  1. Honey, it sounds like a lymph node. And it sounds like the lymph node is working. I would get it checked, but I wouldn't worry one more minute about it. Hugs. {{{{}}}}
  2. Oooh, that was a bad bad smiley! I might even call it a frowney. :-) And I think Sweden actually does allow home schooling. But I might be wrong. If I am, please don't give me a smiley, 'k? I promise to be good from now on.
  3. Jane, my ds took honors pre-calc with extra topics (to reflect the content in the "A" part of A/B) in 11th, then B/C in 12th. His college offered credit for B/C, but only after he passed Abstract Algebra (I think? Anyway, the college class after Calc III at his school, whatever that is). All the colleges seem so different. Reed, for example, will give credit for either A/B or B/C with a score of 4 or 5, but not both. And then placement is based on an entrance placement test, not the passing of either.
  4. Yay! I looked myself up on the list of active nurses in TN, and there I was. Thanks for all your encouragement through the years of going for this. What a ride! Hugs all around. ETA: Oh, and I'm working nights on the ortho/neuro/trauma floor at the med center, adult special care. Good times. :-) ETA: Again: I've been up for over 30 hours, so I'm off to bed. Forgive me if I don't read these til tomorrow.
  5. A little bit of a veer OT, but only a bit -- has anyone seen the series "Joan of Arcadia"? It explores this idea of God speaking to a young girl, though in a rather different manner than the original story.
  6. Agree. Quick read, good reminders. Interesting viewpoints about some things.
  7. Susie, SERIOUSLY look at Tennessee Tech. We have about a dozen friends who graduated in some sort of engineering and math field who have been very successful after graduation. (Some 20 years later, now.) And of course, you have our very own momof7's son who attends and who is thriving there.
  8. Have you read Colleges that Change Lives by Loren Pope? If not, I urge you to do so! Dd will be looking at Sewannee. The Cumberland Plateau is an amazing place to explore. Furman is beautiful and a solid school and has a lot to offer, not the least the mountains very close by. If it weren't for the geography of the place, I'd recommend he look at Wabash College. Small, strong academics, good scholarships available, very involved faculty and student body. Have you looked at UNC-Asheville? It's known locally as "the Harvard of the South." Not sure how accurate that is, but there you go. Oh, and don't forget to check out Davidson. Both of these schools have fabulous "big backyards."
  9. No, that simply isn't so, not from my perspective, at least. I would take as much exception to that sort of nonsense and loading from a LOGIC book from either perspective. I'm sorry. No. Not even close. And momof7, I've MISSED you!
  10. Well, much as I do not like The Fallacy Detective for very specific and citeable reasons, isn't it some sort of fallacy to discard a whole body of work from a person on one subject because of his position on another? Everyone, I think, has blind spots. I'm sure I must. Perhaps you, too? I quite skeptical about throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
  11. You know, I *thought* I knew how to make rice. And then you went and posted how to actually make it properly, and now I can really make rice! Thank you. Every time I make rice from now on, I'll think of you. :-)
  12. Well, this one actually is probably related, and it's called "allergic rhinitis of pregnancy." :001_smile: I do strange things like put my keys in the freezer (and then not be able to find them for a long time), wear clothes inside-out out in public, and basically just lose my everloving mind.
  13. Oh, honey. I'm sorry you're struggling and hurting right now. Such a hard decision. Given what you've put into it and how close you are, I'd *probably* stick it out for the masters, but that's mostly because I'm very stubborn. And that is NOT the best way to be, usually. You can always say you have additional graduate work in xyz if you don't finish. And it's certainly not a failure, given what you've just said, if you don't finish up. Not in the least, IMO. {{{BT}}}
  14. Sorry, Joanne. You need not be sad on my account My position on public school is not that it is the default position. Not at all. But I stand firmly by my own opinion that in this instance, public school is not the devil and could be a wise choice for now. I appreciate your opinion (well, of course!) and your perspective.
  15. I believe that you are being very wise and taking the long view in this regard, Jessica.
  16. This is a government site. I can't imagine using it to complain about a private entity's business practices. Or am I mistaking its purpose?
  17. The requirement is for a modern language at those schools. One of the distinctions is that Latin often doesn't require a listening or speaking component. (Which is why my dd can do well in it! :-D)
  18. Depends on the college as others have said, but my dd will be using Latin to fulfill her high school and for college admissions. She just won't apply to schools that won't accept it. :-)
  19. There's a long history of exposed women on sailing ships, though. (What are they called? Figureheads? Mastheads?) Wasn't it supposed to assure a calm sea? From the time of the ancient Greeks, or something. Do NYC buses still have scantily clad women pictured on them at times, or am I misremembering this?
  20. Education is much too elitist, Barb, and self-discipline goes contrary to the notion of handing out "stimulus" checks and free "credits" to spend at Wal-mart on really useful plastic crap from China. We can't do either education or self-discipline. It's just not the American way anymore. (Start disclaimer: This post does not apply to any of y'all who are educated or who spend your stimulus and credits on things that you know are necessary for your family, or who don't get a stimulus, or who don't get credits but rather earn every single penny that passes into your hands. Everyone makes their own decisions in life, and so for heaven's sake, if my comments don't apply to you, don't be all offended. They weren't MEANT for you, if they don't apply to you. End of disclaimer.)
