  1. I've posted this before, but Black Bean Tortilla Casserole is vegetarian, inexpensive, and easy to make. I haven't found anyone yet who doesn't like it (including children). It reheats well too. I don't make the toppings, but just serve with sour cream and guacamole on the side.
  2. Is it bio-identical estrogen? Did she also advise you to take progesterone? If the answer to either of these questions is no, I would find another doctor.
  3. Do you already have the land? Many times house plans are dictated by the lot.
  4. No, but here is a thread on them at Garden Web. Here is a link to the Garden Web laundry forum if you want to do other searches. They have an appliance forum, kitchen forum, bath forum, etc. and are great sources of information!
  5. I think it depends on the stove you get. You need one that does not emit particles into the room air. My aunt lived with a wood-burning stove for years. Hers was an old-fashioned kind with poor venting. The doctors always used to ask if she had grown up on a farm, because her lungs rattled so when they listened. It was due to all the particulates she had inhaled from that wood-burning stove. I have a friend who bought one of the good wood stoves -- gives off lots of heat, but no particulates. It was a *lot* more expensive than my aunt's stove!
  6. If she is reading on a 3rd grade level or better, Rewards Intermediate would be a good choice. To use this program, she must be solid on reading one-syllable words including CVC, CCVC, CVCC, CCVCC, CVCe, and CCVCe words. RI is scripted and very easy to do. It takes about 30 hours working one-on-one to complete the program. To do it, you need the Teacher's Guide and a student book (about $100 total with shipping). This is a very efficient program for teaching multi-syllable word attack skills and developing fluency.
  7. Cancelled our Netflix subscription. Did not renew several magazine subscriptions. Instead of using 4 puffs of my "signature" cologne every day (as I have for at least half a dozen years), reduced to 2 puffs and I even skip days now. Started taking things back that I regret buying, even if only $5. I'm also doing things such as combining errands to save money on gas, and as a family we're eating out less often, but I figure everyone is doing that kind of thing. What unusual items are you cutting back on that you took for granted two years ago?
  8. I don't see homeschooling as undermining public education at all. In my mind, universal education provides the minimum amount of education for its members to function as our society desires. I just wish that our universal education system was much better than it is.
  9. Interesting question. I found several sites that said that mature cauliflower leaves are edible. Here is one article that describes that mentions secondary edibility of quite a few plants. It doesn't mention kale but, since kale leaves are the primary edible portion of the plant, I don't see why the thinnings would be any less edible. (I'd cut off the roots, though.)
  10. Wow! Hadn't heard that about the HP laptops. We have several HP desktop computers purchased from Sam's Club, some of them quite a few years old now (two others are quite new -- only a few months old) and not one has had a problem. Dell used to be great, but after they moved their customer service abroad (India?) they became very difficult to deal with. I have seen quite a few posts from people like us who used to buy Dell, but quit after their customer service became so bad.
  11. In the past, my dh (works with computers as his livelihood) has found good values at Sam's Club. Are you a member or do you know a member? These are usually Hewlett Packard computers. They are good for home use. I would get the highest priced one within your budget. I think they usually come with monitors, but I don't remember for sure. Dh used to buy Dell computers, but finds the HPs better value these dAys.
  12. Do you by any chance take supplements? My dd developed an allergy to the sun after taking a supplement that contained a Chinese herb. Trying to think of the name of it -- dong quai? Anyway, if you take any herbal supplements, I recommend looking them up on the internet to see if any mention sensitivity to the sun as a possible side effect. About half the websites I checked did not mention this side effect, so you need to check multiple sites.
  13. I don't think Sonata has that amnesia effect. You might want to ask for that to try.
  14. Actually, I don't think it works that way. If the warrant was issued in good faith, then evidence gathered inside the compound could form the basis for removal of the children if it seemed they were at risk for abuse. It would be sort of like a policeman stopping a car based on a false stolen car report, then finding that the driver was intoxicated. Of course, all of this will be argued in court. My understanding is that CPS has a mandate to remove children if an investigation reveals serious risk of abuse. I don't think that mandate is dependent on whether an initial report of abuse is real or not. Edited to add: I saw Flora Jessop on tv last night. Apparently this woman had talked to her on the phone for a total of about 40 hours. Towards the end, after police had been contacted, several of these phone calls were videotaped. Parts of one conversation were shown on tv. The woman was very convincing.
