  1. I can't get into a fall mood until the nighttime temperature dips into the 40s. Right now, our nighttime temperatures are in the upper 70s & low 80s, so I figure I've got awhile to wait--probably until late October.
  2. I either give it to EK, who loves it, or I throw it away. However, I do love the peanut butter stuff in the middle of Peanut Butter Oreos.
  3. Thank you. For the past few years, dh & I have been working with couples who have a history of domestic violence. We try to help them turn things around so that the cycle can end. In once of the instances in which we were involved, however, the husband actually did kill his wife and is now serving time in prison. It's a sad, scary situation, and so very frustrating.
  4. We've used Netflix for a year and a half, and during that time, we've had 4 unplayable DVD's. The very first DVD we received wouldn't play. Six months later, we had another one that wouldn't play. Six months after that (which was 6 months ago), we had 2 cracked DVD's in one week. Since those, we haven't had any bad DVD's.
  5. Apparently they do. :( I ordered 12 items. 4 were on backorder, so RR sent me an e-mail, which said, in part: "On expedited orders, all available items will be shipped within 2 business days. Backorder items will be shipped on a normal basis. If you have not already expedited your order, it can be expedited for a $10.00 fee. ...On regular orders, we hold orders with backorders for up to 5 business days, hoping that the backorder comes in so that we can send the entire order together. If backorders still have not arrived after 5 days, we will ship the portion of the order that is in stock. The backordered items will then ship to you after we receive them."
  6. It steams the water as it goes onto the pad, so the damp pad is fairly warm, but I'd prefer that there be some kind of steam jets that actually make contact with the floor itself. I find that my Swiffer Wet Jet actually does a better job.

  8. :iagree: completely. It's sad but not at all surprising that the sister won't leave, and even blames herself for not being "nicer". It's part of the mentality that goes with this kind of thing, and I've seen it happen over and over. :(
  9. Dh & I work with couples who have been involved in domestic violence situations such as this, and if the children are witnesses to his threats, the dad would be charged with child endangerment.
  10. My children have been homeschooled from the beginning of their education, and we have always intended to continue homeschooling until they've graduated from high school, barring unforeseeable circumstances, of course. One has already graduated, and, in fact, will be graduating from college in May 2012. (Unless something unforseeable happens, he will graduate with honors. Sorry--proud mama moment there. :D) We're already halfway through high school with our remaining child; she's going into 11th grade now. After that, I intend to homeschool other people's children as well. I guess I'm in it for the long haul. ;)
  11. Other than the Bible, my favorites are: fiction - This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti There are other books I enjoyed more, but this one was probably the most spiritually impacting book I've ever read. non-fiction - Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis It's an easy read, and the content is profound.
  12. I'm curious about Terra Nova. It looks good...kinda reminds me of Lost. The other one that looks good to me is the one about the young woman who works in police internal affairs--can't think of the name of it just now.
  13. Some time back, when I began to suspect the two of them as an item, I did a little researching to find out something about him. He was married and became a father at age 17, so he has a daughter who is actually about the same age as Casey, but he and his wife later divorced, and he has not remarried. Here's an article: http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2011/07/05/jose-baez-casey-anthonys-lawyer-from-troubled-son-to-star-defense-attorney/
  14. I've had a sneaking suspicion that there's a romantic thing going on between Casey and Jose. I hope I'm wrong.
  15. Apologies to those who wanted an "other" option. There weren't enough poll options to include that one along with the ones I did include. (We're limited to 10.)
  16. Same here. We have enough life insurance on dh & me that if either of us died tomorrow, there would be enough money to pay off the mortgage and all our other current indebtedness and still have enough to live on for some time. We have twice as much life insurance on dh as on me, since he is already working and would continue to do so, while I am a SAHM and would want to continue to homeschool until our youngest graduates (2 more years). Dh's company (he owns a small business and it is FINALLY in the black) could continue to operate, and I could draw some income from that. Also, I am currently teaching another child in addition to my own, as well as tutoring on the side. I would take on additional students and continue tutoring in order to have my own income.
  17. I am 50 years old, and I think I am one of the only people I know who still uses hairspray. I use styling gel on my wet hair, then blow dry it, then use my curling iron to make it behave, and finally, I use hairspray to hold it in place. On me, I hate the straight hairstyles that I see so many women sporting these days. I cannot fathom why people with wavy hair or even not-quite-straight hair would want to use a straightener, because my curling iron is one of my prized possessions! :D I've always felt that my hair looks and behaves better when it's permed--just to give it a little volume and a bit of a wave, but not the HUGE hair that was popular in the 80s--but perms are out of style nowadays, or so I'm told. Is it something about my age? (Is it because I can't get past the 80s?) I'm going to try to post a poll that will show if there's a correlation between age & hair styling preferences. Poll to come...
  18. Unfortunately, I know a few who fall into the "abuse the system" category, and it makes me angry because 1) it's unfair to their kids, who are going to have a tough time succeeding in life, so 2) they're going to become dependent on the rest of us to support them, and 3) that makes the rest of us look bad, as you said.
  19. I'm really sorry this has happened to you and your family, but I'm afraid I'm not following the story very well.
  20. I can send you a PDF of our school calendar if you want to see it. Our usual schedule is 6 weeks on, 1 week off, with a 6-week break from Thanksgiving to New Year's and another 6-week break from Memorial Day to July 4. Last year, I stepped away from that, and just scheduled a few days here and there for breaks, plus 3 weeks at Christmas. Without our 1-week breaks, it was probably the single most tiring school year we've ever had in 15 years of homeschooling! I'm going back to our usual schedule this year, but with slight modification: over the course of the summer, the dc participated in 4 weeks' worth of activities that I am counting as school time, so we'll wait until later to start, and we'll take only 4 weeks at Christmas instead of our usual 6. Anyway, here's our schedule for this year: School starts August 22, with holidays as follows: Labor Day off October 3-7 off November 21-25 off December 12-January 6 off February 20-24 off April 9-13 off May 21-25 standardized testing (Last day of school May 25) I can send you a PDF of our calendar if you want to see it.
