  1. I would recomment that SHE figure out how to fit an entire year's curriculum into just a few months. She knows that X must be complete in order to complete this year, so this is HER problem to fix. Not yours. Regarding the ex - if he's in a situation where he is depended upon to be a co-parent, than this needs to be dealt with.
  2. This sounds brilliant! I had no idea that that's what that book was like. Thanks for the review. To quote another person's response, you hit the "quote" button on the bottom right of the screen. It'll bring up a box with the quote in it and you can type before or after it. You can also delete portions of it if you want to only respond to a part of it.
  3. My older son in 7th this year is using: Math - TT Pre-Alg Writing - IEW Medieval themed book Grammar - R&S 7 Spelling - SWO-G History/Literature - MFW RTR Science - first year of Rainbow Science Basketball and tennis My other son will be in 7th next year. Tentative plan: Math - TT7 Writing - IEW SWI B Grammar - All in One series (from MFW) Spelling - AAS 5 History/Literature - SL core 4 Science - SL core 4 Basketball and tennis and guitar
  4. Can someone tell me, or show me, which 3 books of this series makes up the middle school years? I look on Amazon and there are a squillion used books, but I don't know which ones I should be looking for. Thanks
  5. We're doing this now. It is real science, age appropriate for middle school, labs that go with the lessons, everything included in the lab kits. It's been wonderful here - a great bridge into high school.
  6. Nope. Haven't even looked into Omnibus. :001_smile: Will do, and thanks for another suggestion.
  7. That's what we use for writing instruction now. I liked that with MFW, that I wouldn't need anything extra for writing. But this is what I would add if I needed to add more instructions. I do like the looks of Oak Meadow for sciences, historys and extras. About their English, do they read more than just three books listed in their catalog for each grade? I really wanted more books - don't need as much as SL, but more than three. Would love to hear more about that. And of course, I didn't think of buying from Amazon. Duh (slaps forehead!) I've also looked at their 7th and 8th grade stuff since that's where we'll be next year. Could you tell me what you don't like about it? Thanks for sharing. I'm ok with SL for history and my older son would do just fine with all the books. My younger - not so much. I just hate the idea of buying SL, then adding so much that it just becomes a basket of books. I do love SL - really wish they would up their high school levels. I've never heard of Hewitt - I'll check that out. I've looked into WP in the past and have ruled them out. Thanks for the suggestions. Would love any other ideas.
  8. I know that most of us get worried staring high school in the face. I won't go into all my fears, but can I just ask some questions about curriculum? I do have older daughters, but they were public schooled the whole way, so high school at home is new for me. I really want MFW secularly. Is there such a thing? I want everything scheduled. I want real books with strong literary analysis and writing instruction. We've used SL and MFW in the past. I love SL, but writing instruction is lacking. I can add that to SL, but hate to just add everything when there may be something already out there. I do like MFW, but I'm just worried that the bible will be to overwhelming. We are Christians - it isn't a theological problem - but it seems like there's just so much. I've looked at Oak Meadow, but that's a bit costly. Of course I know that every year from here on out will be more. I've read stuff on TOG, but that looks way overwhelming for me. As my siggie says, I have a full plate with schooling the boys, girls in college and me working every weekend. I need smooth and painless, but I want thorough. Can y'all just name some open and go high school stuff that I can research? Or can someone who does MFW for high school tell me if after the first year, can the bible stuff kinda come out? Thanks so much..
  9. Wow, Lori D!! I'm not the OP but I sure appreciate all your efforts here. Thanks so much.
  10. Here is one thread with lots of caffeinated info. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236928&highlight=french+press I think there was another one, hang on.... http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237088&highlight=french+press There's lots of reading there for you. Have fun!
  11. Thanks so much for the french press and cold press information. I won a gift card at work and treated myself to a french press and coffee bean grinder. I also bought some syrups and creams. We had hot fancy drinks the first day and cold fancy drinks the next. They were yummy. I really wondered if all the hoohaw about less acid with the cold press was real or not. It is. Impressive actually. Thanks again!
  12. The boys and I are starting astronomy and this is the first activity. I very seldom do any activity, but this is probably a good one to do and keep throughout the rest of the year while we're studying it. Can y'all share how you and your kids made a model of the planets. God skipped over all creativity when making me (not that I've figured out what He replaced it with), so I'm in need of ideas. Thanks so much for your help.
  13. Rainbow Science. It's a two year program that covers physics and chemistry the first year: biology and earth science the second. The lab equipment makes it a little costly but it includes everything for all the experiments, so for me it's worth it. I bought the text and teacher's manual used through here.
  14. Can a french press be used to make hot tea? I realize that it shouldn't be the same one that's used for coffee, but could I make hot tea with loose tea leaves the same way as making coffee? It seems like I could. Also, can I use a french press to make cold brew coffee? Again, it seems like I'd be able to, just wondered if someone does this and could verify. Thanks.
  15. 80 miles east of Dallas - by the look of my trampoline, we got about 7-8 inches.
  16. I know we have quite a few college professors here, but do any of you teach online? If so, could you tell me what that looks like as far as number of hours, the actual "what exactly do you do?" and a general pay scale. Is the student interaction meaningful? Does the university tell you what/how to teach or do you have some autonomy? I'll probably come up with some more questions.... Thanks.
  17. Hoe does she sleep? Does she wake up a lot during the night?
  18. Does the cold brew need to be kept in the refrigerator? I like my coffee super hot, so I guess I would add hot water, then heat the whole thing in the microwave? Or can it be kept on the counter for a few days? I've never heard of cold brewed coffee - am I the only one?
