  1. :iagree: The hospice caretakers that helped my dad during his last few months were wonderful.
  2. I think it's because stories like this Facebook fuelling divorce, research claims hide out in the back of our brain. I routinely ignore friend requests from men from my past, because ... I just don't care to encourage friendships with the opposite sex. I'm glad my husband isn't on Facebook. {grin} When we first met & for the first few years of our marriage he was in a moderately successful rock band. I've had women tell me to my face that they had the hots for him. Yikes! I trust him ... it's those shameless hussies from his past I don't trust!
  3. We bought it, tried it, hated it, and sold it a few years ago.
  4. I think it depends on if you want to call it K5 or 1st grade. If it is K5, I would wait a year before starting history. If it is 1st grade, I would begin with SOTW 1 with the Activity Guide. I would recommend having it be K5 because of her birthday. I really like to start first grade with my boys reading fluently, handwriting skills down, and a solid year of math under their belt. K5 is a super fun year to homeschool! My oldest two covered: Bible; Phonics with a segue into Reading when we finished the Phonics program; Piano; Math; Handwriting; Geography (very gently with Geography Songs by Audio Memory & a children's atlas); and Science (like Geography, very gently with Rod & Staff "God is Good" series along with Christian Liberty Press Nature Reader 1; nature walks, planting gardens, and Butterfly Garden Kit from Home Training Tools).
  5. We are using Sonlight Science 2 and Sonlight Science 4 this year and each week's experiments line up with what the boys are learning that week. I believe Sonlight redesigned all of the science programs last year. This is our first year of Sonlight Science. We are on week 24 and we LOVE it. Both boys think this is the best year of science *ever*. :-)
  6. It's a store that buys & sells new & used books/cds/dvds/etc. http://www.halfpricebooks.com/
  7. Well, we are doing Year 1 Upper Grammar and Dialectic next year. I printed out both book lists for the year from Bookshelf Central. If you go there, it will give you a grand total of all of the books you need (no need to add it up yourself) if you buy all of the books from them. I went through the list book by book week by week with my teacher's manual. I was able to eliminate a couple of books off the bat and also check off a few of the books we already owned. I don't plan on using every single one of the books, but do plan on using an overwhelming majority. Also, I'm only counting the books that are in the primary resources, not any that are alternative resources. If I bought all of the books I plan on using from Bookshelf Central, my grand total would be $333.83 for Upper Grammar. (That is $62.99 for Unit 1, $121.00 for Unit 2, $56.79 for Unit 3, and $93.05 for Unit 4.) If I bought all of the books I plan on using from Bookshelf Central for Dialectic, my grand total would be $504.58. (That is $134.65 for Unit 1, $143.53 for Unit 2, $74.55 for Unit 3, and $151.85 for Unit 4.) Anyway, my son was begging to go the Half Price Books last week and as I was browsing the shelves, I found several of the books on the list BRAND NEW there!! I was so excited. One of the books was $24.00 at Bookshelf Central, not available at Amazon, and I got it for $6.00! Yippee! So, my point is, it will end up costing us well under the $333.83 for Upper Grammar and $504.58 for Dialectic at this rate. And, we'll have a wonderfully stocked home library. :-)
  8. My boys' favorite two shows are The Electric Company and Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman. Both are on PBS.
  9. My closest friends' ages are within 5 years + or - mine, but we're all around the same stage in life with multiple children under 10.
  10. We said, "Punch Buggy!" "No punchbacks!" Now, my kids want to hit each other and/or me every time they see a VW! We need to have a talk about succumbing to advertising.
  11. For K4, my accelerated son did: Bible: Leading Little Ones to God by Marion Schoolland and The Child’s Story Bible by Catherine F. Vos Phonics: Phonics Pathways & Bob Books Piano: Music for Little Mozarts Books 1 & 2 Math: Saxon 1 Handwriting: Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K For K5, he did: Bible: same as K4 Phonics: Finish Phonics Pathways; when done with that, then Veritas Press: First Favorites Vol. 2 Reading Comprehension Program Piano: Music for Little Mozarts Books 3 & 4 Math: Saxon 2, toward spring we supplemented & zipped through Singapore Primary US ed. 1a & 1b Handwriting: Zaner-Bloser Handwriting 1 Geography: Geography Songs by Audio Memory along with National Geographic Picture Atlas Grammar: First Language Lessons 1 Science: Rod & Staff "God is Good" series along with Christian Liberty Press Nature Readers; nature walks, planting gardens, and Butterfly Garden Kit from Home Training Tools
  12. Click on the tag that says "logic stage history" at the bottom of this thread. It should take you to a bunch of other threads on this subject if no one else joins in. :-) HTH!
  13. My local farmer's market stinks! Last year 90% of the people there seemed to know absolutely nothing about the produce they were selling. And, suspiciously, these same people were all selling the exact same products. Dh and I couldn't figure it out. I asked a lady if her sweet corn was organic and/or non genetically modified and she started yelling at me that she tried it at a party and it was the best corn she ever tasted. I was thinking about trying a CSA that I found at http://www.localharvest.org/csa/ , but am not sure. I haven't ever done that before and am a little nervous about getting a box of vegetables each week that my family might not eat. I'd like to hear about other's experiences, too. :bigear:
  14. :iagree: I'm only six years in, but I have all three copies of TWTM and wouldn't give any of them up willingly. :-)
  15. I don't think he's a doddering old fool. I think he's a powerfully evil fool. My heart has been with the Iranian people since their election day last June. I have great fear for the opposition supporters on Thursday.
  16. Lots of references: http://news.google.com/news?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=iran%20february%2011&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wn
  17. :iagree: We bought one from there and it is AWESOME! We've had it for 3 years now. :-)
  18. You never know what the future holds. Maybe, for the rest of her life, she will be glad she chose to go on the trip.
  19. My 7 and 9 yo both LOVE this book. I pre-read it for them and I thought it was pretty good, too, and I don't usually like children's books. We just read it though and didn't listen to it as an audio-book.
  20. Thanks, Tutor. :-) That's a great point. The purpose it to advertise our company & generate new business.
  21. Thank you very much, Aubrey! That sounds so much better!
