  1. Just a thought, but once she is gone make sure your daughters know not to go anywhere near her should she be seen in the area. Her invitation to swim would seriously creep me out.
  2. Is your daily schedule based on the amount of time you plan to spend on each subject, or on the amount of work you want to complete each day? I'm trying to determine if I want to give my dd an assignment to complete per subject each day or if I should specify a time frame for each subject and just keep working until time runs out. I read WTM last week and before I've ever cracked a book I'm already leaving the whole "Charlotte Mason gentle approach" behind, which I love in theory. I think I NEED the framework that SWB beautifully lays out. These types of decisions really stress me out. I'm actually quite worried that we won't find our groove right away and I'll feel behind and inadequate right from the start.
  3. Certainly a life-changing mistake but not the end of the world. Praying for you and your daughter. :grouphug:
  4. DH and I plan to take dd soon so we have not seen it yet, but both sons went with my two teenage nephews. DS19 was telling me that he nearly lost it at the end, and one of my nephews did cry. DS said it was too close to home, since he is the same age as the kid in the movie and feels like they "grew up" together. He said he was thinking "Oh man, they seriously aren't going to end it like this!!" I love my boys.
  5. I love how you tailor-made his curriculum to work for him! I know that is what home schoolers do but this is our first year and I have to remind myself that I can change what isn't working. Thanks!
  6. Congratulations! It's clear that he has the drive and intelligence to achieve such an awesome accomplishment but may I ask what curriculum he used prior to his taking this course?
  7. I liked them all but thought Lorenzo was the cutest. :) He got my vote.
  8. My oldest has been doing this since he was 14. Now at 19 and home for the summer from college, he's supervising the crew and makes great money. I highly recommend this type of work for teenagers. He really enjoys working hard in the sun.
  9. DD9 is very social with many friends so I worried about this as the end of the year approached. Not one tear was shed, which surprised us all. I do wonder how long it will be before she wants to return. We have talked about hsing through middle school and reassessing for high school. As of today, she is perfectly fine with that plan.
  10. We just pulled our daughter and will officially begin hsing in the fall, although she is itching to start sooner. I do have twinges of "What in the world are we doing??" but my reservations are rooted in losing my salary. I'm excited for what it means for her. Choir is the only activity I think she would miss and the middle school and high school choir directors have already told us they have had homeschoolers in the past so the precedence has been set. If she still desires to we will pursue those activities.
  11. I noticed about 10 years ago that my extended family in florida only wore no show socks. They gave me and my kids funny looks because we were wearing low cut socks at the time. I took their lead and began buying no show socks for summer wear. However, I personally like to have my lower leg covered in the winter (we live in the mid-west) so I buy crew socks for winter jean wear.
  12. In the district where we live they have grade centers: K-2 Primary 3-5 Intermediate 6-8 Middle 9-12 High Each center is in a different building. The high school is a separate district from the elementary schools so it is run by different administrators.
  13. Congratulations! What a wonderful performance. I'm a true believer in music education and I love to see children (people?) become so passionate that they really strive to achieve their best. Not many make it to this level, though.
  14. I don't mean to sound ignorant but we are just beginning our journey and I would love to find used book sales. Where would I even start??
  15. I took my mom and mother-in-law to lunch yesterday and spoke with both on the phone today. We spend quite a bit of time at mil's house and I'm cool with that. I'm very fortunate to have an awesome mil who I love very much.
  16. We are bringing our youngest home at the end of this year to hs 4th grade in the fall. The one thing she is afraid of is losing her friends. I promised we will make an effort to keep those friendships so I bought her an address book and she has been recording phone numbers.
  17. Still waiting here. DD is in third grade and took it for the first time this year so I don't have recent experience, but a number of years ago when ds took the test through NUMATS I seem to remember we got the individual report in April.
  18. We trained our dog to ring a set of bells when she had to go out and it was our ds's job to do so. DD was 7 months old and sitting in her high chair next to the door when the dog rang the bell so she called her brother. It shocked me, but clearly pleased her that I understood her and knew what she meant. From that day on her language sky rocketed and she was speaking in complete sentences by her first birthday.
