  1. I would not reject that at this point. Ha. His withholding was dramatically wrong, and we just paid about $10k in taxes. He'd forgotten to fix it. Twice. We had the necessary argument, and got our stuff together. The taxes are filed, and he will be making the necessary adjustments and calls tomorrow to fix his withholding so it isn't so scary next year. What really bugged me was that he was not engaged. He used phrases like "pop in the numbers" to describe what "we" were doing.... there's an issue with "we" doing work that's actually accomplished by me. He napped while i freaked out over TurboTax. We're working on that. I'm not conflict averse, and since we intend to stay together for the long haul, I'm going to address that until we fix it. It's not entirely his fault; transitioning from the military to retirement plus a government job has been financially complicated. Now I'm drinking wine and trying to reduce my blood pressure.
  2. I just hate filing the taxes! I do it every year. I use software. DH nods and approves, but he doesn't help or make it easier...in fact, he's been forgetting to do things during the year which make it much more stressful now, and expensive. He assumes I'll take care of it, because I have always done so. I don't feel like I know what I'm doing. I feel sick. If you have someone else do them, how expensive is it? I do all the things to save money. I'm more than frugal. But I Hate. This. Task.
  3. I just googled the marriage trend that thread mentioned. (Not gonna type it out.) I'm sure my algorithm will be trashed now!
  4. Hey now, my crockpot and dishwasher need recognition, too. 😁
  5. I'm going to look that up!!
  6. It may be part of a series!
  7. Is this it? https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/352270
  8. I know... pi day was invented by big math to make more dough. Haha! I'll see myself out.
  9. Prepare your menus accordingly. 😁
  10. I'd rather not psycho analyze anyone on the basis of her vocal range! When we lived in Europe, I was sometimes surprised by women with significantly lower vocal ranges than I was used to expecting, and I have an unverified theory that language may shape vocal chord formation. However, I do personally know more than one woman who deliberately shaped her own speech around the phrase, "gentle and quiet." One of them, but not all, were in the Gothard crowd. All were heavily fundamentalist Christians. All tried to train their daughters, and me.
  11. I'm so thankful for this board. I was homeschooled back in the early days, so my mom home-cooked a lot of our stuff, but there weren't many options then. Now there are so many that it's overwhelming. This group plus experience have given me some confidence that I can decide what is needed, gather resources, and create a tailored program. It's my default now.
  12. Yes, that is quite valid. The Schaums book would cover several college courses, and does not align with ap. It's solid physics, though, so I went through and chose what we need for this year. Hey, you might see if the college board classroom has resources! Their physics 1 stuff includes a pretty fantastic collection of worksheets we're also using, to practice doing the answers the AP way. Their statistics course has nothing comparable, which is a bummer. The videos are SO boring, we aren't using them. You might have to register a course with the AP website to get in and see, but that's not too hard.
  13. What really gets me ranting is when they grab a package online and then conclude a few months later that they're failing. I try to help, but I'm not sure it lands.
  14. Some do, some don't. I am frequently agitated about the lack of knowledge among the new homeschoolers on Facebook, especially the ones that yank their kids out if school in the middle of the year. They are truly freaking out. They haven't done years of research and reading. They need a plan NOW and boy, those are for sale online!
  15. Whoa. Not cool. I was just listening to a podcast about the kids' applesauce lead issue.
  16. But... I'm going to make banana bread! Probably tomorrow.
  17. I'm not sure this will be your answer, but we're really pleased with a Schaums workbook on physics as a rigorous supplement this year. I like the way there are problems with the answers worked out, plus more with just the questions and answers. The problems are well written and clearly explained. We'll be using them again. I bet their calculus book would be good as a supplement.
  18. Have you shown your leap-year babies The Pirates of Penzance?
  19. Our neighbors are Muslims. Their dad/grandpa, a very sweet man, passed away last week and we've been invited to a Dua-e-Maghfirah at their home this weekend. What should we expect? How should we dress? What should we bring? Google is not helping me at all! It only defines this as a prayer, but this invitation looks like a memorial gathering. Thanks!!
  20. Holy crap. Maybe I'll replace our carbon monoxide detector just for kicks. We've got two that came with the house, the wall plug-in kind. How scary! So glad you're ok.
  21. That's what I do for 4th-8th. We're in the medieval era now. We use this book as a spine. History: From the Dawn of Civilization to the Present Day (DK Definitive Visual Encyclopedias) https://a.co/d/bJR2giy I combine that book with the people list and primary sources list from TWTM, sync them up chronologically, and go nuts on the library catalog. We read, watch documentaries, and field trip using those two as an outline.
  22. Both kids loved Miquon to start. DD16 used all six Miquon books from age 4 to age 7. Then we used Singapore Standards Ed for a few years, until I discovered Beast Academy through these forums. She ended to switching to BA and going on with AOPS textbooks. It has been a perfect fit for her. We have not tried their online stuff. DS12 is precisely 4 years younger, so he saw her using Beast Academy. He wrestled his way through 4 Miquon books and then insisted on getting into BA. The time worked out for him to start their 2nd grade stuff. He has also moved into AOPS and is doing well with it. Both my kids cried when they ran out of Beast. I can't recommend it enough, if your kid likes interesting math. It's very challenging, but we like that here.
  23. I know why mine can't... it's not regular! I can tune out sawing logs, but gurgling, snorting, and loud snarfing without rhythm is not something I can sleep through!
