  1. My neighbor just called to invite my ds to her son's birthday party in a couple of weeks. When I asked her what time the party would be over, she said I could pick my son up around 7pm, but I could be a little late since a couple of the boys would be spending the night. When she had a back to school party for her son, she did the same thing, 2 boys spent the night and my son was not one of them. He came home very upset because he felt left out. He has spent the night at their house several times before. Am I behind the times, because I just didn't think this was very polite the first time she did it but I guess this is a regular thing for her.
  2. I ordered the V&V manual from Gander Publishing. Here is the link http://www.ganderpublishing.com/home.php I didn't see it for sale on the LinguiSystems website. The vocabulary books I'm thinking about ordering are published by LinguiSystems. I have not been to a V&V training session. The nearest center is in Charlotte, and that is over 1 1/2 hours away. So.... I plan on implementing it myself. Of course, once I get the manual and read it, I may change my mind :001_huh:
  3. I found that to be true for my dd. I ordered the Visualizing & Verbalizing Manual last week and I should get it today. Hopefully that will help. I also talked with someone from LinguiSystems, and she suggested using some of their Vocabulary books to help with dd's language delays, which in turn should help her reading. We are at the beginning of what I think will be a long journey, so I would love to hear what others have used :bigear:
  4. My dh has a section in his closet for shirts that have been worn once and can be worn again. For pants, if they can be worn again, he just hangs them back up with the others. My ds has decided the easiest way to deal with this is just to wear the same outfit 2 days in a row. :001_smile: He throws the clothes on the back of his chair at night and they are ready for him the next day. My dd can't imagine wearing clothes more than once. In fact, if they touch her body at all or if she thinks they have, they are dirty. I think she just hates to put clothes away. Me, I have a shelf in my closet where I put my pjs to be worn again. All others just get hung back up.
  5. I read The Shack for my book club a couple of months ago. I am a conservative Christian and I had huge problems with it. 1. The portrayal of God the Father was offensive to me. Where was God's holiness? 2. The Gospel message is incomplete. I know it's a work of fiction, but if you are going to write about how to have a relationship with God, you have to include the need for a saving faith in Christ and Christ alone. Without it, there is no relationship. After my book club meeting, I threw the book in the trash because I didn't want an unbeliever or new Christian to read it. I haven't lost a child or anyone close to me. Maybe if I had gone through that the book would have spoken to me and I could have overlooked the theology.
  6. We are in our first year of homeschooling and we had our dd 10 evaluated because of her poor reading comprehension. Her WISC-IV scores were low average for perceptual reasoning, high average for for working memory, and average for everything else, including IQ. She also took the Woodcock-Johnson Test of Achievement and her Reading Comprehension subtest score was Below Average and 17 points below her IQ. She was also evaluated by a Speech Therapist and was found to have mild delays in expressive and receptive language. The child psychologist thinks her problems with reading are due to her language delays and she highly recommended speech/language therapy. It is highly unlikely we could get that through the ps and we can't pay for it out of pocket. What would be a good program for me to use at home? I'm also having problems finding something to use to help her reading comprehension. She doesn't have problems decoding words. She just can't understand what she has read. We've already done the first book of Reading Detectives, but I haven't seen any progress. Should I continue with that and be more patient or is there something better out there? Thanks!
  7. I loved Kansas City!! One of the main reasons I love KC, is because it's close to my family. We moved to NC 8 years ago, and I have been trying to get back to KC ever since. I miss the snow and the barbeque. Dh is from NC and the kids consider NC home, so here we will stay.
  8. Allrecipes.com has an excellent Creme Brulee French Toast recipe that I make all the time and it is a big hit. Here's the link http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Creme-Brulee-French-Toast/Detail.aspx
  9. My whole family enjoys the soundtrack even ds, so I decided to pick up the book. It was very dark, creepy, weird, and not like the musical at all. I only got through the first 1/3 of the book and then I had to stop. It was that bad. I so wanted to like it too.
  10. That sounds fun. I live just northwest of Greensboro in Oak Ridge, so Cedarock is not that far away. Please keep me posted, and if you need any help organizing just let me know.
