  1. Are the online videos the same as the webinars?? When I downloaded them from the site, all I get is an audio lecture??
  2. They love tomatoes! My local garden center said not to kill them though. If I remember right, they turn into wolf moths?? She also said they were very beneficial to other crops. I wish I could remember more of the conversation but I think it was citrus. She said that she and her daughter raise them until they turn into moths then releases them. She even offered to take any taken off our plants. You should check at your local garden center and see what they say.
  3. I've never used MM but I've read here that it is very easy to supplment along with MUS. I'm using Life of Fred Fractions as a supplement to MUS and am loving it! It's also very easy to supplement with other curriculums. It's definitely worth taking a look.
  4. Well, I'll give it a shot. Math is foundational; adding builds upon subtraction which builds upon multiplication& division, etc. Your daughter is moving into more advanced mathematics without really understanding arithmetic. I know she tested at Episolon but it sounds like it was only because she knows how to plug numbers into formulas. I would seriously consider stepping back to earlier MUS books in an attempt to work on those foundational skills. She will probably progess really quickly but hopefully will begin to understand important topics like place value, deconstructing a higher value and the like. I would also recommend picking up a copy of Liping Ma's book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics. There has been a fascinating thread about the book here for the past few days.
  5. This thread has been fascinating! It encouraged me to pick up my copy again and really read it. I've already had a few of those "aha" moments. For example, I just learned that multiplying by the reciprocal of the divisor, 1 3/4 divided by 1/2 means that 1/2 of that number is 1 3/4 (pg. 60.) I get it but I do stress some just thinking about how to "really" articulate concepts like these to my boys. I'm not really technically-inclined. I'd much rather discuss the differences between Ancient Sparta and Athens over algorithms anyday but this book has encouraged me to try. I just hope I do it justice!
  6. I've been reading the math threads and I can't find anywhere what MEP actually stands for?
  7. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. :grouphug:
  8. This would have been a great question for SWB's videos on Youtube.
  9. Well I may be completely off base but I would think that SWB's method harkens back to methods used before "modern education" came to be. I am a firm believer that quantity does not lead to quality which seems to be modern education's answer to writing. But again...I may be way off! :D
  10. My son is a strong reader but I'm having him go through book 6 (which he's 1/2 way through.) I think ETC really reinforces the phonics rules. The words in book 5 get progressively more difficult and book 6 works on many of the multi-letter phonograms. I feel they still have value and if nothing else, it's good handwriting practice. :D
  11. Well, according to SWB and others that I've read, keeping a timeline is best started during the logic stage. They have a better understanding of "time" and how things relate than younger kids.
  12. I'm considering using this as a supplement for my son this summer. He just finished MUS Delta and will be moving into Epsilon (fractions) this next school year. I'm very happy with MUS but I was thinking LOF might be a good preview for the upcoming school year. He's a bit of a reluctant reader so I like both the math and reading practice with LOF. He's going into 4th grade but he has a late birthday so he's an older 4th grader (10 in the fall.) I saw that LOF was listed as a middle grades curriculum but I was on their site and saw the previews and the reading doesn't look above his level. Any thoughts or experiences would be much appreciated! I should add that he's fairly strong at math but I'm wondering if it would be good to start now or maybe wait a little??
  13. It would probably depend on "how much" grammar he's taken in the past. If you listen to SWB's lecture on writing, she suggests that older student's who've had little or no grammar should go back a grade level so a 4th grader should really start FLL 3. My son is almost finished with FLL 3 and there is quite a bit of diagramming and in depth grammar instruction so it might be worth taking a look at. I haven't picked up my copy of FLL 4 yet...
  14. :bigear: I've been wondering myself. My boys have had a lot of fun playing with their Snap Circuits set.
  15. :D We love the Bunnicula books along with the How to Train Your Dragon series...
  16. We're severely cutting back tv time (as soon as the Stanley Cup playoffs are over :D) so I'm looking for ideas to keep the boys busy. We have a lot of board games & Legos so I'm looking for other ideas/kits that kids might like. I recently bought a Snap Circuits set that they're really enjoying + it's educational. They're boys so hands on is good. Any ideas???
  17. I'm also not a big Tom Cruise fan and I really don't like vampire movies. Put the 2 together...Interview with a Vampire. Hated it!
  18. Thanks for the info! So is G.A. a curriculum that you only use for 1 year? Hmmm...I'm wondering if I should just start off with Elementary Greek and save the expense of of eventually buying 2 curriculums?? More to consider now...
  19. I've been reading the recent Greek threads with much interest. I was planning on trying Latin again with my oldest but he is not interested. We used Prima Latina 2 years ago and while I enjoyed the program, he whined the entire year. I'm thinking of giving him a little more time and picking it up again later. In the meantime, I'd like to do Greek. I'm leaning towards Koine Greek and would really like them to be able to read the New Testament in its original form. I saw that Dr. Bluedorn wrote Greek Alphabaterian and from what I've read, its methods sounds very similiar to Wanda Sanseri's. We already use SWR for spelling so I'm thinking it might be a good fit. Elementary Greek also sounds good too...Any comments?
  20. That's awesome! Thank you. We've been reading Hakim's "The New Nation" so just to clarify, that's not on the schedule for week 2, correct?
  21. We had to take our laptop is because of a virus so I can't look at next week's reading schedule. We just started Unit 1. Could someone please let me know what the reading schedule is for week 2 for LG and UG?? I actually have the disc so am I allowed to load the unit onto another computer in the house? Thanks a bunch!
  22. I was thinking of the Swiffer but I don't think I'm suppose to put water on the hardwood. I've read some reviews on other vacuums but none have been good.
