. But with a somewhat secure future. (?) Anne - who is an RN, but would love to be something else but has too much student loan debt to change directions.
  16. My oldest dd said to me a couple of years ago, "Mom, did you know that they make dark milky ways?" She was really excited - she thought they were great!! I had to admit that yes, they've been around for years, and I that I ate them all, every year.
  17. My second daughter is a senior, public schooled the whole way, smart and active in school, will graduate high school with 30 college hours. She's becoming more and more stressed about the fact that she doesn't know what she wants to do/be when she grows up. Her most passionate love is European history, which she has completely taught herself. But she doesn't see how a history degree is practical unless you're planning on teaching, which she isn't. She has slight interests in photography also, as well as fashion design/merchandising. I'd like to encourage her to get her second year of basics, then to take a semester of interest-led classes. Maybe something will grab her. Do you feel that's a good suggestion? Any other ideas or encouragement? Any other direction with history that I'm not seeing? Thanks.
  18. My oldest ds is finishing up Mammoth Math this school year and I'm looking ahead to next year. I really think he'd prefer Saxon, though we've never used it before. The "puzzle-ness" of MM really makes him crazy, though he keeps going because I ask him to. He would prefer straight forward facts. Amount of work doesn't bother him. Since he'll be in 8th grade, I just feel that I need to make a decision for the long haul and stick with it. I'm thinking Saxon 8/7 would be a good place to start. I know that there are families for whom Saxon didn't work, but does he sound like it would? I know that math is discussed a LOT around here (and I've read almost all of it), but I appreciate anyone talking through with me. Thanks so much.
  19. Don't you come crying to me when you..... Nope. I said don't come crying to me. But really, I gave hugs when they were little. But now I just shake my head and snicker.
  20. I haven't heard much of Niacin by itself. But B-complex is good for depression.
