POLL: would you be upset about this?
ljf replied to MyThreeSons's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'd be mad, and I'd report him to the Better Business Bureau in your area. Regardless of the law, work should be authorized before it is done. That is just good business practice. Having said that I don't believe that SC has a law requiring a written estimate. I found a SC bill to do so, but it is not in the code when I pull that up. The bill http://www.scstatehouse.net/sess112_1997-1998/bills/3843.htm Title 56, with no chapter 33 (the chapter that the bill would have added) http://www.scstatehouse.net/CODE/titl56.htm Linda -
I'd talk to a real estate sales person in the are of the land. Ask how much the land is worth now and how much it would be worth with the easement. Then you can see if the tax breaks offered are anywhere near the depreciation in the land value due to the easement.

Fun Game: How old is your brain?
ljf replied to crazycoffeechic's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm 42 and I have a 28 year old's brain? I hope s/he wants it back. I think it is failing. Linda -
My soon to be four year old climbs like that. Fortunately she has only done so over the landing (only about 5 feet to fall). We have her in gymnastics, but I'm not sure that it doesn't just give her more ideas.

Those who had a baby later in life
ljf replied to Quiver0f10's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Not me, but my oldest sister drove my mom to the hospital when she had my youngest sister (my dad was out of the country on business). The nurses asked my sister's boyfriend if he was the father! -
You could get a converter box for your TV. If you request a coupon from https://www.dtv2009.gov/ApplyCoupon.aspx a box can be had for about $10. That's IF you want TV after the change over to digital. We got a box (and a new antenna) for our TV. We now get three PBS stations. I'm happy with that.

If you don't like CFL you could try LED light bulbs. They are more efficient then CFLs, but their light is also more directional. I saw some on sale at Wal-Mart the other day. The LED bulbs were about the same price as CFLs ($6). This site compare different bulbs (the used a very expensive LED bulb): http://www.productdose.com/article.php?article_id=1142 Linda

I always travel with food (dry snacks that won't run into problems with the TSA), and and empty water bottle that I fill at the water fountain after I'm through the security check point. Last time we pre-measured dry drink mixes into bottle so we had a drink we liked for the plane ride. I also make sure that I have a change of clothing packed for each kid, and me in my carry on. I don't want a grumpy wet kid flying.

Hints for a car sick 3 year old?
ljf replied to Jayne J's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We used Dramamine and sea bands. I used to break the pills in quarters to get the right dose. I also put a thin blanket on her lap. Hopefully the blanket catches everything, and I can roll up the blanket and seal it in a bag. Barf bags are good in theory, but mine never gave the warning needed to use them. -
Anyone have an online coupon for Klean Kanteen?
ljf replied to Faline's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I got Sigg bottles at Wegmans, and they discounted them ($13 for 1/2 liter with action top vs. $18-19 online). So you might want to try some of the natural/organic food stores too. -
What are your favorite Wii games?
ljf replied to momtolgd's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Smooth Moves and Mario Party 8 are fun for the little ones since that have mini games to play - my 3 yo likes these. Lego Star Wars is good because two people can play together co-operatively, instead of just against each other. -
Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson, we were supposed to read it in high school. I just could not do it, no matter how many times I tried. YUCK.

Need advice-Am I too trusting, or was I scammed?
ljf replied to happyWImom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
If she doesn't send the items I'd also file a Mail Fraud complaint with the US Postal Service. If the books are not sent, I'd assume that her story is fabricated, and would want pursue all possible avenues to protect others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_fraud http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx -
Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown homeschool days
ljf replied to momofkhm's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Here is a link to the brochure for the Colonial Williamsburg Days: http://www.history.org/history/teaching/groupTours/images/HomeEducators.pdf And the form to make your reservations: http://www.history.org/history/teaching/groupTours/images/HomeEducatorsRequestForm.pdf I could only find the information for the last home educator's discount at the Jamestown Settlement/Yorktown Victory Center: http://historyisfun.org/SPECIAL-ADMISSION-FOR-HOMESCHOOL-FAMILIES.htm It also occurred during the spring Colonial Williamsburg Home Educator's days - looks like a trend. I also noted that Colonial Williamsburg used to have a "Home Educator's _Week_," but now it the the "Home Educator's Experience" they have expanded it beyond a week! There is also a Group buy at Homeschool Buyers Co-op for electronic field trips to Colonial Williamsburg. I don't know anything about them other then the link: https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/index.php?option=com_epp_offer&Itemid=633 Linda -
The program itself is silent on religion/creation, but it is distributed by Access Research Network (ARN). ARN supports creationism. http://www.arn.org/ It is published by Gravitas Publications, which is totally owned by the author http://gravitaspublications.com/about/ You can see the authors answer to this question here: http://gravitashomeschool.wordpress.com/category/evolution-id-and-creationism/ If you order the book directly from ARN the packing slip will show the price you paid broken down into the market value of the books and a donation for the balance to ARN. For the level one set the price was $190 and the market value was $133, so I made a $57 tax deductible "donation." As an evolutionist I cringed when I saw the packing slip, but enjoyed the write off. http://www.arn.org/realscience/realscience.html

Ideas needed to get a bitter med down.
ljf replied to Cathy in IL's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Is the medicine available in a smaller dose that he could swallow more then one of? If it is unavailable in a smaller dose can a pharmacist make it into smaller capsules or sell you capsules to fill? Also, if the capsule floats it will be easier to swallow if he looks down at his feet while trying to swallow. That way the capsule will float to the back of his mouth. For flavorings I'd talk to a pharmacist that carries something like FlavoRx http://www.flavorx.com/human/default.asp I assume that these flavoring are concentrated and the pharmacist might have more ideas. -
I am so upset. What is a "debt score"?
ljf replied to Faith's topic in General Education Discussion Board
You CAN get a credit report for your child. If they won't do it online or over the phone, request it by mail following the requirements on this page: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/helpfaq#reqchild I've done this and got letters back stating that there was no credit file for my children (as it should be). I would do this before your son turns 18 because as a minor he most likely has the privilege of being able to void any and all contracts (so states may limit this). This means that IF someone has stolen his identity and been lent money, etc. he might be able to just say "I void the contract" and he is RELEASED of all contractual obligations. That might be a quick way to get the information off his credit report quickly. See http://www.businessweek.com/2000/00_22/b3683155.htm It might seem harsh, but the law is intended to protect minors. This is why businesses won't sell large items to a minor without an over 18 co-signer. -
Edible (backyard) plants anyone?
ljf replied to love2read's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Is there a nature center nearby? Many times the people working there can tell you all about the plants including which ones are edible. -

http://www.eartheasy.com/grow_nat_slug_cntrl.htm I used to just use regular sand. Although not as sharp as diatamaceous earth I think it irritated them enough that the went elsewhere to eat.
