  1. Mine is up. It's a couple of pics of a tree that went through my mom's house. The weather has been crazy in California today!
  2. I have been ordering from Boden for the past three years. I have never had to pay an import fee.
  3. My older son will play with Magnetix more, and my younger son plays with Zoobs more. I personally like Zoobs better, but my older son finds them too young for him.
  4. I just started using Cozy Punctuation with my son, and he is enjoying it. It was recommended to me by someone who used it with her daughter with great success. I can't say much about it yet as we have only finished lesson one, but I have high hopes for it.
  5. I agree that the student book is all you need. I did order the monkey cards though, and my son loves them. The cards are fun, and they provide an easy way to review words and phrases.
  6. :iagree:This was one of my favorite movies when I was younger. Some others I love: High Society Teacher's Pet Don't Eat the Daisies His Girl Friday Mildred Pierce A Summer Place The Long Long Trailer
  7. I am working on my credential/masters right now. I start my student teaching in two weeks, and my mom will be homeschooling my kids for the next four months. Once I get my credential, I am hoping to get hired by one of the many charter schools that are for homeschoolers. With these schools I know many moms who work full time and homeschool their kids. Much of the work is done from home, except for a few days a month when you need to have face-to-face meetings with the parents. That may be something for you to consider if your state has charter schools. If you will be actually teaching in a classroom, I think you may still be able to homeschool, but you will have to learn to balance everything. I just read a great book on teaching (can’t think of the name right now), and it said if you want to be an amazing teacher expect the job to take nearly all of your time. If you have a family, you will not be able to be an amazing teacher, but you can be a good solid teacher. This type of teacher works hard while at school and puts in some overtime after school, but that is it. This type of teacher does not allow the work to take away from their personal time, and she learns how to balance everything.
  8. Here is mine. I have never posted a weekly update, but I thought I would give it a try this week. :001_smile:
  9. My son has selective mutism which is caused by anxiety. He isn’t exactly shy, but he will not talk in most social situations, and he gets stomach aches a lot. Your daughter sounds like she is having anxiety issues too. I would take a few steps back for a while and work on teaching her how to deal with this anxiety (with the help of a professional if you need it) and how to voice her concerns when she is feeling this way. Then I would put her back in class and use several of the techniques that help her, so she is able to control her anxiety better. She really needs you to be there for her and help her deal with this, and she needs to learn ways to control her anxiety. That way it won’t end up controlling her life.
  10. I may be wrong about this, but I believe all graduate students are considered independent. I remember reading that when I recently filled out all my financial aid forms for grad school.
  11. :iagree:We are using MPH5/6, and it is wonderful. I highly recommend it!
  12. My post is up. It is a cat that my daughter crocheted. Happy Wordless Wednesday!
  13. These are two of my son's favorite series right now. He is listening to the Mysterious Benedict Society (all 3 of them) on CD, and he loves to read The Sisters Grimm. He absolutely loves the character of Puck and wishes he could be just like him. He also just read Odd and the Frost Giants and really seemed to enjoy that.
  14. I know there are examples of schools doing better now with NCLB, but I still find fault with it though. I think the problem is the content and the scope. There is so much that needs to be covered in the areas of language arts and math that everything else is falling to the side. There is no longer a need to teach history, science, or art. Yes there are standards to be met in these areas, but it isn’t being stressed, and it is not on the tests in the early grades. In addition there is so much that needs to be covered in math and language arts that teachers cover one concept and then move quickly to the next. Children learn, but often forget over the long term. Then you have the teacher stress, and this is a real factor that cannot be overlooked. Teacher creativity has been dropped because there is no room for it. You have your standards you have to meet, you have the curriculum you must use, you have the test hanging over you…it is stressful. What is the alternative? I don’t know, but I think we need to look at other nations in the world to get some ideas. Yes our schools are doing better than before, but are they great now? The answer is no, and I think we need to ask ourselves why.
  15. Rear Window, The 400 Blows, The Searchers, M, The Manchurian Candidate, Giant, Modern Times, Beauty and the Beast (the French version and the animated one), Vertigo, The Big Sleep, Battleship Potemkin, The Bicycle Thief, and 8 1/2. There are many more, but I would have to say The 400 Blows had the biggest impact on me. I saw it in my first year of college, and it moved me so much that I went on to major in film. I also named my first son Truffaut.
  16. I am currently working on my teaching credential, and I can tell you it is talked about in every class, and most of my teachers think it has done much more harm than good. I have to agree.
  17. Mayo is a great hospital, and I would highly recommend it. Many members of my family have been there, including my father. They all felt that it was a positive experience, and based on all I've heard about it, I wouldn't hesitate to bring my child there.
  18. You will be fine, but if you are worried you could always fly into Orange County Airport. The drive to Disneyland is only about twenty minutes, and there are great beaches around here.
  19. :iagree:We stayed in Playa for a month two years ago. We loved it. The beaches are great, but they are even better the farther down you go. I loved the whole area, very laid back and beautiful.
  20. I just started Latin for Children with my 10 year old twins. They love it and do not find it too young. It does have some goofy elements though (I'm thinking of the segment How the West was Unus), but they love this goofiness, and it makes them quite excited about watching the lessons.
  21. Hits - Plasma Cars! All three of my kids got one as a gift from my dad, and they love them. They have been on them everyday since Christmas. I wasn't sure if they would work or not, and I was very skeptical about whether my twins would ride them, but I was proven wrong. :)
  22. Me too! Snape is my favorite character in the Harry Potter books. I only wished he had lived.