  11. A cool fall Sunday afternoon with nowhere to go so I can spend the day watching football and eating a bowl of potato soup. (If I want soup I can eat, I do have to make it myself :D)
  12. I would do it too. Luckily my family live so far away it got to be too big a hassle to mail presents, so we stopped. My dh's family live close by and I only buy for my mil and my great nephew (who is the same age as my dd). And he gets a gift card. Shopping at the holidays brings out the scrooge in me because it's just tooooooo much. I want to relax and enjoy my family and remember the reason we celebrate. :001_smile:
  13. My 10 year old dd had a febrile seizure when she was around 18 months old. She stopped breathing and we called 911. She started breathing again on her own within a minute. When the paramedics arrived, she wasn't seizing anymore, but they still wanted to take her to the hospital. The ER doctors checked her out to see if she had any infections and gave her tylenol to reduce her fever. By the time we left the hospital a few hours later, she was up and walking around eating a popsicle. We took her to the pediatrician the next day and he said that when fevers spike that fast, it can cause a seizure. They can be really scary, but she was fine and hasn't had one since. I will be praying for your nephew. :grouphug:
  14. 1) What's for breakfast at your house? Cheerio's for me and cinnamon toast for my dc 2) What kind of car do you drive? White minivan that I inherited from my fil 3) What's your weather today? Sunny but cold brrrrrr! 4) Are your toenails painted? If so, what color? Nope, never (ugly toes) 5) Read any good books lately? What was it? A Place Called Wiregrass by Michael Morris. It was last month's book club selection. 6) Is your bed made? Yup, I want my kids to make theirs so I have to make mine. 7) What's for dinner? Wednesday is always a no cook night because of church and errands. So whatever drive-thru my dc can agree on. 8) Name something your dc have done today that made you smile. Given me lots of hugs and kisses. 9) What color is your bathroom rug? Cream 10) Who's your favorite artist? Monet 11) What's your favorite morning beverage? Diet Pepsi 12) Do you have any toys from when you were a child? My very first doll. 13) Do you collect anything? Not enough time or money 14) Are you looking forward to the holidays? (whichever days you celebrate) Not really because we don't live close to my family, so we will be spending the holiday's with my dh's family, again. We are supposed to have Thanksgiving at our house, so there's all the extra cleaning and cooking for people I don't really care to see. Oh well, at least there will be leftovers. 15) What are you wearing today? Tan slacks, tan sleeveless sweater and a light blue button down shirt.
  15. In North Carolina, we have early voting and there have been long lines in some areas. My county has around 10 early voting places. I voted today and only had to wait about 15 minutes. My parents live in Missouri where there is no early voting and they plan on getting to the polls early because in the last presidential election they had to wait 2 hours to vote. Yeah for early voting:hurray:
  16. We built our own house and put ceramic tile in the kitchen and breakfast nook and have bamboo hardwood floors in our family room. I love ceramic tile because it is easy to clean and I don't have to worry about the floors being damaged by chairs, spills, or by things being dropped on them. We used a bamboo t-mold to join the tile and bamboo floors and it looks great. The joint is the entire length of the room and it has a 45 degree angle. I like the different floors because it is a way to visually separate the 2 spaces. Before we chose which floors to use, we went to open houses and model homes to see what flooring they used and if we liked it. I had a hard time deciding until I could "see" it. Good Luck!
  17. My Ipod contains all different types of music. I have certain playlists that are for my ears only.:D Classical, Barry Manilow, Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, AC/DC, Journey, Violent Femmes and anything 80's. My dd(10) has her own mp3 player which has mostly christian music with some Hannah Montana thrown in. When we are in the car, I usually listen to talk radio because the christian radio station does not come in very well. My dc do like to listen to the soundtrack to Wicked in the car. Even my ds whose 8 will say turn it up.
  18. My 10 yr old dd uses a "thumb wrap" pencil grip also. She attended a private classical school until 3rd grade. They told me that a "thumb wrap" pencil grip would cause excessive fatigue, but once a child was past first grade, it would be almost impossible to change. We tried everything to correct her grip but I finally gave up last year. I got tired of reminding her of her pencil grip every 5 minutes. She would even hold the pencil wrong with the special grips on them.
  19. I've had plantar fasciitis off and on for over 10 years. Stretching exercises and good shoes worked the best. I've tried orthotics and cortisone shots which only helped a little. When I shop for shoes, I look for cushioned support and a small heel (to keep the pressure on the ball of my foot and not my heel). Clarks and Birkenstocks are great. There are times when only a cute shoe will work and I will still wear them knowing that the next morning is going to be painful. Good luck with whatever you try!
  20. My dd(10) is struggling with reading comprehension. She knows all of the phonics rules and can sound out almost any word she comes across. But when you ask her questions about what she read she draws a blank. She has a hard time making inferences, synthesizing, predicting what might happen next, and relating what she is reading to other stories she has read or what she has actually experienced. This is our first year of homeschooling and I'm concerned that she will fall behind in other subjects. Most of the recommended reading for 5th grade in WTM is way too advanced for her. Can someone recommend a reading program that could help with all the above. Thanks
