  1. My ds will be going into 7th next year. He has had very little formal grammar. He did Easy Grammar in 4th grade and about 2/3 of Winston Grammar Basic last year in 5th grade. This year we did not do a grammar program, just IEW writing. I feel like he needs more work with grammar, but especially mechanics and usage. Would BJU English be good for this? What grade level could we jump in to?
  2. We like Truthquest's American History for Young Students Guides.
  3. Thanks. I knew about the Calvert workbook, but I think it might be too advanced for my ds. He'll be going into the third grade, but he's dyslexic and struggles with reading. He's very creative and enjoys crafts, so I thought lapbooking might be something he'd enjoy. It'd also be nice to have coloring pages for my almost 5yo to do too. I'm not sure if she'll listen to CHOW, but at least it would keep her occupied. She LOVES to color. Just thought of something........ We'll be doing SL 1+2, so maybe someone on the Sonlight board has put something together for lapbooks. I'll let you know if I find anything. :-)
  4. Our subscription just ran out! I'm so bummed that we don't really have the funds right now for me to renew. I'm hoping we can pick it back up in the fall.
  5. Does anyone know of any lapbooking or notebooking resources that correspond with A Child's History of the World? I know I could piece together my own from various sources, but I was hoping there was something already out there that lines up with the chapters.
  6. My 8yo ds is mildly dyslexic. He is coming along (slow but sure) in reading, thanks to vision therapy, but needs lots of work on spelling. Which of these two programs do you think would help him the most? Thanks!
  7. 100 Easy Lessons didn't work for my very visual ds. The pages were too cluttered and distracting. He used The Reading Lesson with great success.
  8. I did FLL for my oldest two, but my current 2nd grader hasn't had any grammar yet. He's a struggling reader due to dyslexia and visual tracking issues, but I don't think I would have done any formal grammar with him anyway. I like to focus on a firm foundation in reading and phonics in 1st grade, add spelling in 2nd grade, and add grammar in 3rd grade. This is my plan for my next child as well.
  9. You could probably start in book 2, but I agree with the pp that book 1 is a good place to start. The review could be helpful.
  10. I sort of have the opposite problem. My 4yo dd is on lesson 70 of 100 Easy Lessons. She's also working through Explode the Code book 1. She's doing so well that I'd like to stop 100 EL and just have her read Bob books, Dr. Seuss and other easy readers. However, whenever I suggest to her that we skip our "reading lesson" and just read a book instead, she balks. She would rather do 100 EL! It drives me crazy because I'm getting sick of 100 EL. I've used it with 3 of my 4 dc now. I'm ready (and I think she is too, ability-wise) for her to take off with real books. I think part of the issue is that she gets to put a sticker on each page of 100 EL when she's read it. She loves that, and now she has these really cool new princess stickers. She's REALLY into princesses! Maybe when the princess stickers run out we can move to real books.
  11. I think the Robinson Curriculum Yahoo group comes close to what you are looking for. Many on the group don't own or use the RC cds, just implement the method, tweaking for their family. It might be worth checking out.
  12. Subject to change, but for now the plan is.... MATH MUS Pre-Algebra SCIENCE Apologia General Science HISTORY Notgrass America the Beautiful LITERATURE Notgrass recommendations w/ some Progeny Press Guides along with some Ambleside and Sonlight selections WRITING IEW POETRY IEW SPELLING (Dd's weakness) Apples GRAMMAR ? 13. :glare: Still waiting for mine.
  14. Wonderful! And I just found out HOD will be at our convention in May, so I'll get to take a better look and make the final decision then. Thanks!
  15. Michelle, Is your dd able to do it independently? I am considering HOD for my oldest two (7th and 8th in the fall), but need them to be as independent as possible. My 8yo is dyslexic and requiring a lot of my time. Also, my 4yo begs to do school each day. Just coloring pages is not enough for her. She brings me the 100 Easy Lessons book every day and wants to do writing and math as well. I can't make up my mind between HOD or Notgrass' America the Beautiful.
  16. How important is it to follow the diet when doing P90X? Dh and I are about to start this, but I find the diet part confusing and hard to follow. Can we modify by just staying within a certain calorie range and keeping proteins high and carbs and fats low?
  17. That's what my 7th grader did this year. We've never really done a formal science before so I thought the science in ECC was fine. I'm very relaxed with science until 8th grade when we plan to do Apologia General. I've just had my dc read a couple of the Elementary Apologia books and all the Christian Liberty Press Science Readers. My dd LOVED the Properties of Ecosystems book from ECC, and this is a girl who's never liked science anyway. Now I will add that we fizzled out on ECC a little more than halfway through it this year. However, it wasn't the program's fault. I just had a lot of health and learning disability issues going on with my 8yo, so couldn't spend the time doing ECC with my older two. I tried to have them do it independently, which worked for a few weeks, but it didn't seem like they were getting as much out of the program that way. We've since dropped it, except to play the geography games now and then. HTH!
