  2. I have been working on a list of free resources for all subjects on my blog. I am not nearly finished but if there is anything that you could suggest, feel free to reply and I'll add it to my list eventually! I have a huge list and have been wanting to keep it all in one place for my sanity! There are a ton of SOTW plans! Thank you!
  3. I was tooling around this morning, looking for some work to supplement Gensler, and I found this logic text from UCDavis, which is offered free for educational use. Thought I'd share. :D A Formal Logic Primer
  4. I'm sure y'all have already heard of or seen this, but just in case you haven't... http://read.gov/kids/ Check out the "Classic Books Online" midway down the page. The Baby's Own Aesop looks interesting. I like the way the books look like actual books, rather just e-text. I haven't tried to read them yet on my iPad; I wonder if they'll work on it. Oh, this site is also interesting. http://www.loc.gov/families/index.html
  5. I have a 12 year old 6th grader who wants to/has to read literature from India from B.C.E. Although I generally know the stories from the Ramayana, this is not a deep spot in my education to put it mildly, and I'm trying to plan this from out of town. So I'm hoping someone can help. I've seen Kate in Arabia's posts about the Ramayana version by Sanjay Patel and I'm thinking of getting it since it looks wonderful online. Dumb question -- what other works should he read? Are there good translations? He'd love also to read some kids' versions or other adaptations at the same time if there's something a little lighter to go along with it. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
  6. Hi Everyone, I am in the process of planning high school for our daughter. She is in 8th grade now, and we have never used the classical method. I recently got TWTM from our local library, and I must say that the plan outlined for 9th grade discourages me. Our daughter simply is not at that level. If I want to start classical at the 9th grade level, should I just begin with the ancients and follow the logic-stage history framework; i.e. notebook, timeline, mapwork, outlining a spine, adaptations of classics, a few classics when possible, etc.? We're set for math and Latin, and I feel comfortable making a good choice about grammar and composition. However, I trying to decide about history and literature. Which spine would you suggest? I got SWB's The History of the Ancient World from the library, and it looks readable, but I don't know if this should be the spine for outlining or a book to read/read aloud. Also, for those of you using TWTM, what do you think of Jackdaw? They look good, but pricey. Have you found other resources? I saw that Laurie Bluedorn has a $50 ebook of excerpts from ancient primary sources? Has anyone used this? I appreciate advice from those of you experience with classical method and especially who began with older students. Bonita
  7. I found this while looking for handwriting sheets. It's a really well set up site, full of good printables. My favorite aspect would be the sheer ease of it all! I hope this helps someone else too! Have a great day :D
  8. I found about about a couple great resources while listening to a radio show. The first is the Open Courseware Consortium. It links to universities around the world that offer free online courses, lecture notes, lecture videos, etc. MIT has a huge open courseware program (linked here) with over 1900 courses (although most of them don't have complete information). Some of the courses come with assignments and even answer keys. I found a set of five Mandarin Chinese courses that come with a pdf textbook, sound files, software, and assignments. All for free. I am in educational heaven here. Another site is academicearth.org. They have lecture videos from ivy league schools on a variety of subjects, and in some cases you can watch lectures for an entire course. There is a set of 24 lectures on ancient Greek history, and a set of 27 on the Civil War! You can also download them as audio files, perfect for car listening. :auto: I'm thinking there must be some other homeschooling, self-educating parents here that will be as excited about these sites as I am. :D
