  1. If this is only the second time that she has done this and she hadn't had a chance to cash your Sept check, I would give her the benefit of doubt and assume that she forgot your request to not cash two checks at the same time. She probably forgot or didn't have the chance to run to the bank to cash your Sept check, so when she got your Oct check, she just took them both with her. Has she ever had two checks to cash at the same time again after you asked her not to do that?
  2. Dh liked his Toyota Corolla best. I hated that car - it was dirty and falling apart. Before that, he had a Honda Civic that he liked (Corolla got better gas mileage) and thought he'd have until it died, but it was totaled (not his fault).
  3. I'm interested! I can't figure out how to pm you though.
  4. My ds got a concussion from soccer by going to head a ball at the same time another player was and they bumped heads instead of the ball.
  5. Oh no! I haven't followed the news since this afternoon, are there still people in lock-down? Or, is it over completely?
  6. Just thought I'd share that I found alphabet buttons at Walmart in the craft section for less than $5. I use them in my alphabet box that I mentioned previously. There are several letters for each letter, so you can get a lot of use out of them now and in the future.
  7. Please do (update us). It's too late to be packing - go to bed!
  8. Hoping that no word is just because of chaos and nothing else.
  9. I agree with the others about Leapfrog and Starfall. I play(ed) the Leapfrog videos in the car and let her play with Starfall when I needed her occupied. After Rye learned her letters and sounds, I made an alphabet box with small items. (I was able to find a bunch at Lakeshore Learning and just things around the house.) You can probably put one together with small toys around your house using Barbie/Polly/Playmobil, etc... I had a box of alphabet flashcards and I have her find items that begin with that sound. To practice numbers, I have a box of number flashcards and also some basic math puzzles (like 1+2=3). With the number cards, I punched a hole in the corner of the card. I have her connect linking links to the card. For the puzzles, one piece will have 1+2, so I have her get one and then two links and connect them. She finds that it is three so she finds the 3 puzzle and checks to she if she is right by connecting the pieces. For lots of other ideas for this age, check out the blog 1+1+1=1. She has ideas and links to blogs with other ideas. I think the preschool years are fun to learn through play, not school-type books.
  10. Not exactly, K12 is NOT a school, K12 DOES NOT provide teachers. The SCHOOL does, not the curriculum. My point is that a student using K12 can be a traditional homeschooler with no teacher support. And I only point this out because people assume that if a student is using K12 curriculum that they are enrolled in a public virtual school. That's not necessarily the case.
  11. My friend has two children (homeschooled) who have had some serious concussions from doing pretty normal things. One of her children's concussion has been life altering. The mom's opinion is that there is something going on either with our food or environment that is making our children's bodies more susceptible to injuries than when we were growing up.
  12. If you purchase K12 as an individual, you don't have teachers. It's no difference than ordering a curriculum that supplies a lesson plan such as Sonlight. So it sounds like you have two children enrolled in a virtual school that uses K12 and the school provides teachers for those students.. You could also provide K12 to your traditional homeschooled student and would not be supplied with a teacher.
  13. This is true. What seems to be causing confusion for some (including some that have posted in this thread) is that the curriculum used in virtual public charter schools is also available for private purchase. Just because someone is using a particular curriculum that is also used in a virtual school, does not mean they their students are public school students.
  14. Your plate sounds full! I can understand not having the time. I'll check out your dd's blog tomorrow. Thanks for responding!
  15. In my state, you can borrow materials from the public school to use as a traditional homeschooler. So using your definition, how would you classify a family who does this (because their materials are free)?
  16. The brown one that I have would probably meet your needs. It's too bad that I can't find it for you. What about this one? I do have this one. It's sturdy and I think you can find it in different sizes. I got mine at Target in the waterbottle section near the exercise/camping aisle.
  17. Pottery Barn Teen has Klean Kanteen hot/cold containers on sale and free shipping!
  18. Rubbermaid used to make a line of containers for lunch just as you describe that I own (they're brown with green lids), but I don't see them available. There is this Rubbermaid twist & take container that may work for you.
  19. In our first year when the kids were in K, I felt I was spending more time correcting their behavior than teaching. A friend suggested that what I was doing wasn't working and that I should just try to focus/notice their positive behavior and reward that rather than focus/notice the negative behavior and punish that. So I made up a school store and with the same two rules as Momma H and the kids could earn the stuff in the store. My friend also suggested that I make the rewards attainable so the kids didn't get discouraged. It worked! We were able to drop the rewards and just use them whenever they needed to be reined in again.
  20. This is not true for PA. PA law does not mention the words homeschooling or homeschooler. The legal term is Home Education. So legally in PA, a child enrolled in a gov't funded school can be referred to as a homeschooler.
