  1. I am certainly thinking month to month....person could leave any time and I would pro rate rental share.....or I could request to move and give 30 days notice...and prorate from there. I don't want to be locked into long term if there are issues
  2. Has anyone taken in a teen/young adult in need? This is not the same one that needs rehab, but another situation that found me today (ok, I have been involved for over a year now). Young adult has special needs (intellectual disability) but is their own guardian, parents agree with move....they agreed before I even heard about this idea ??? What safeguards would I need to put in place? Right now this person attends school full time and has limited financial resources but has applied for SSI (disability). Trying to think through the pros and cons of this. The school staff had already approached me to consider this as well. What happens if it doesn't work out? I don't want to get into a legal situation where person moves in and if it doesn't work out, I am stuck legally. This is the first I have heard of her formally wanting to move in and I was just asked if when the mom comes in a few minutes if we can discuss this😟 I don't even know if they have insurance (like Medicaid or through a parent) . Open to any and all ideas.
  3. Right now I am treading carefully......... Young lady has now asked to move in with me and be my daughter's roommate. Lots to consider.....but no matter what I want her to have shoes that fit right.
  4. Thanks for the help. I wish these sites, esp. Amazon, made it easier to put in a size and width and then ONLY the shoes available in those sizes/widths popped up. If I do this, I will take her to a local store to get measured. I might even check to see if the New Balance store about 45 minutes from me carries the extra wides, etc. The problem I personally had with new balance was that the padding around the heel was more of a V shape and more narrow in the back....but she might not have that issue. I might also be on the hunt to help find cute, stylish, but durable, clothes in a 24/26 petite (4'11). While I am no fashion plate at all, these bigger girls deserve to have clothes and shoes that fit and are stylish.
  5. I want to help this young lady...and part of it is self motivated. My DD wants her to come along in vacation with us this summer but without proper, well fitting, supportive shoes she won't be able to handle even minimal walking, let along any hiking or trails.
  6. Here is the link to ones I found Orthofeet Best Plantar Fasciitis Shoes. Proven Foot and Heel Pain Relief. Extended Widths. Orthopedic, Diabetic, Bunions Women's Sneakers, Coral Turquoise https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N59VZ2J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IFOuEb26NR0WD
  7. I found these These shoes Any experience with this brand? They look kinda cute for a young lady.
  8. My daughter's friend is in need of new shoes. She has very wide and fat feet (tall/thick) . She is also quite stout so we need a good, supportive shoe. Any ideas on brands/styles to look at or chain stores that carry quality shoes in extra wide? A wide/extra wide men's shoes might work if they have some nice color to them. We are likely looking at a 10 4e in women's that has extra depth too. Due to complex situations I might be funding these so reasonable price but durable and cute for a young lady would be great. I just keep coming up with old lady orthopedic shoes and I want her to have cute, comfortable shoes that will make walking easier for her.
  9. My house will be sinking under the stuff my DD is buying and collecting. Slow and steady....one pen cap and piece of paper at a time.
  10. This is a great way to clean up the community, share unneeded things and recycle as much as possible. We had that in my old community but now that I am closer to town they don't do that. Great idea though.
  11. Kbutton....all good points. So much is individual.
  12. Believe me, when we lived at out old house on a busier road, it was amazing what went. Sometimes my kids would bring things down to the end of the long drive and by the time they came up to the house and brought the next load down, much of the first stuff was gone. This house I list anything usable (but too big to take to Goodwill) on FB for free and it goes. I just live on a private cul de sac now with 5 houses so no traffic This is stuff like packaging, broken pieces of plastic, dead ink pens, markers that won't write, dried up white out, shoes with holes in them, and on and on. All stuff that needs to go, just weird seeing the bags full up.
  13. I am in the process..,again, still, never ending....of downsizing, de-junking, etc. I kinda feel bad though about how much I am adding to a landfill. We recycle what we can, donate the good, usable stuff, etc but there is still a lot of broken, old, yucky, random stuff that just needs to be gone out of my house. I am trying to reduce what is coming INTO the house but right now so much needs to leave.
  14. I have waterproof mattress covers (the nice soft cloth kind) on EVERY mattress in this house as the covers are $15-20 and washable but my mattresses are $$$$ and not washable. I personally have a full set of sheets on my bed. My kids opt for just the fitted sheet some/most of the time with a comforter. I don't fret about the top sheet thing but I am a stickler on the mattress pad (waterproof) and fitted sheet.
