  2. I've been offline since last Friday. Youngest spent 8 days in Chicago at a headache inpatient facility. Lots of extra spending and missed work. I wasn't going to take days off since she was adamant she could and wanted to do this by herself. So, with some trepidation, I dropped her off on Tuesday. However, they tried a medication that completely zonked her on Thursday, and she needed someone there to advocate for her. So my brother went on Thursday and stayed with her, and I ended up going up there on Friday and moving in, and we just came home today. Learned a lot, and still have some tweaking of medications and therapies, but possibly found an underlying cause (need more testing). Other than that I have no idea what has been going on in the outside world - I've been in my little hospital bubble.

  5. DH did it for his, but I'm 99% sure his is a FFEL, so it wouldn't qualify. https://www.npr.org/2022/10/17/1129402200/after-gop-challenges-many-borrowers-say-their-loans-dont-qualify-for-relief?utm_term=nprnews&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=npr&fbclid=IwAR0FO7JHtkQuza-3AoIsCMyrqs5CY5IDNNewA_v_BYmGmi4uIwm3p634jUg
  6. I just got back from my covid & flu shots. Glad to get it done today. Now, I just have to get my 20 year old to schedule them.

  9. History 1, English 1 (I supplemented writing), Nature Art .5, Epic Poetry .5, World Religions .5 is what they got with BYL.
  10. My kids are bright, but probably not gifted, so I can't speak to whether it would work for an accelerated younger kid. My two did BYL 10 as a Freshman and a Sophomore. They both enjoyed and learned a lot from BYL 10. We didn't do the Biology. History went very well; I was wary since neither of my high schoolers like graphic novels, but they really liked the Cartoon Guides. Literature is a nice mix of classic and newer stuff. You'd want to probably come up with your own discussion questions for literature - the questions given (which also don't have answers given) tend more toward the "What happened?" rather than Why?. Although they didn't dig the epic poetry, that was hands down the best discussions we had last year. World Religions was a favorite of one kid, and "meh" for the other. LOL. Nature Art was well-done, although it wasn't a favorite of either. Writing is very light in BYL, and I recommend supplementing that (which you're planning so you're good there). They're SLOWLY working through level 11 this year. I've picked up a lot more working hours this school year, so I am less involved this year. They are doing the work mostly independently and it's going well, but so far, nothing has really sparked their imagination this year. I don't feel like I know enough about this level to give much of a review though.

  14. While I've had some interesting housing situations growing up, we've always had access to plumbing. My father grew up without indoor plumbing - he was the youngest of 7. His house was a mishmash of rooms, when another baby was born, my grandfather went to the old railroad and took some ties and built another room. It burned down when I was really little, so it's pretty vague in my mind. I have not lived without indoor plumbing except for a summer when we lived in a tent in a friend's backyard. We used their indoor plumbing though. We lived in a camper for a few months, but it had plumbing as long as the water didn't freeze.
  15. I used to go by a version of my name, but I changed it to this for privacy. I was a history major in college, but ended up an accountant, so I went with "Historically Accurate". No avatar because I am, well, lazy.

  18. We lived in a tent/camper 2x while I was growing up. We had a couple of tents for a summer in a friend's backyard - obviously we used their facilities, but it was hard (I knew this even though I was about 7 years old). Then, we lived in a camper when I was 12 for about 6-8 months - we're in Northern IL and we lived through a bitterly cold winter in it. My sheets and covers used to freeze to the side of the camper, our water froze every morning (meaning no water - it was my brother's job to go break the ice every morning), winter clothes just take up a lot more space so we were really crowded. Propane tanks were hard to find here since the sizing was a little weird on that camper - I remember we didn't have heat for a few days one time while my father sourced propane. Years later, my aunt and uncle bought a old camper to live in while building their house. They lived in theirs over the summer - they had a bug infestation that caused my aunt to end up in the hospital for allergic reactions to the bug bites. I remember their fridge went out (RV fridges can be touchy since they are designed to switch between power sources). My mom lived in a big RV following her retirement. She traveled and didn't park it for more than a month or two. She had problems with the RV leaking and breaking down a lot due to the fact that they just aren't made to live in full time. The fridge also died within 2 years, as did one of her slides. RV's can be lived in, but they really aren't designed/built to withstand full-time living, so they tend to break with full-time use. Overall, it can be done, but it can be difficult. But if the alternative is difficult, it's kind of a "Choose your difficult." I'd make sure they know the costs and hassles - sewer (they'll have to pull it to dump somewhere, campgrounds may charge for the service), grey water dumping would need to be done often for a family, propane is pricey, may have to set up/tear down beds/dinettes/chairs every single day depending on floor plan. Make sure the rules are set out up front - facility use in the "big house", when/how often can they hang out inside, if the camper becomes unusable, can they move in?, etc.
  19. I have a Goovi that I bought at Menards in August. He's not a smart one - so we have to block him in to keep him in one room. Love "Mo" - but we only have hard floors, I don't know how he'd do on carpet. Cat hasn't ridden him yet, but she hunts him constantly.

  21. I eat pretty much anything except dairy - I'm trying to continue to lose weight though. DD is a picky one, and she prefers "kid" foods - pizza, chicken fingers, fries, etc. Usually what happens is lunch is more convenience foods (even if it's homemade chicken fingers or something), and dinner is a little more "grown up".
  22. I just booked a hotel for 5 days at Mayo Clinic - middle DD has a week of testing there at the end of November. Gonna have to work extra, and I'm taking out my sick time from my second job (since I have to use it up by February anyway) to help cover it. Anyone have ideas of what to make in a hotel room with a small kitchenette?

  25. This is the one we ended up with for DD. It seems to work well, but she hasn't had any trips longer than a half hour or so yet. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P1TDM28/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
