  1. I wish I could send you a dinner or a trip for a massage or something. :tongue_smilie:
  2. Is this sound a North American phenomenon? Would a British person say words with the schwa sound? I am trying to imagine a Britain saying progression...they would say the first syllable as a long "o" - is that correct? An American OTOH would (most likely) say "prugression". If I have that correct, is the schwa a difference in accent or perhaps laziness? Thanks for any help with this. Alexandra
  3. Someone I know was talking about how hearing about this home invasion (where the daughters and wife were killed and the husband badly beaten) had her really freaked out. I turn on my computer and the first headline I see is how European Muslims are training for terror attacks. Meanwhile...I am reading a lovely book called Mountains Beyond Mountains. It is about a Harvard-trained ID doctor who is working in Haiti. Inspiring. Makes me cry every 10 pages or so. I just want to support this guy and what he is doing. OTOH it makes me wonder why doesn't HE get some press here? Why do we always give to spotlight to the people who are behaving really, really badly. The only way this guy (Dr. Paul Farmer) will make it into the news in any significant way is if...well he does something heinous. If he does something truly creepy THEN the CNN cameras will get down to Haiti just as fast as they can. Is it time for a new news network or at the very least a new focus? Alexandra
  4. I read a post about a lady who had 30 plot points. I google the term and somewhere came across the idea that there are 3 plot points in most movies... So before I can hammer out my masterpiece I thought I should understand this term and just how many I need. 30? 3? 16.5? TYVM Alexandra
  5. What do you find the easiest to get your thoughts down? Thanks! Alexandra
  6. with something like Confortis. The fleas jump on your pet and die soon thereafter. I would try to avoid something that was throughout the house like a bomb. Goodluck
  7. So I take the test and much to my chagrin, dismay and annoyance, I am not brilliant at the verbal section. This is bad b/c I know that I will really be weak at the math section. So in order to study and retain the meanings of word like effulgent...should I write them on index cards and review them daily? How can I drum new information into my middle aged brain? I actually love words, word origens and so I think this will be fun. I just wondered if anyone has a great method out there for this sort of studying. Thanks!
  8. Is the GRE like the SAT? It seems to me that it used to have an analytical section but not anymore - is that right? I am going to buy a study guide today or tomorrow but I wondered if it is just basic vocab. and math? If so, are they weighted equally? I have asked a few friends about this but have been told that the GRE is different from what they had taken a few years ago. Thanks!
  9. Navigating the day with 22 children was something that I found less rewarding. I am pretty certain that I will pursue SPED - I am just trying to gather information about the BCBA field. Thanks
  10. It seemed to be just a qote they pulled to fill out the article. I think it is the Sept/October issue.
  11. "Choose a book and then enlist a reading partner," suggests SWB co-author of TWTM.
  12. I picked up the Sept/Oct WW magazine and there was an article about reading and how it helped people with weight issues. The first part of the article featured a quote from SWB. Soooo... I thought it was neat and would share here.
  13. I was just wondering what the job was like. I am interested in reseaching the working conditions etc. It is impossible to observe people doing this work for confidentiality reasons. I am just starting the process of looking into the job and trying to decide if I have what it takes. lIn my work life before kids I was a bilingual teacher in the elementary classroom. At this time in my life I have the time to get a graduate degree and was considering SPED with an emphasis in BCBA. I am halfway through a book by Temple Grandin - which really captured my interest. Other than that I am sorry to say I know very little about the treatment of autism. Just testing the waters here - thanks so much for any thoughts on this type of work. I really appreciate the expertise on this board - esp. when it comse to such specialized areas. Alexandra
  14. I was wondering if anyone would like to comment on this type of work. I thought that some people might have used this type of therapy for an autistic child or perhaps might actually work in this field. I am interested in studying this and I am trying to find out more about it. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Alexandra
  15. I had a problem once with my ps years ago. I called a different school district and told them about my problem and would they consider giving my the tools and right words to address the problem that I was dealing with. The head of the department told me that I had the right to the services my son needed and to simply say "XYZ". With the magic words I was able to get exactly what I needed. If you called a neighboring district and emphasize that your problem is not with them but that you need help...I think they might give you some tools with which to combat this terrible situation. I am disgusted and mortified by this situation and would take this as a huge threat to my child. Had the boy done this to a girl his a$$ would have been in police custody. No double standards.
  16. Engineers! When I was doing tons and tons of research on dyslexia it seemed that they were all engineers in the making. My nephew - had major learning difficulties and general quirkiness is now a professor of engineering. The whole family acted like he had huge problems his whole childhood. Poor kid....full ride scholarship - all the way to Phd.
  17. It has been around a while and it seems to me that the reviews at Amazon talk about the diet helping this issue. The diet is basically that you link and balance protein and carbs. For every 15 grams of protien you eat, you must balance with 30 grams of carbs. You can not have more than 30 grams of carbs in a 2 hour window. I am not positive if I have the details totally right. Best of luck. Alexandra
  18. Does it improve the quality of the egg and increase Omega 3 in the eggs if you provide a little garden for the chickens? Or is this just too over the top?
  19. If so would you care to share what worked for you? I know that I need to count something...just can't decide what...calories, points, carbs? I think these 25 pounds are welded on! :tongue_smilie:
  20. I would imagine a card would be so appreciated. My dearest dog ever died last September and a df took me for breakfast a few days after it happened. Another dear friend came over the day after it happened and cooked breakfast for my kids while I cried to her. My sil sent me mugs with pictures of Louis on them - that way I can see a picture of him every morning. I can't tell you how much I appreciated all that! How about a picture frame?
  21. talked about why ladies in Asian countries did not suffer from PPD. The news story attributed that to the fact that Asian countries (as well as some others) ate plenty of cold water fish and consumed a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids. I wonder if you would benefit from some supplemental Omega 3s. So sorry you are going through this! Having a newborn is a rollercoaster ride. I remember this...one minute I felt madly in love with this new little person, the next minute I felt so sad and overwhelmed. Sending warm thoughts your way! Alexandra
  22. bad. Save your money. You know how Will Ferrell is often simply painful to watch? He still is. Blech.
