  1. Statista has cumulative numbers of cases per 100,000 people. North Dakota is top, followed by South Dakota and then Iowa.
  2. My husband was sick in mid-March. In August he tested positive for antibodies. I believe the test was accurate.
  3. Has anyone ever started a group for ex-homeschoolers? I'm thinking it could be a local group, and perhaps it could provide some support function for current homeschoolers in a particular area. Or perhaps someone could make an online group just focused on mutual support in the difficult task of building a life after homeschooling. I finished homeschooling a little over a year ago. I floundered a bit, but had one very meaningful gig helping a child whose homeschooling mom had passed away. Then I started tutoring others, including disabled adults. Things got rocky when covid hit, but I learned to tutor online. And now, I have lost that first job that sustained me through my initial non-homeschooling days. The boy's dad decided to do the homeschooling. Now I am grieving the loss of that relationship. It is really hard. Tutoring is satisfying, but it is not the same as teaching your own children!
  4. When my chikd, who also had experienced trauma, was a toddler, I did a formal "cuddle time"with her. I would set the timer and sit in our cuddle time chair. We would play with special cuddle time toys. Sometimes I would give her a bottle and play eye contact games. I would make funny noises to encourage eye contact. I would sing. She was required to stay on my lap until the timer rang.
  5. I'd also probably buy the old Times Tales flip chart if anyone has one to sell! I loaned my to someone, can't remember who!
  6. I am looking for a teaching tool for multiplication facts for an eleven-year-old with delayed math skills. My own child learned the multiplication facts around that age from Times Tales, back when Times Tales relied on a chart. Now they have a hokey video instead which seemed extremely babyish to my student and provoked a huge negative reaction. So, I need to find something else. My student is very very very visual, so I am thinking some picture-based system. So far I see Right Brain Multiplication and Division and Times Tables The Fun Way. Has anyone used these? How did they work? Or is there a better option?
  7. If you find an association with food triggers, try taking a fiber supplement. For me, that has greatly reduced the incidence of ocular migraine. Also, pay attention to anything you have eaten before they occur. My triggers include chocolate, red grapes, black raisins, and possibly cinnamon. Sometimes it helps to take extra fiber when I eat one of these foods.
  8. I wonder if occupational therapists should be used to help people learn mask-wearing skills.
  9. My brother, who is big on herd immunity as the right approach, believes that fifty percent of people are naturally immune. I believe that figure is based on how many people got it on closed systems like boats. So, he thinks just twenty percent of people need to get it. Add the twenty and fifty and you have herd immunity. He thinks that has probably been achieved in the New York area.
  10. Those of us in New York and New Jersey were guinea pigs, the ones who had to feel their way in the dark and figure out how to bring the curve down. We have suffered a lot to do this. And in the meantime, all of the other states can learn from what we have done. Because of our suffering, they are in a much better situation than we were when our curve began to climb. I feel we have earned the right to not be reinfected, especially by people from states who have refused to learn from our example.
  11. I do understand that the resource book is extras. I ordered the toolkit book a few days ago. With the challenging kids I am helping, I need lots of resources!
  12. I am thinking of getting the Dyscalculia Resource book. If I got the e-book on my computer, could I print from it? In these social distancing days I would not have anywhere to go to photocopy pages from a print book. I don't have a scanner, so I really need a printable version. Would the e-book do that?
  13. Skype does have the share screen ability. I do not believe my student has a touchscreen device.
  14. Does anyone have any suggestions for working over Skype with a ten-year-old with delayed skills in math and reading (second grade on math maybe and close to third grade on reading). I'm not much of an online learning fan, so I'm not really up on this stuff. He is a very visual child. So far, I have made bingo charts for him to print out, so we play addition and phonics bingo. We also read together, him with a physical copy of a book and me with an electronic version.

  20. Now that my child has graduated, I have been tutoring. And now, of course, my tutoring has moved online. People used to hand me checks to pay me, but now I need to get paid electronically. What is the best way to do that? My clients all bank at different places, so I need something flexible and not bank-specific. And I'd rather not pay fees.
  21. My child is a music major. Ear training, choir, voice lessons, piano lessons, performances of her compositions (three scheduled in April) -- none of these lend themselves to online study.
  22. Does anyone know of good supplemental resources for teaching students how to unpack word problems? I am looking for something that would work with someone on the fifth to sixth grade level. Any websites or book recommendations would be wonderful!
  23. I wonder if it would help if you created a chart of common problems and strategies to solve them. Then you could direct the child to check the chart and see if they could find an answer there.
  24. The best med I have taken is Dymista. Then my insurance company quit covering it. I recommend it if you can afford it. Maybe a head CT and an ENT would help. Daily neti pot helps me a lot.
  25. When I was in eighth grade, my math teacher gave us a take-home math test for spring break. I was an excellent student with a strong sense of justice. So, in protest, I did not do it. He handed my paper back to me with probably my first F ever on it. He said not a word. I felt good because I stood up for myself. I showed him!
