  1. Is your spaghetti squash ripening, too? You can prick with a few fork holes and bake until tender (sorry, but times depend on size)- then cut in half, scoop out seeds, shred flesh with fork. The way I do it- cut in half, scoop our seeds, steam until tender, shred flesh with fork.
  2. My ds would be interested. He is 11, loves science, reading, and history, loves the outdoors (he is a Boy Scout and camps monthly), likes to draw, likes soccer and baseball (played baseball 4 yrs until 2 yrs ago when we moved and I switched him to soccer) we aren't Catholic, if that matters (I don't think it will, but just in case) we used to live in the country, but are now semi-rural, too. He can do email or snail mail.
  3. :iagree:What she said, except that we finished it. We're going to Wheelock. I have emailed and asked questions also, with no response. They used to have a forum where the authors would answer questions, but that is down and they can't say when it will be back.
  4. I thought they were poorly put together. Each lifepac is just a unit pulled from some other grade's curriculum, so there is no review from lifepac to lifepac. Each is like it's own small curriculum, going on to something new each time. Felt very disjointed. There is the ease of use factor, and it's something educational to do, but as far as a serious curriculum I would use something else.
  5. I'll give it a shot since no one else has seen it yet. ee-ahm ee-oo-way-nis ee-ahm whir
  6. Has anyone else seen this? I'm dumbfounded if this actually works, as I can't get the publishers to respond to my emails and I don't know if I can use Wheelock without a key. Hope this helps someone else, too.
  7. Dd is finishing up R&S English 9/10 book 1 and will do book 2 next year for 10th grade. However, I plan to do only half the exercises and tailor the writing to go with history. My ds is in English 5 and I plan for him to make it at least through 8 (my older ds only made it through 6- it was too much for him, so I'm thinking it may be for younger ds also).
  8. I bought Saxon Teacher cds for Algebra 2 from Rainbow at our bookfair two weeks ago. I've previewed it and it teaches the lesson, goes over every practice problem step by step, every lesson problem step by step, and on a separate cd has all the step by step test solutions. Looks very good to me. Not exciting, but the step by step explanation for solutions is going to prove very beneficial for me.
  9. We have only used it as a supplement. We are half through the second book. I prefer the orderly way that LfC/Latin Alive introduces the declension, conjugations, etc. Most of the Cambridge lesson material is introduced in the reading first, and then formally later in the lesson. We rearranged to do the lesson first and then go back to the reading. The program is mostly reading, which is why it made a fantastic supplement for us. I would definitely use the workbook and spiral bound teacher guide. The story line keeps you and the student interested. The reference section in the back of the book is what we still use to look things up when we have a question. Do get two texts, though, for the teacher to follow. The te has all the translations and answers, as well as teaching tips (although I just used the answers).
  10. I would have loved to join you, but our homeschool convention is in Oklahoma City that day.
  11. 6th grade boy: TOG YR2 Saxon 7/6 R&S English 6 R&S Spelling 6 LfC primer A Kym Wright's Botany Adventure, followed by Signs and Seasons 10th grade girl: Wheelock's Latin for Latin 2 Saxon Algebra 2 TOG YR2 SL Core 530 British Lit Apologia Chemistry R&S English 10 and maybe Classical Writing Aesop & Homer for Older Students they both also play soccer and swim and do Scouts
  12. which item has the answers? tests and quizzes? this sounds interesting...
  13. we use Latin Alive, and for the most part it's good. BUT, the tm is terrible. Lots of exercises don't have any answers, and for a mom who doesn't know Latin, I need it all spelled out for me. Wonder if I could do next year (Latin 2) with Wheelock?
  14. Yes. My kids swim and play soccer, which I consider training them for lifetime fitness. They also both participate in Scouts, which teaches so many skills for the future I can't begin to list them.
  15. western NC is a beautiful place. We lived near Wilmington, which isn't as nice. I had a friend who moved away from CT to NC because of the cost of living being too high up there. don't know about CT, but NC has reasonable hs laws- basically notify, test once a year, keep on file attendance and shot records. Good luck.
  16. well, I found the free stuff on their website, but I'm still open to new (and maybe better) ideas.
  17. I'll be doing Latin for Children A with ds 11 next year. Does anyone know where I can get lesson plans and/or tests for this?
  18. I highly recommend Latin Alive! from Classical Academic Press. We're towards the end of the book and it has been very thorough.
  19. Don't know what core you're thinking of, but core 2 would be great for your kids. I loved SL at that level. Lots of read-aloud time, good books, etc. I did not use their LA. I did use science 2 and enjoyed it, but it jumps around a lot. The Bible study books used in Core 2 I though were a bit trivial (I have a problem with God as a cartoon). I actually used 1&2 combined and we LOVED the books.
  20. it's a possessive pronoun acting as an adjective. answers the question "whose" dead.
  21. This is what my dd is doing this year for 9th grade: 1 cr. ancient history (using TOG YR 1 rhetoric level) 1 cr. BJUP Geometry 1 cr. Latin I (using Latin Alive! supplemented with Cambridge book 2- this is her 3rd year of Latin, but I'm calling it Latin I for hs) 1 cr. PE (she is on swim team and practices year round, competes fall and spring; also soccer fall and spring with games) 1 cr. English (using both Rod and Staff English 8 and 9) 1 cr. biology (using ABeka Biology) 1/2 cr. Intoductory Logic she also did 1/2 cr. art history and 1/2 cr. computer applications last summer extracurricular: Venture crew, pro-chef teen classes
  22. We used to live outside Wilmington, NC (till 1 1/2 yrs ago)- so... I would suggest Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach (or nearby).
  23. have hope, so of those minor scratches can be polished out
