  1. Wow! These look similar to the TOG maps I've missed, but even better! What a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
  2. Just wanted to encourage you. My son had absolutely no problem with the math teacher, and I thought she was very sweet. The literature was a big hit, my son really liked all the selections. The science and history were very engaging and interesting to him. Mrs. Vick and Mrs. Moon are amazing!! He even continued and finished the bible class after I told him he didn't have to, so all in all it was a great year. I hope you and your son have the same success. Oh ya, Mrs. Vicks tests are very challenging, in fact it all seemed quite challenging to me. Be prepared for a heavy workload as well. I found myself more often than not allowing my son to skip things here and there because it just seemed like too much for him, or sometimes it was just unnecessary busy work. Anyway, again I hope it all works out for you. I must say I was surprised you went with 7th grade, but I guess you really have a bright young man on your hands.
  3. This is the same for the grammar/writing portion. You print the tests from the mom's minutes.
  4. I talked to I think David from Atelier on the phone this week and he was able to give me a lot more detail of what each level offered. You should call. He did say level 5 was a great year for girls because of the animal focus. I agree they should have more detail on their website.
  5. We'll be using level 5 too! I went ahead and ordered VP-3-D, which is the value pack with everything for the whole year. If you get artprints make sure to select the ones that go with the level you want. GA-M1 are the ones you need for level 5.
  6. I bought this from SL a couple of years ago, because of their endorsement of it. I later found out my pastor's wife was teaching a co-op with it. She said I should really think twice about trying it since I had no latin background. Her and the kids in her co-op had already been through all the levels of Latin Primer and were still very challenged by Latin Road. I still have it though, in brand new condition if anyones interested.
  7. Thanks for your opinions ladies! I guess the reading is a go then, my dd. really liked Mrs. Liston as well in science last year. Thanks for taking the time to share.
  8. Well, maybe OhE will chime in here, because I'm really on the fence about using the BJU reading for my upcoming 4th grader, because of things she has said about it, which I do tend to agree with. I already have the hardrive and all the books, but have been feeling like I should spare my dd from it, not only because of OhE's comments, but because my dd became very burned out by the end of the school year last year. The 3rd. grade reading teacher was her favorite though, so I'm not sure what to do. She'll be reading all the gender specific books from SL core3+4, but I don't have any comp. questions for them, or plans on discussing analysis with her. I am reading Deconstructing Penquins so maybe that will equip me with something. So OhE, if you were me what would you do? I agree that it does seem to be too much of a good thing, but what could I leave out to make it more appropriate? Or should I just skip it all together? I'm sorry for the hijack.
  9. I'm going to try to get through Amer. history in a year using two Veritas Press Cards a week to guide us. Our spines will be Hakim History of US, Kingfisher, and Child's Story of America. Our literature will come from SL Core's 3,4, and 100. We'll do hand's on using Hand's and Hearts history kits, and maybe a western expansion lapbook I purchased from Hand's of a Child. Our mapping we'll come from Scholastic's Interactive 3-D maps. I'm looking forward to a relaxed and fun year of history with no teacher manual, for my 9 and almost 14 yr.old., with a K'er listening in as well.
  10. Bible-Betty Luken's Through the Bible w/Felts and My ABC Bible Versus Math-Right Start A Phonics-Phonics Pathways Handwriting-HWT Read-Alouds-SL P4/5 and many more
  11. I've tried to just do the next thing, and it's just too frustrating having to stop throughout my morning to make copies of things my kids need. Days go a lot smoother when everything needed is ready to go. I like the filing idea, but there's no way I'm printing and gathering everything we need for the year now. I will instead, just plan and print for 9 weeks at a time. I'll have 9 file folders with everything needed paper clipped by day, which will then be put in the corresponding workboxes the night before.
  12. I think you should go back to what works for your ds., at least for the core subjects. We use BJU distance learning for our two olders. It has saved my sanity, because I'm the type that needs to know my kids are at grade level in math and lang. arts. I still like to do history and bible with them, (very relaxed) and also interest led science for my dd.
  13. I've read many reviews and opinions on this board and elsewhere comparing Abeka and BJU's history. The overall consensus seems to be that BJU's not nearly as dry as Abeka. I think it's definitely the way to go if your son is asking for a workbook. There's also all kinds of hands-on suggestions and recipes to go along with what your studying.
  14. BJU's 7th grade history is World Studies, it's the history of people groups and their cultures chronologically from the dark ages to the twentieth century. My son really enjoyed it, but he had Mrs. Moon as his teacher using their distance learning. You could supplement it with books from Sonlight Core's 5,6,and 7. Editing to add books from Core 3+4 could also be fit in.
  15. Looks great, except all the animal habitats are covered in ECC, so I think I would save the WP science to go along with it next year.
  16. I'm only making my reluctant reader ds., who will be 14 in the fall, read the gender specific books in Core 100.
  17. Well I know this is going to sound really crazy, but I woke up a few weeks ago hearing a voice in my head telling me to learn how to garden. I then had the most surreal moment in my life picking out a homesteading book on Amazon. I've now shared and talked with several other woman who've had the same impression and are taking action.
  18. I'm doing year's 5 and 6 next year so I can get through american history in one year. No teacher manual though. I'll just be using two cards a week with most of the spine readings, and then read-alouds from sonlight core 3+4. I think you'd definitely have to be flexible, and just pick and choose stuff, because the teacher manual has alot of activities and projects that correspond to the literature and the history. The Bible curriculum does as well.
  19. I added Apologia's Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day with no problem at all.
  20. My two olders we'll be using BJU hardrive for everything except bible and history. For those we're using Veritas Press Cards to guide us, along with living books, Hands and Hearts history kits, and Hands of a Child lapbooks for some hands on fun. If your using Abeka for all the core subjects I think you should consider a literature approach for at least history and maybe science as well, all though I don't think you can go wrong with BJU in the science arena. But, my ds really enjoyed Sonlight Science 5 in 6th grade, just something you may consider, or maybe even Noeo Science to spice things up a bit. I know it's crazy with all the options we have to figure all of this out, I hope I didn't confuse you more.
  21. What Jesus accomplished on the cross is way bigger than the pride I think we all struggle with from time to time. Nothing we do or don't do can give us favor with God. It was finished on the cross. We are all just filthy sinners who daily need to remember the power of the gospel, fixing our eyes on Jesus instead of our works. And always repenting as well, but then moving forward knowing we're forgiven because of Christ's sacrifice. Romans 3:23-25 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
  22. We used BJU distance learning this past year. My dd. became very burned out by spring time and wants nothing to with BJU next year. My son really enjoyed the seventh grade courses and decided he'd be fine using the eighth grade next year for everything except bible and history which we'll all do together. BJU is the most teacher intensive textbook curriculum out there. A lot of info needed by the student comes from the teacher manuals. There's also lot's of hands on suggestions in almost every subject with instructions and lists of materials needed.
  23. You should check out Noeo Science. You don't have to worry about any young earth teaching.
  24. We'll be moving away from BJU Distance Learning except for Math. A teacher on a screen will still teach writing and grammar as well. They’ll both use IEW and Cozy Grammar. We’ll all be back together for history and Bible using VP cards and spines, no teacher manual though. I want it to be relaxed with lots of hands on provided by Hands and Hearts history kits, and Hand’s of a Child lapbooks. Both will be doing Chemistry next year using two levels of Noeo Chem. I just wasn’t going to be able to handle all the young earth teaching in BJU. So big changes for us again, plus an official kindergartner who will need more of the 3R’s, but very relaxed though.