  15. I have done that too. Also, you might want to check out healthcare.gov and see what the rates would be for you. You can apply ANY time there is a life change...and losing employment counts. You might qualify as you income is likely to be much lower during layoff/unemployment. Also, depending on your state, the kids might be covered by a state health plan for kids. In Michigan it is Healthy Kids. Similar to Medicaid, very small premium payment and covers almost everything. Income limits are pretty generous. Then when your dh is employed again you can drop these when your new insurance starts...and your income increases
  16. Yep. Happens with my sister's kids all the time.
  17. Exactly. Or an out of town wedding, etc. I honestly hope to use one my personal days for heading north this spring and hiking with a friend. Her schedule doesn't allow for weekend hikes so I will take a Monday to go. Since it will be in May though I will know that I do didn't need to use those days for something else earlier in the school year. School schedules are great for extra days off but they are NOT flexible at all. Almost never can you take the day off before spring break or the day after memorial day off, etc. I get paid 20 pays....2 per month...for the year. That means I need to budget well so I have money in the summer. Also some pays are only 3-4 days and others are 16-17 days just depending on how the holidays falls
  18. Likely the 2 days are 2 personal days in addition to your sick days and days that are not scheduled.
  19. I spent 20 years as a foster parent. There is a huge need for foster parents, people to support the foster parents but also a huge need for people to help prevent the need for foster care. One or more families that can invest in the lives of an at risk family (parents and children) can make a huge difference. Lower cost car repair, emergency child care for a sick child, someone to help navigate social services, involving them in family activities, etc can go a long way to preservation ng family stability for lower income and single parents.
  20. The police idea might be more to get a paper trail and try to get her dh some help if this is a mental health crisis. If he is normally a nice, loving, husband when stable/on meds then that is different than an abusive husband that continues to get worse. Atlanta should have some mental health hospitals to get him some help. Do they have any mutual friends where a few guys that he respects go to him and try to get him to go in for an evaluation?
  21. I have a credit union account with a regular savings, a Max checking (3% interest up to $15,000), a money market (limit of 6 withdrawals a month) and the. Likely 8-10 other savings accounts. I can move money from one to another online in an instant. I have one account fit gifts, clothing, vacations, etc. Then there is an account for car repairs, tags, etc. Another account for property and any other taxes. Then I have a sub account for each kids that I keep some money in to spend on them. I have an account for major home repairs....furnace, AC, roof, etc. Then I have 3 different CDs that are paying decent interest. I keep my emergency fund money in that MAX checking as I can access it instantly but also earn good interest in it. My monthly, general spending money goes in there too....but I mentally know that x amount is the emergency fund and never touch that portion. It sounds more complicated than it is. I also have it set up to auto transfer from the max checking each month certain amounts to each sub find/account.
  22. I love your visit all the state parks idea. A few years ago I took my kids and we visited all 38 county parks in our county. That was fun and free. We biked, skied, sledded, walked, hiked, swam, kayaked, and went horseback riding at those parks. This year I have a list of all 70 local parks in our town/township. Should be doable as we can walk/bike to many of them and easy to hit 3-4 in a short span. Some are just where roads dead end into the water or 2-3 city lots set aside as a green space.
  23. First if all do you have a decent emergency fund? If not, I would out all/most of it there. Next would be towards credit card debt if you have any. Then if those are covered, I might do $2000 into a Roth IRA if that isn't maxed out. And take the $1000 for family vacation, etc or $500 for dh to just do what he wants, something special for him
  24. I think this dull, gray weather here in West Michigan is getting to me. I am getting the travel bug. I have a spring break trip to visit family in Georgia planned. We will also stop in TN, and KY for some hiking and sightseeing. Then we have a family trip planned for up north early summer. Good old Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island....and hopefully hiking in the UP and on the way home. Then I am dreaming a short long weekend type trip to Las Vegas for next January or Feb. No interest in gambling or drinking or shows that cost money. The hiking and natural areas around there are really appealing....esp if the temps are in the 50s/60s. Then next summer my dd wants to go visit "the small states" for her graduation from her special education program. The goal for her is to visit Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut during our trip. I know we will barely touch on things in each state but for her, the goal is to visit them and highlight them on her map of places she has been. If she visits a small local museum in each state and visits a local park/nature center, etc. she will love it. I just wish travel wasn't so expensive. I would be doing a whole lot more of it.
  25. I agree you need a major plan. When my daughter tripped and fell and hurt her head on the edge of the kitchen cabinets I grabbed a clean rag, pressed it to her head and in the same fluid motion reached into the med cabinet, got out 2 Ativan and popped them into her. I knew we would need that medication support for whatever was coming. I rarely (like 2-3 pills a year) use it but when it is needed, it is needed. By the time we got to ER for stitches (as urgent care wouldn't use versed and I knew we needed that) the Ativan was well on board and that along with the versed got us through stitches......along with getting a different ER doc to do them and numbing it super well. Please at least call your doctor but I really think a trip to ER is in order.
