  1. Does he have sensory issues? He seems too young maybe to safely use a weighted blanket but maybe that eventually would help. With my nonsleeper, I had to hold her forcibly still too get her asleep much of the time. Now, as a teen, she uses a weighted blanket.
  2. Make sure your bedroom is absolutely dark. If you have any lights, they should be amber or red, not full spectrum or green or blue. A sleeping mask can help if your bedroom is not dark.
  3. Where is a good place to purchase individual biology lab supplies for one student? I am looking for things like microscopy stains, not dissection kits. We are focusing on cell biology and microbiology and will do anatomy later in a separate course. I have equipment from a friend but need the consumables. I am hoping not to buy a big, expensive kit but to buy my supplies individually.
  4. My daughter and I both seem to grind. My daughter was given a mouth guard that did not cover all her teeth. It seems to have changed her bite. We went to an orthodontist who told her not to use that guard and instead made a custom retainer that fits over the teeth kind of like invisilign (but only a couple of hundred dollars). We also both do posture exercises from the chiropractor. I did not get a mouth guard but have been trying to train myself not to grind. What seems to make the biggest impact is upper body exercises where I move my shoulders and arms around and where I loosen my neck. Seems that once all that is loose, then my jaw loosens up too. So, before bed, try some arm circles, Hawkins arms, stretches, and gentle swiveling of the neck. You can also lie on the floor on your back with your head on a book or two and have someone slowly swivel your head from side to side. (See Alexander technique for a more detailed explanation.) You have to relax for them to do this, so you can use this method to train yourself to relax your neck muscles. Try talking or singing during this and see if you can remained relaxed. Also, when reading, try to swivel your neck now and then so that it doesn't freeze up. I am not functioning completely well, but the above exercises have made a dramatic improvement.
  5. Logan is my cousin's child. I amazed that people here are following his story!
  6. Most of our drive times are 30 plus minutes. We usually listen to a lecture from The Great Courses on the way to keep the learning going.

  8. I had lots of little fibroids, which caused extremely heavy bleeding and long periods. You may need extra iron, if your experience is like mine. I was anemic, and my uterus became enlarged. Eventually, I had a hysterectomy. Within a couple of weeks, I started feeling much much healthier, even though I was still recovering from surgery. Emotionally, it was hard, because I wanted to have children. But we adopted our wonderful daughter, and I have no regrets.
  9. Thank you! I had just given up hope that anyone would reply!
  10. Has anyone included the Chinese historian Sima Qian in readings of the work of early historians? I am wondering what parts might be most interesting or useful to read. Or perhaps you could suggest a book of excerpts. We have already done Herodotus and Thucydides and are planning to do some more Romans. But I would like to broaden the focus to look at early historians, not just early historians of the west.
  11. I feel hot all over and my ears turn red. I feel very thirsty. This lasts a few minutes. At night I stick my feet and arms out from under the covers to cool myself. I have been having these for a decade and a half or so, and they are less intense than they used to be. They usually come multiple times a day. A hot flash almost always comes after I go to bed, often thoroughly rousing me when I had been tired. They wake me up during the night and in the morning too. A drink of cold water as soon as the hot flash starts can make it less intense.
  12. Is this Visual Latin? It did not work for us. I think my daughter did not get enough practice using it. In the end, we dropped latin.
  13. Our chiropractor came up with exercises for my child to do. He also did adjustments.
  14. When my child raged, I had her sit on the screaming chair until she calmed down enough to sit still for two minutes. I would always stay in her line of vision, cleaning and trying to exude calmness. Every once in a while I'd say something encouraging about her good work she was doing on her feelings. Once she calmed down and left the chair, she would be much calmer and happier. The hard part is getting your child to stay in the screaming spot. I sometimes held my child in place at first. I also kept the chair away from the wall to prevent wall damage and away from any throw able objects. And in the screaming chair, my child could say anything she wanted, even hateful, nasty things.
  15. The person in the trailer is staying with a friend at the moment.
  16. No children there. What would the health department do, condemn the place and leave the inhabitant homeless?
  17. The person may be hesitant to use a professional due to extremely poor living conditions, unfortunately, along with a lack of funds.
  18. Do any of you know what to do to rid a trailer of rattlesnakes? It is in the desert and there is considerable clutter that they may be hiding behind.
  19. I have a half sister who is around sixteen years younger. I see her once a year. We are not extremely close, but I am very glad to have her. I am a late bloomer, having come finally to parenthood at forty one. So, she ends up being the one with similar-age kids. We have a lot in common!
  20. As someone whose daughter recently had a cholesteatoma removed from her ear, I recommend you go to an ENT or ear specialist and get to the bottom of this. Ear pressure problems are thought to maybe cause cholesteatoma. You might also check out TMJ, but check the ears first. A regular doctor is only equipped to diagnose common ear problems.
  21. We went in for the office visit today. The doctor suctioned the cholesteatoma out of the ear canal, and my daughter can hear again. There was no perforation of the eardrum or middle ear involvement. There is some erosion of the external ear canal. The doctor recommend ear plugs when showering or swimming, along with continued monitoring in case the cholesteatoma comes back. He also gave us the name of an ear specialist we can go to for a second opinion.
