  1. I agree with the first two suggestions. Also, if you are doing it with him, perhaps you could make up some sentences from the words he has already learned. BTW, my dd8 is just finishing GSWL and she really loves it, too. Take care, Suzanne
  2. I'm taking her to a Taste of Home cooking show with dd. Suzanne
  3. If your main interest is looking things up on the Internet, you might want to consider buying a cheap used computer or laptop. We have bought both on Craigslist cheaper than our Kindle. The Kindle is great for reading and storing books, but I think it is too slow and difficult to maneuver online. Take care, Suzanne
  4. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but we used Ambleside Online http://www.amblesideonline.org/ for history. Ambleside has a Christian worldview, but the history readings in the booklist are not necessarily Christian. For 1st grade, they focus more on Europe. We also use the graded Rod and Staff readers, which are chronologic Bible stories written to grade level. I have found these very true to the accounts in the Bible. Books and samples are at this link: http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Rod_and_Staff_Bible_Nurture_and_Reader_Series/ Hope you find something that works for you! Take care, Suzanne
  5. Ambleside Online -- http://www.amblesideonline.org/ Take care, Suzanne
  6. I agree! We use Rod and Staff in conjunction with Ambleside Online for dd8, and it works very well for us. Take care, Suzanne
  7. Has she read Robin Hood (Pyle) yet? That was dd's favorite from AO3 this year. Take care, Suzanne
  8. Rod and Staff. Ambleside Online. Simply Charlotte Mason. Take care, Suzanne
  9. I loved our Kindle for about 3-1/2 months until the screen "cracked." (No, we didn't drop it. We laid it on the dining room table one day. Three hours later I picked it up again, and the screen had a "cracked" appearance.) Amazon quickly sent us a replacement, which "cracked" in 4 days, and another replacement that lasted less than 1 day because it had a formatting problem and some of the buttons didn't work. After that, dh said he didn't want any more replacements. I think I am going to wait until September to buy another ereader for our new school year. I have been looking at these Bebooks -- they look a lot more flexible than either the Kindle or Nook.... http://mybebook.com/store/ Take care, Suzanne
  10. I like to steam them and then mix in butter, salt, pepper and lemon juice (or lemon-pepper seasoning if I have it). I have never tried the olive oil, but it sounds good, too. Take care, Suzanne
  11. I think when silver goes up, it is a bad sign for the dollar. http://www.kitco.com/scripts/hist_charts/yearly_graphs.plx Take care, Suzanne
  12. Just wondering if anyone has experience/recommendation for an ereader that isn't a Kindle or a Nook. I have especially been looking at the Bebook and Bebook Mini. We had bought a Kindle last fall. We have been having problems with the screen, and since it is now outside the 90-day return window for Target (where we bought it), we have to try to exchange it directly through Amazon. If that doesn't work out, I have been wondering if we might be better off with another brand of ereader. Thanks for your help. Suzanne
  13. I don't know about "preachy", but I believe Rod and Staff has a more serious approach than some of the other Christian curricula. Suzanne
  14. I agree with joining the Yahoo group. They are very helpful. Since you have 2 toddlers plus 2 starting Ambleside, you might want to try combining them for the first year to see how it goes and how much time it takes you. You could even choose selections from both Year 1 and 2. When both of you dc are more independent readers, they could branch into separate years. There is a Year 3.5 available for those not ready to start Year 4, as Year 4 does become a lot more difficult. I hope you find what works for you. We have been doing AO since the beginning, currently in Year 3, and we love it! Take care, Suzanne
  15. Not a manual transmission, but a couple of years ago we rented a Chevy Impala that got 38 mpg, and it seemed pretty roomy in the back. We only have 2, so our VW Jetta works fine as long as I am careful packing. Take care, Suzanne
  16. We started in 3rd grade (this year) with GSWL and are using it concurrently with R&S English 3. This has been a great start for dd. The pace in GSWL is just right, we can do the exercises orally, and she can remember it! We are going to try The Great Latin Adventure next year and see how that goes. Take care, Suzanne
  17. I only have 1 dd in school, so I probably had more time than you. I would have dd write out as much as I thought she could handle. We did some orally, and I would write out the rest for her. I think I would usually write about 3/4 page of questions a day, and I would do it while she was doing something else such as reading or copywork. Take care, Suzanne
  18. We use Ambleside Online and have downloaded a lot of the books to our Kindle. Both dd and I use it. Works great! Take care, Suzanne
  19. I did it for 5 weeks a few years ago (stopped early because I was going on vacation). I lost 18 pounds and kept them off for 4 years until I got pregnant. I'd love to do it again, but I just don't have the time right now. Good luck! Suzanne
