Has anyone here raised tadpoles?
Reflections replied to delaney's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I've used an extra fish tank of some sort and kept a large-ish rock or two in it so that they could climb out on to it. But be warned - they can climb glass and will jump out of the tank if you don't put a lid on it. You can get a small plastic tank with a lid at walmart, target, etc. for little money. Or you can try goodwill or thrift store for a plastic critter holder- just anything with a lid. I've even kept them in a tall vase until they started to really change. And whatever you do, don't put them in with your fish. I did that ONCE. It didn't occur to me that a Beta fish would EAT them. But he did. All 23 of them.:glare: Another thing - they (like our kids) will develop at different rates. I had some that went from tadpole to frog in about 3 weeks and some that took almost 12 weeks. -
Dr Hive . . . exceptional ear pain
Reflections replied to Sweetpeach's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I would think that you need to see an ENT - Ear Nose Throat doctor and not a general practitioner. It's not much advice. Sorry. I hope you feel better soon. :grouphug: -
You are strong. You have a great sense of humor. You WILL get through tomorrow with flying colors. :001_smile: But when you get home, try to treat yourself to something - anything - chocolate, a foot rub, a soak in the bath, a new pair of shoes, take out, a game with the family after dinner instead of the dishes, etc. (or maybe all the above). :grouphug:

WWYD: Sunday school paranoia
Reflections replied to shinyhappypeople's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have not read all the replies but I just had to add - isn't it a standard "RED FLAG" when a group, who is in charge of your children, does not allow you free access to your children at all times? -
OH, WOW. What a stinky day. :grouphug:

History Burnout -- Need Suggestions
Reflections replied to kanagnostos's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
This might be more than you want but.... there was some discussion of this on the high school board - here is the link: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363088&highlight=literature+study+off+history and then of course check out the bottom of the page and see more "like this thread". I've read through it and there is some merit - imo - for taking a year off. Also, I have done the sonlight eastern study over a summer. Just reading the books, not doing anything else but maybe oral narration and I left out all of the missionary books. HTH -

We used Horizons K last year and my ds loved how fast it moved - but he is driven by numbers and math anyway. Some of my friends have Saxon 1 and 2 and I was shocked by the amount of drill they have at that level. My ds would have quit math altogether had I subjected him to that. BUT I really like the Saxon program starting at 5/4 - at that time I think that the drills are appropriate and contrary to some, no that much overkill. Saxon K and Saxon 1 combined move a lot slower than Horizons K - imo. And if you do Horizons K and then move on to Saxon 1, I thik that it will be a much slower review of Horizon K. We did Horizons K and this year we are almost done with Horizons 1 in which he is adding numbers in a column of three and adding three digit numbers by three digit numbers, it has touched on carrying over but not on regrouping and has started simple fraction concepts. Here is what I think: evaluate whether your dc needs the drill (which can be modified - you don't have to do EVERY problem on EVERY sheet) or if she can move at a faster pace and still have mastery.

So, I'm at the deli counter and there are 4 women behind it gabbing away and I am the only customer standing there. Me: Excuse me? Excuse Me? Ummm, hellooooo? I'd like 1/2 pound of turkey. Them: blah blah blah. My husband comes up behind me - dh: Did you get it yet? Them: All four turn around and rush over to help him. This happens all.the.time. We laugh about it. :glare:

Want to see how nuts my neighbor is??
Reflections replied to delaney's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'd be worried. What will she try next? What will she do when she is repeatedly not satisfied with the outcomes of calling the police? She could become so frustrated that she acts desperately - imo. While all of these suggestions made me giggle - they also made me cringe. I wouldn't antagonize a crazy person. I'd quietly consult with a lawyer. You want a written record. Also, what is this camera pointing at? Your bedroom? Your child's bedroom?? Don't ignore your intuition. Protect you and yours. Build a fence. But, it's just my opinion. -
IMHO, it is okay to pick and choose. And since you have very little choice about whether or not you are going to vaccinate with the DTP because France requires it - you could make up your mind about the rest of them later.

frustrated dd wanting to read, help
Reflections replied to joysworld's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Maybe a whole language approach might work? We own Teach Your Child to Read with Children's Books and I have enjoyed it's insights. I also own Hands on Phonics and have used many of the activities. With my ds I have been attacking his reading instruction from all sides and from above trying to meet every need because a singular approach wasn't really working. http://rainbowresource.com/product/Teach+a+Child+to+Read+With+Children%92s+Books+4ED/001678/1ec04b470c742fe19b742073?subject=5&category=816 http://www.amazon.com/Hands-On-Phonics-Activities-Elementary-Children/dp/0130320161/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334287168&sr=8-1 -
You might try Writing Strands - he writes to the student and has a bit of humour. I would start with level 4. My dd really likes the easy going nature of the author.

Texas Homeschool Laws
Reflections replied to JessReplanted's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't mean to offend anyone in PA - but I know someone who moved to PA and I was SHOCKED at the hoops one has to jump through to homeschool there. It seemed overkill. Confining even.- 84 replies

Try this website and see if there is a distribution point close to you. They offer a box of food for $35 that includes meat. There are lots of "menus". http://www.oneharvest.com/index.php?q=find-a-location. "One Harvest Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational, faith based organization that is committed to helping American families. We offer an affordable family meal solution that provides high quality food choices." Also, try to find a bread outlet. At ours, the bread is 1.69 per loaf vs 3.18 at the grocery store. They also have bread that they've pulled because of a day old expiration date, ask them about that. If you have littles under five try to get in to the WIC program. It is easier than assistance/food stamps. They pretty much just supply milk and cheese but it all adds up. Apples are probably the cheapest and best fruit. Oatmeal is super cheap and super yummy with a bit o'sugar and some cinnamon. Ask your grocery store when they double coupons - Kroger doubles everyday up to 50 cents (so, that's a $1 off). Shop the $1 store. HTH.

If we use Hewitt's Conceptual Physics text what edition should I stay away from or conversely which edition is best (I'd rather not pay for this current edition, abeBooks has some great prices on 8th and 9th editions)?? Secondly, what, if any labs should I be prepared to do and are they included in the text or should I use another text – like: we have TOPS Machines and JVC’s Physics for Every Kid and I was kicking around purchasing Physics with TOYS, but didn’t want to throw good money after bad and purchase 10 things when one really good book would have done it. I have been searching on the forums, but I haven't turned up anything yet, maybe I don't search so well.... Thanks! :bigear:
