  1. Yea, yea, yea... Be a good example, I know. We'll see how they are doing this afternoon. We probably will get started.
  2. Who says the numbers have to fit in the boxes? Why not just use them as a guide for the columns?
  3. My dd7 was very excited to finish the last 2 pages of her 1st grade math book, but... only if she could start her new one (2nd grade). I thought, sure why not, who cares if I'm not ready, the beginning is review anyway. The problem is that then her little sister wants to start her Kindergarten book. I did not want to do school today! Just a spelling placement test and those last two pages from the math book! I'm only mostly ready to start the year (we are starting on Monday), but I am not really ready. I hate saying no to school though. I told them to let me think about it during quiet time (now). Is it horrible that I am hoping she changes her mind during quiet time?
  4. There are different kinds of abucuses? Seriously, I did no tknow that. We bought a Melissa and Doug abacus last year that we use all the time for math. Manipulatives that can't be lost or made into a mess, already in groups of 10 - you bet! My dd7 uses it for math all the time, but I don't know if it is Chinese or Japanese.:tongue_smilie:
  5. Because I started reading it and can only do it ion small doses, I have a very low opinion of Obama, his intelligence and his experience. But, I feel I should read it so that I can be educated on his views, that doesn't mean I want to or enjoy it.
  6. If CBS works for your family dynamics and areas, it is what you were describing. I do the same passages as my 7yo, obviously different questions. This year we are studying Hebrews, I have an aunt in CA starting with Genesis.
  7. CBS - Community Bible Study - has a homeschool program. THey are non-demoninational and you are not supposed to mention your particular church. It is a bible study that meets once a week. I'm not sure if it would work for you if you are the one doing the majority of school as I think it is more for women then coed (they do have coed groups, so I'm not sure). You go one day a week and have homework for 5 days - it fits well into our school day.
  8. Has anyone got their WWE 2 workbook yet?
  9. No answers, but I want to know. I use Wordpress, but don't know how to do it there either, or even if you can.
  10. My dd7 is like this. If I get up from the table she starts playing with her sister and brother who are at the table coloring or doing puzzles. I have found that I need to sit at the table with her while she does her math, even if it means reading or doing sudoku, so I can remind her to focus. We take breaks after every 3 subjects, so that is when I get things done. She has set goals, these 3 math pages, this piece of copywork, etc. that she has to get done, the sooner she i done the sooner she can play.
  11. We did a little "writing" last year - mostly just copywork - sentences I liked and memory verses. We are starting WWE 2 next week when we start 2nd grade. If they have done any copywork and narrations, they should be fine to start level 2.
  12. I really appreciated being able to read McCain's speech and would like to read Obama's speech side by side to compare them. Does anyone know where I can find the transcript of Obama's speech?
  13. I loved the speech, there were a few times that I got all teary-eyed. I was very excited about the content of the speech. The last week has turned me back into a political junkie, which I haven't been for a while. I'm so excited.
  14. Last year I made a family and friends scrapbook/yearbook in photoshop and published it in Lulu.com. I only used pictures from 2007. I ordered copies for my parents, sisters, aunts and uncles and some friends who were in it as Christmas gifts. I will do another one this year. It is time intensive, and I decided that other than separating the pictures I want to use, there is not much that I can do before October or so. That reminds me, I need to start getting ready. The parents loved it.
  15. I just got mine a couple of days ago. What kind of goals would you suggest for a kindergartner (doesn't read yet) and a 2nd grader who loves to start books (she is not so good at finishing them. It looks like it goes from October to May. I'm excited about it.
  16. I love the voice of experience. I think I will stick with it until it doesn't work anymore and starting with 3rd grade (next year) buy the TM as well as the worktext. Even if I'm not doing it their way, she is learning to add and subtract and all that. She tends to want to do more than listen just yet. Thank you
  17. I would say that if he recognize the sound (even if he has to sound it out everytime), continue on. One thing about OPGTR is you have a 2 review and 1 new that you do before most lessons. As your 2 review, go back to the sounds he has trouble with. That way nothing gets left behind and he is still advancing. I wouldn't expect fluency at all until you've been doing it consistently for at least a year. Fluency will come with practice and no other way. Good Luck!
  18. I'm always in favor of SOTW as a spine. Mary Pope Osborne has a research guide (written for elememtary kids) about the American Revolution. They probably have it at your library. FWIW - America was required to pay taxes to Britain, but had no voice in the British Parliment.
  19. What is CWP? I probably will start getting the TM either for 3rd or 4th. I can't really see her doing anything in 2nd I can't help her with so I only bought the Worktext. It is good to know that the TM are worth it. I usually see the price and think to myself "that costs so much more than the book, is it worth it?" So far we have only done BJU math, someone gave me Saxon K when she was in Kindergarten and I hated it. We actually did very little of it.
  20. My ds3.5 is going to be "doing preschool" this year. We went and got him the Comprehensive Curriculum at Costco for $11 or so. The girls ended up sharing one (the 5yo is finishing the one her big sis started). He wants to do school like his sisters. We'll see how it goes. Mostly I try and tell him puzzles (he loves them and does them great) and coloring are his school, but he sees the girls doing some workbooks and he wants to do that too. All in all, I would make sure they get what they should know (colors, letters, shapes, etc) and not worry about a curriculum unless they really want to *do* school. :D
  21. We are starting FLL2 and WWE2. We did FLL1 last year. I love FLL and love WWE (we haven't actually used WWE yet, so I don't really know how dd7 will do with it). My dd7 las year did handwriting from a manuscript book (dollarstore, walmart, Goodwill, I found them everywhere). This year she will do copywork, from a notebook I have made, for handwriting. WWE is designed to be done with FLL. You might try it with the 6yo. If he is not writing well enough for it yet, wait, or just do the narration days. For level one I think it set up as 4 days/week 2 on narration and 2 on copywork. Level 2 also introduces dictation. We have also done a lot of tracing pages at my house - all the kids like to get out their markers and trace the dotted letters. I make them on kindergarten paper and scan them since I don't really like make pages of dotted words.
  22. We have to do 174 I think here in CO. Last year I didn't have to keep track at all (starts at 7), but we did school usually 5 days/wk and went from the beginning of Sept to the middle of June to be officially done. We were/are still doing some in the summer since I wanted to finish the 1st grade books before starting the 2nd grade ones.
  23. I love Bones. I liked David Boreanez back in his Angel days and wanted to watch the show just for that reason, then I watched it and liked it for its own sake. We do still have small kids so we only watch it on DVD. (No tivo here and we don't do the VCR thing anymore). I love watching shows on DVD, but... that means that any show we like we are always a year behind on. I decided I want to read Kathy Reichs books also, one's waiting for me at the library as we speak.
  24. I would start with what you have and adjust as necesary once she gets started. Better set the bar high and see how well she does, she may just amaze you. They have a way of doing that don't they?
