My daughter (10) has been swimming year round for two years now. Maybe your son would like it more if he knew that he would be recognized even if he doesn't win. Two things my daughter loves for motivation are the "personal best" ribbons the summer teams gives out, and the dollar store party prizes/oriental trading co. trinkets the winter swim coaches gave to kids who attended a certain percentage of practices. They enjoy the recognition for all their hard work. Some weeks i was just an air head candy, but the kids love it.

Newer crock pots get hotter then the older models. This is done to get the food through the "danger zone" faster. The people at amazon who said the pot gets too hot may just be seeing this "improvement."

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. The kids will all enjoy the wordplay. It is wonderful. I'm still mad that I missed the book as a child.

Ouch. I don't know how high your fines are, but our local library caps the fines at $25 for a group of items returned at one time. You might want to call/check the library website and see if your library has a similar rule.
