  1. Mother Earth News Mary Jane's Farm (I live in a suburb but have lofty dreams of moving to the country and living a sustainable lifestyle).. I'd LIKE to subscribe to National Geographic if I can find a good deal. My 6 yo is currently into astronomy - so I think we'll be subscribing to Sky News magazine soon. (Canadian astronomy mag). I'd also like to purchase a subscription to Ask magazine (science for kids)...
  2. :iagree: I'm sorry for your scare - that must have momentarily disconcerting.... but mystified as to why you don't feel sympathetic for your cousins loss instead of anger.
  3. I loved this article.... but surely I wasn't the ONLY one who had a moment of panic when the article closed off by suggesting that SWB would be moving on from the homeschooling realm? Including writing? I could NOT imagine homeschooling without her works.... lets hope she gets very tired of watching zinnia's grow and continues writing.... :)
  4. Thank you! Good idea.... I'll have to look over my bookcase for some inspiration.... :)
  5. bumping... I serious am the worst at brainstorming names....I'm praying that there's someone out there who loves this kind of thing...:D
  6. I will be opening up a small before/after school daycare in the new year. (only 4 children) I want to focus on a classical education theme... but to be honest, I don't want to 'call" it as such because I don't think its a term that's well known with my prospective clientèle. (My clients will be people who are just looking for before and after school care in a home-y setting and will think its a bonus to have quality programming but won't be seeking that out as a first priority.) But also because I don't have a teaching degree and don't want to sound pretentious in any way; :tongue_smilie: But we'll be focusing on GREAT literature - children's versions of Homer, Shakespeare, we'll do Story of the World and corresponding activities, we'll have a day of the week where we focus on science, etc, etc. I have some cool ideas and plans.... what I DON'T have is a great name... :) Something that is homespun but slightly literary??? Does that make sense?? What are your ideas?? Thanks in advance!
  7. :bigear: My super-busy 6 yo also loves mazes... they are calming for him.... I'm having difficulty finding maze books that are challenging enough for him though....
  8. Wow!! I love hearing stories like this!! Congrats to you both!!
  9. Maybe I'm over-emotional tonight, but reading this has me STUNNED and sooooo sad..... schools really believe they have the right to control the most basic of bodily needs?? How will teens ever be able to step up and be responsible adults when treated worse than animals are?? Soo stunned......
  10. :grouphug::grouphug: Go for the blood work... ask for a copy for your own records.. and then bring your blood work results to a naturopath for a more in-depth discussion and action plan.. I always expect the same dismissive attitude from main-stream medical doctors - many of them only know to subscribe meds or shuffle you on to a specialist... I ONLY go to them for diagnostic testing or for prescriptions or to get referred to a specialist... :grouphug:
  11. Definitely Goodreads!! And the app has a barcode reader, so that when you see a book in the bookstore, you can just scan and add it to your To Read "shelf"... You could create as many shelfs/categories as you want in Goodreads to have them all organized...
  12. I'd be creeped out.. especially if all of the people who MIGHT have sent it, actually DIDN'T...
  13. awe.... hugs for those kids indeed!!! And yet.... I'd never in a million years visit a dentist who did not allow me to be with my young son during his visits....
  14. there are a couple of books called The Christmas Quilt - which one did you enjoy?
  15. Love this! It perfectly explains why my blend of directed education stimulates creativity for my son's personal projects... I've always had a hard time explaining why my blend of classical education and unschooling works for us... this explained it perfectly... :)
  16. With that latest Facebook fiasco (claiming private messages being shown on timelines were in fact just posts? Ya, um NO!).... I deleted my private Facebook account... created a new one just to maintain my business Facebook page and am not "friending" a soul...
  17. I'm looking for a cute printable where my son can color a section based on how many PAGES he's read (as opposed to books).... I'm envisioning something like a thermometer, or train tracks (where each track could be colored per every 10 pages read).... Basically something that he doesn't have to necessarily record the title of the book... but just color a section that would be worth X number of pages... KWIM?? I can't seem to find anything online!!
  18. How cool! How did you learn watercolors? And do you sell them through Etsy? To answer the original poster's question: I'm currently taking Greek and Roman Mythology through Coursera (LOVING it!!)... i'm also working my way through The Well Educated Mind. And of course following up on rabbit trails, as my curiousity is aroused... :)
  19. totally doable if you school year round or almost year round... or you can take advantage of pockets of time on the other 4 days of the week to get some work done.... that's what we do....
