  1. I wonder if they now choose kids who want to go? I can see how it would be culture shock for some kids, maybe the younger they are, the better they adapt?
  2. It's not as expensive as pull-ups! My kids took the magnesium every day for about 6 weeks, then I went with a multi vitamin that had magnesium in it, and they still didn't wet the bed! I hope you try it because it is such an easy fix and let's face it, if there is a magnesium deficiency, then bed-wetting is the side effect, so if nothing else, their little bodies need the magnesium!
  3. Get him a magnesium supplement ASAP! I swear by this because my 2 kids wet the bed almost every single night and I started them both on Magnesium and they both STOPPED wetting the bed at the same time. Prior to this, I use to limit drinks and wake them up in the middle of the night and nothing worked. The magnesium supp. worked quickly on both kids and I could not believe it! :w00t:
  4. I always like to refer people to this article from the NYT because I think scientist and author Harold McGee does an excellent job in explaining nitrates in our food. Makes me hungry for proscuitto di Parma!
  5. It sounds like she knows how to get "hits" on her blog. :001_huh:
  6. OK, that's a bit of a bummer that I can't host 2 children at the same time, but good to know! I just filled out the information form, so I'll see what happens. :) Did you request the same kids you had last year? Does it even work that way?
  7. I've been thinking about doing this too! I think it is a wonderful idea to let these inner city kids get a chance to get out of the city and connect with nature. :) I never would have thought of taking 2 kids though :001_huh: It actually is a good idea so 2 kids don't team up and leave one out. I could take an 8yo boy and 6yo girl....hmmm
  8. I listened to it by myself last night while the kids were in bed and I was doing the dishes. I loved it, and decided to listen again tonight and after a few minutes into it, my dd6 comes RACING out of her room, screaming for her brother to follow saying "my favorite part is coming up!" Of course it was the underpants story  my two kids were laughing for 10 minutes. A little later ds8 comes out of bed to ask me if that boy really did have magic pants! :D Was he magic? Were the pants magic? Inquiring minds want to know!
  9. My son loves the drawing! That's one of his favorite parts of C.
  10. When I do C with my daughter, I'm simply going to move things around. We will jump right into subtraction, then area, money and time. Then we will move to multiplication. I didn't like C at first because it was too slow compared to B. But I think the addition review was just too much at first because my son knew addition very well and didn't need the review. I actually like level C now that we're finishing it up. I may supplement level D next year with MM but I'd like to keep using RS since it is working so well.
  11. Yes! The power of Myth with Bill Moyers is wonderful. Although I haven't watched it in many years so I'm not sure how dated it would look to me now. No one has mentioned Transformations of Myth Through Time but I think that one is another excellent book!
  12. Thank you, I'm glad I posted instead of eating more so that I would feel better (whoa, it's a vicious cycle isn't it?) ooh, a cheat day... interesting! Thanks :) I love this! Thank you. Good point. I did 4 weeks, I CAN do another 4 weeks. I can. :) Thanks for the reminder.
  13. I've lost 16 pounds. I've been doing low carb and I was loving it! Why I sabotaged it today is a question I can't answer. I had a wonderful breakfast of full fat greek yogurt with blueberries and strawberries and cinnamon. I had coffee with equal and cream. Here's where I went wrong: For lunch, I ate an enormous bowl (or two) of N.E. Clam chowder with extra potato :sneaky2: ... then a handful of chocolate chips ... then another handful of chocolate chips and 1/2 banana. Because, of course, I love chocolate and banana together. :banghead: Now I'm sitting here bloated, tired, and sick of myself.
  14. I feel like he is setting himself up for disappointment. Many kids (thousands and thousands of kids) have perfect SAT scores, are valedictorians, are team captains, and have done volunteer work in a third world nation. These are the kids being REJECTED. If he doesn't get into Yale, will he think "I've worked so hard for this, and now I know; I couldn't do it."? Why exactly does he want to go to Yale? If its because he knows he is bright and has perfect grades and scores so he wants to rise to the challenge, I think that is admirable but still unrealistic. As you know (but he may not) there are many smaller schools that will be just the right fit for him and I would probably force a few visits to schools on the East coast like Dickinson, Holy Cross, Williams etc. I would probably try to get him to articulate what he wants to do instead of which school he wants to go to. Military Academies are difficult to get into, yes, but usually one doesn't just fall in love with the AFA or USNA. They fall in love with wanting to be a pilot or a SEAL, or serving their country and they want to go to the best and immerse themselves in military life. They can foster those skills that the academies look for, whereas to get into an Ivy, having perfect scores will not gain you acceptance!
  15. Ah, Inkheart or Inkspell? I was going to download that as an audiobook. I think I'll check it out from the library first so I don't waste my money!
  16. I couldn't get into reading aloud The Frog Princess series. It came so highly recommended by a friend and her kids... but, I just couldn't get past more than 3 chapters. I didn't like the characters and the dialogue was so blah. As far as I can remember, this is the only read-aloud that I couldn't finish. I told me kids they could read it to themselves but I'm getting another book to read aloud! I have an easier time giving up on books that I read because I have nothing to lose! :tongue_smilie: I just got back from vacation and my beach book was The Gatehouse :ack2: by Nelson DeMille. It was the sequel to The Gold Coast which I enjoyed very much. I switched to Ashes and was not disappointed. :)
