  1. I'm reading a few non fiction books at the moment: WTM Age of American Unreason Parenting Inc. I just started a fiction book: Confederacy of Dunces
  2. I did follow that, thanks for taking the time to explain! :) When I decided I would homeschool, I had no idea there would be so many choices of curriculum. It helps to hear from people who are doing what I want to do so I can narrow things down.
  3. Whoa, you do RS and Singapore? If you don't mind my asking, why? I am absolutely, completely torn between the 2 programs! My son (5) will be starting K in the fall and I don't know which I like better. My son loves workbooks, so I thought singapore, but I've heard wonderful things about RS (how it lays a foundation for the rest of his academic life etc.). I thought I would do RS for the first year then switch to Singapore with Miquon math. Maybe I should just do Singapore and Right Start? How is it working for you? Thanks!
  4. I can't speak for the person you are quoting but it didn't sound like she was saying "why in the world would anyone choose that" it sounded more like she was genuinely curious as to why someone would choose that path and I think there were some great answers in the thread! Also, I would question my own 18 year old who wanted to join the military because from the few soldiers that I know, they said they would never, ever join without going to college first or doing ROTC in college and joining as a Commissioned Officer. While not an option for everyone, I think this nation's military colleges are wonderful (and free!) :) EDIT: Congratulations and good luck to the young man who passed his physical and will join in the autumn! I'm sure its not easy to make that commitment and yet he sounds determined and I hope his future with the Army is bright.
  5. I watch very little T.V. Very little. That's why I guess I hate to admit that I love American Idol. I watch every episode and when its over, I can't wait for the next season. BTW, I don't watch much TV because I'm too highbrow or anything, I just prefer leafing through magazines, surfing the net, going through cookbooks and reading. When the TV happens to be on though, I can easily get hooked and stay up too late watching whatever is on. :D
  6. So it seems for someone just learning to write, Susan is recommending FLL and WWE together for the grammar stage. I have also read good things about WT. How does this compare? Thanks!
  7. I looked at the abbreviation sticky and I can't figure out what "RR" is. Can someone fill me in? :)
  8. I think I'll be going with RightStart... I'm really torn between that and Singapore. People who use RS usually say its amazing how they "get math" so this is what really sold me on it. I haven't ordered either yet so I'm interested in these math threads!
  9. Looking ahead, there are some things I know I'll want but I hold off just in case a new edition is published. When I see something I like, I just write it in my overall outline to check out.
  10. It's funny because it didn't look like enough. :) I'm glad it seems I'm on the right track. Thanks to all who replied and now I'm off to look up all of the acronyms in this place ;)
  11. Thanks, I do need a list of good books, excellent! :001_smile: Thanks! I didn't think about the handwriting... I'll have to check out HWT. My son does not know how to read but he knows the letters and their sounds. I thought ETC would just be the next step. I'll have to start researching phonics, thanks for the advice!
  12. I just read WTM and it sounds like a good method for my family. This is the plan for Kindergarten with my 5 year old son: Right Start: Math Explode The Code: Reading plenty of free time, reading (by me), plenty of art and some crafts, field trips to the zoo etc. Am I missing anything? He shouldn't need a formal history or science program yet right? Thanks in advance, I'm a little nervous that I'm not doing the right thing!
  13. I am looking into Homeschool my 2 kids, one is 5 and my daughter is almost 4. My original plan was to keep my son at the Montessori school he's at now for kindergarten and my daughter will be there also for preschool. Then I will start homeschooling them each from 1st grade onward. Now, I'm considering starting in Kindergarten but am undecided :001_huh: I have no idea what I'm doing and I haven't figured out a curriculum yet. It's all so overwhelming! I am trying to learn by going through the threads here but its slow going because I have to look up *every single acronym* <sigh> or I have no idea what I'm reading. Anyway, this board looks like a wealth of information and I can't wait to start learning!