  15. Not Ambien, but I used Sonata intermittently over a period of several years. It was really wonderful for me. I could take it, sleep 8 hours, and not feel drugged or dopey the next morning. It was good for helping me re-train my sleep system. When I got "off", I would take Sonata for a few days in a row and it would seem to "reset" me into a normal sleep cycle. Eventually I didn't need it anymore. My only gripe about it was that it was so expensive. It was $1 per pill even with insurance (about $3 per pill without insurance). Ambien came out later. I would imagine it has a similar effect. If you don't want to waste money, have the pharmacist make up just a trial portion of the initial prescription. If it doesn't work well for you, you're not out an entire month's supply of pills. If it does work out, you just go back to the pharmacy to get the rest of the Rx.
  16. Go into a post by them, then click on the little balance scale in the upper righthand corner of the post. That will allow you to leave positive rep. If you like, you can include a little comment and perhaps your name in the comment field before submitting your rep.
  17. The law would permit this if they were legal marriages. This FAQ indicates it was common practice for the men to not legalize any of their marriages in order to avoid charges of bigamy or polygamy. Since the 14yos were not entering into legal marriages, the men are likely guilty of statutory rape. Mothers who gave consent could probably be charged as accomplices to statutory rape. This particular community fits the criteria of a family. When CPS has good reason to believe a child in a family is at risk of abuse, it is obliged to remove all the children from that family. It is not required to determine exactly which children are being abused and which are not, in order to remove only the abused children. I think that is exactly what happened in this FLDS case, and that the government has acted within its legal mandates.
  18. The underage girls could not have been legally married. The men typically legalized only their first marriage. Adulterous relationships cannot be prosecuted, so they did not legally marry their subsequent wives. Statutory rape laws apply if the underage girls were not legally married.
  19. Try heating it with a hair dryer. Heat makes most adhesives become tacky.
  20. There was a thread on tankless water heaters not too long ago.
  21. You want to sign up for the personal account. That allows transfers at no charge when they are done just with bank accounts, not credit cards. Sign up for a personal account and then verify by means of a bank account. The website will have you enter the account information off your check (bank routing # and your account #). Then PayPal will make two deposits of a few cents into that account. Once the deposits are made, you log on to PayPal and tell them exactly how much those deposits were. At that point they know that the bank account is really yours, and you are all set. (That verification process takes 3 to 5 business days.) Once you have a personal account set up this way, you don't even have to manually transfer money from your bank account to your PayPal account in order to purchase items. You can have a zero PayPal balance, pay someone, and PayPal will instantly debit your bank account for the exact amount. If you sell something and someone pays you using the same kind of account (one that draws from a bank account rather than a credit card), you are not charged anything. Basically a personal account is not charged for either payments or receipts (as long as you don't receive a credit card payment). Premier account is necessary if you want to sell on eBay. eBay requires that you accept credit card PayPal payments, which mean as a seller you pay a fee for each transaction. With the premier account, however, *every* payment you receive is charged a fee, whether it is made from a credit card or bank account.
  22. No. Not unless she sees something on tv or in the newspapers, or hears something from friends. Then I will go into the whole explanation-of-consequences routine.
  23. Maybe it's just my three cats, but I'm sure if I put honeycomb shades on a window they liked, I'd soon have honeycomb shades with tons of cat fur snared on the sides (from them nosing their way behind the shade). I'm not sure how those bottom-up shades work, though. Is there room for them to nose behind the shade to sit in the window?
  24. Actually, the polygamous relationships are probably not illegal. If a man never marries legally, he can cohabit with multiple women. There is no law against this. That's what most of the men appear to have done.
