  1. DH had knee surgery the end of October and several weeks later found out the sores on his head were from shingles. Doctor gave him a painkiller and that was that. It is possible to lose your sight from shingles, so I was very thankful that he went to the doctor and had it checked though I wish the doctor had given him steroids too. One of my kids had a light case of chicken pox after DH broke out. BTW, this is the second time DH has had shingles. The first time was also after knee surgery. I guess the stress is too much for him. Hoping everything goes well for your DH.
  2. I read through that thread. It motivated me to try a loop one more time. We have finally found a loop that will work for 13yo. :hurray:
  3. Five in a Row for me too. I bought it for now 16yo. We rowed a few books. Same thing with the next kid. This year I realized that the youngest (soon to be ten) was getting too old. I recently sold many of the books we didn't absolutely love and sent the manuals to The Book Samaritan.
  4. Not sure if this is what you are hoping for. http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/dracula/ http://www.cliffsnotes.com/study_guide/literature/Dracula-Book-Summary.id-91.html
  5. I feel like an idiot. ;) I never wanted to be in a co-op and somehow find myself in one. Someone at church invited my older girls to participate in a Shakespeare class. I thought it was an independent class. We signed them up only to find out later that the class is part of a new co-op/"community." It's possible some of the other co-op members are upset with me because I'm not there. My girls(13yo and 16yo) ride public transportation and I pick them up at the end of class. I do intend to help with the play they are going to present, but I doubt we'll participate next year. I hate losing an entire day of school. We have plenty of outside activities (church youth group, children's choir, gymnastics lessons, etc.) to keep us busy.
  6. Stef, you may be able to find some answers at this website: http://simplycharlottemason.com/ They have a discussion forum too. Maybe someone there can answer your questions about doing CM while meeting requirements. Best of luck!
  7. If anyone is interested, this is a link to a video of the flooded areas.
  8. You know what? My kids ASK me to make tater tot casserole. They love it. When I feel like making it extra special I add French's French Fried Onions. :D
  9. Well, I think you get used to it (my own experience). For some reason I don't see it until guests are on the agenda. I don't like having a dirty/messy house but I get overwhelmed when I think about trying to clean it. My mom thinks it has something to do with perfectionist tendencies...because I can't do it perfectly, I get overwhelmed, throw up my hands, and quit. My husband grew up with a very organized mother. Her house was clean and home cooked meals were on the table for breakfast and supper. For years he silently compared me to his mom. My lack of homemaking abilities was a real sore spot for years. Then, he got a job at church where he visited other homes weekly. He realized that many people weren't like his mom. He is now a lot more relaxed about the state of our home and tells me to chill out when I start getting stressed. I also wonder if the size of house makes a difference. We have five people and a medium dog living in a 1047 sq ft house. We don't have a designated space for homeschooling so there is stuff stashed all over the house. Oh, and we actually park in our garage instead of using it as a storage space. I admit I'm messy and yes, it bothers me. Apparently not enough to change.
  10. We are in the Willamette Valley too. Our backyard has flooded for the first time in years. The patio was under water yesterday and eventually flowed through the garage and down the driveway. DH came home and dug some trenches to increase the flow of water. Years ago DH put in a drainage system but apparently the pipes are filled with dirt. I've learned a lesson. Not mowing or raking the leaves in the fall can slow down the water flow and increase the chance of flooding. Some lessons are learned the hard way.
  11. Kel, I'm sorry. He's so young. I'm so glad he was able to spend the holidays with you and the kids. Hopefully they will be able to tuck away those sweet memories of their Papa.
  12. Wow! He has a lot of great books. Off to check the library. It Figures!
  13. So sorry you are dealing with lice. It makes me cry every time we come in contact with them. We've never had a case but I still treat heads and clean the house. It is very stressful.
