  1. Can someone tell me Gary Taube's stance on Dairy? I do have access to raw milk, if that makes a difference. I'm on vacation right now so I don't have access to a library!
  2. I'm in Sussex County, NJ and I would drive to the poconos for this! I don't have time to read the whole thread but I know there are a bunch of Princeton area WTM'ers that I would LOVE to see again! :D
  3. Now I'm on Day 16! I'm not craving carbs. I still can't believe that I AM DOING THIS!! :w00t: This may be the longest I've been on a diet in my life. :sneaky2: I have another 75 pounds to lose, so this is going to take awhile. I hope I can keep this up. I wanted to go dairy free but I just can't yet. That's one of my goals for the future but for right now, full fat dairy is helping me stay low carb. I didn't have it for the first 2 days but I wouldn't have made it this far without dairy. For example, today I was at Typhoon Lagoon (Disney!) and my family was eating the most mouth watering ice cream waffle cone and I had NOTHING with me. So I went to the coffee hut and ordered a nice cup of coffee with extra cream and equal and it was so satisfying! I know it's not perfect but it kept me from breaking my diet. Today: 2 egg omelette with peppers, onion and ham Lunch: salad with ranch dressing and a cheeseburger(no bun obviously) Snack/treat: Coffee with cream and equal Dinner: sliced steak and sausage with peppers with tomato sauce
  4. My son had a big smile on his face when I told him I have some answers from an expert... he was actually quiet for a time while he was mulling it over. No doubt wondering about different scenarios where a bazooka would be the right tool! :tongue_smilie: :hurray: Thank you and a big thanks to your dh. He made my son's day!
  5. Thanks, I'll reserve this from the library for him. :) Easy, but weird :tongue_smilie: My daughter asks the questions I was prepared for (where does rain come from? Who was the first person on earth? How long will it take to swim to Spain?) My son, just this morning asked me if a bazooka would be powerful enough for an armored car and why are we bothering dropping regular bombs on Libya when we could just drop a nuclear war head and win. This was before 8am this morning!:001_huh: oh, and if you have a 12 foot pile of sand and you bury a bomb the size of a baseball in the middle would it make a smaller explosion because it's buried? Enquiring minds want to know!! I love project! Thanks for sharing, I think we'll do that for science one day. :) The science fair that we are participating in can be in the following categories: Experiment (using scientific method)  Demonstration  Research  Collection  Apparatus I told him last night that we probably won't be able to do a project on bombs. I gave him some suggestions and of course, he loved the projectile idea and I read him a few other ideas that I found online and he's going to let me know later what he wants to do. Thank you all for the discussion!
  6. Thank you all for the interesting discussion (The Radioactive Boy Scout ) and alternate ideas... he just might do projectiles! One other thing that has been on his mind A LOT lately is scale (for example: If a nuclear bomb exploded on the horizon --over there-- how big will the wave be here, and can our boat jump over it? (:001_huh:), If a dust mite is in the pool, and I make wake in the pool with my hand, will it be a tsunami to the dust mite?) ETA: oh goodness, please tell me other 8yo boys ask these sort of questions!
  7. This is for a Science Fair. I think what I'll do is have him choose a new topic then study bombs and explosives for science. Thanks for sharing your story and your advice!
  8. My ds8 would love to do his project about bombs: atomic bombs, nuclear bombs, nuclear warheads, what makes a nuclear bomb the worst bomb and why don't we use it all the time? And about 1000 other questions about bombs. This is what he came up with when I asked him to think about a science fair project. :001_huh: Should I ask him to come up with something testable or is there something I'm missing to actually turn his interest in bombs into a science fair project? Thanks :)
  9. Someone gave us a free pool cover once and didn't clean it. My dh opened it up and about 30 mice scattered.
  10. 1 speckled sussex 2 barred rock 1 Leghorn 4 red sex link Chickens we lost in the past 12 months: 1 Speckled Sussex roo... freeranged into a pig pen  3 Barred Rock eaten by a bear 1 Easter Egger eaten by a fox 1 Barred rock died as a baby chick 2 days old 2 red sex link eaten by a bear
  11. I can't get over the fact that I'm not tempted to have sugar or bread. I have no idea yet if I'm losing weight (no scale and it has only been 5 days) but if this actually works then I may be able to lose 75+ pounds! If only it would all come off in the next month! Thanks again all for the advice, encouragement and sharing your own stories.:grouphug:
  12. Also, I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow and trying to use up all the leeks in my fridge... hence the leeks in my eggs and miso soup!
  13. Since I feel full and have no cravings (because I am full, I mean I just ate four eggs fried in butter with 1 cup of leeks and 1/2 red bell pepper. :001_huh: So I don't know if I'm just pigging out and feel so satisfied because of all the fatty foods I'm eating, or I'm actually kicking my carb habit and will start losing weight. I think I'll pick up those ketone strips today.
  14. Wow, that looks like my menu for today! In my defense, I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow morning and I'm trying to use up my current fridge items. When I get back from vaca, I plan to add fish, greens, and brothy soups. But, short term, to kick the cravings and fight the hunger, I AM allowed to eat steak and cream and burgers and bacon and eggs, right? (right? )
  15. Wow, maybe I can do this? Or maybe I'm doing it all wrong and I won't lose weight. :sneaky2: For breakfast, I'm eating bacon and eggs with leeks and red pepper Lunch: bacon cheeseburger without bread Dinner: Miso soup (no noodles) mushrooms, leeks, seaweed, miso and water. ...and I'm NOT craving carbs  My family ate pizza last night. Pizza! and the smell was a little tempting but I didn't feel like an addict for the first time in my ENTIRE life. Oh, actually, when I was feeling like I needed to cheat 2 days ago, I took some parmesan cheese and fried it into a crisp (like a cracker) and topped each cracker off with a dollop of sour cream. I ate about 6 of them. But then I wasn't hungry and haven't had a craving since! Maybe I can do this. Thank you all for the great diet advice you all give on the board, I've read every one! :tongue_smilie:
  16. Maybe we can ask SWB if we can up the number of PM's that we can store? (I'm too chicken to ask!)
  17. Personally, I would wait until she is 6 or the September that she would be in first grade by age at public school. I would use the time I would have spent on WWE for something else worthwhile. Piano, read-alouds, baking cookies :tongue_smilie: Some of WWE is easy and when the script says to tell the student that "a question is a sentence that starts with a capital letter and ends with a question mark", don't just put the program down saying "gosh, my dd could do this since she was 2!" but skip those parts and move along. There is a method to SWB's madness!
  18. Any child that can copy and comprehend a short story can start WWE but I wouldn't start a child on WWE until 1st grade. I would use the time that I would have spent on WWE and read another book!:D
  19. Veteran HS'ers If you could have only ONE That's tough, can I have Nan in Mass? :D
  20. Critical Thinking -- Do we need it or not? Yes, we need critical thinking. :tongue_smilie: Does anyone teach their children Chinese? No. No one. Ever. Anywhere. :tongue_smilie::tongue_smilie: And of course, Am I the only one... Yes. Thank you Specialmama! :D
  21. Congratulations on being clean/sober for 20 years :) Can you explain a little more about why you don't homeschool and you don't think being a SAHM is ideal? I can see why children-as-focus is not ideal but I don't see being a homeschooler or a SAHM as necessarily being child focused but maybe family focused at best. Thanks, and I only ask because I value your opinions on child rearing. :)
