  1. Should I have his body fat checked to make sure he is overweight? He is 5. If you met my kid and I told you that they consider him overweight, you would laugh. He looks fit but more of a football players build (broad shoulders, see the muscles in his tummy etc)
  2. My child is 5 and in the 60% for height and 90% for weight. My doctor suggested that I have him have a whole grain, high protein, lower glycemic carb diet: Sugar Busters: 1. No juice...just roaring waters and sobe lifewater. 2. Dessert only 2 times a week. No candy or cookies. Use sugar free jello or sugar free pudding with cool whip. REAL FOOD? 3. Whole grains: popcorn, WG bread, brown rice, whole grain pasta, loads of high fiber fruits and veggies. 4. No white carbs Both of my kid's are on the heavier side. They have small waists but broader shoulders and legs. My 5 year old is involved in soccer and swim classes. I am a careful parent (1- 4 oz juice a day, whole grains with some white foods, dessert but not everyday). Have you ever experienced this? Did they thin out? What do you suggest?
  3. What are you doing for spanish for your homeschooler? Do you like it? Pros? Cons? Suggestions? My goal is for my kiddos to work towards becoming fluent.
  4. For some reason I am panicked. I promised my dh that I would try to have an open mind about sending our child (K) to Public School. He works for the school system. I have all of the respect in the world for the teachers. I just had a terrible public school experience at some of the top es, ms, hs in my state (bullying, discouraging teachers, teacher calling me a bimbo, sexual harassment, peer pressure etc.) Please pray that I will not operate out of my flesh tonight. I feel very pressured to try public school. I feel like I am not trusting God that He will lead our family. It seems like everyone knows what they are doing next year for school (including dh) and I feel like I am jumping out of an airplane and hoping my parachute will open. HELP! Please pray for me.
  5. Which method do your children use in musical instrument lessons: suzuki, traditional or other? Why did you choose this method?
  6. I am planning 6 months in advance for the challenge of homeschooling my very bright, challenging boy. I am working on a list of Bible scriptures to inspire me while homeschooling. Do you have any suggestions? My challenges are temper and patience. But "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Philippians 5:13 :)
  7. Which blogs inspire you to become a better homeschooler, try something new and/or push the limits of your own capabilities to teach?

  9. My husband and I are very passionate about our kids learning an instrument. I am considering starting my son on group guitar or piano lessons since he is so extroverted. He is 5 1/2. What is the key to your success with your children practicing? staying with an instrument? :bigear: a. Reward charts with a goal prize b. Get rid of TV c. Verbal praise or staying with them while they practice. d. waiting until they are older and can appreciate lessons e. do not give them the option to quit f. all of the above
  10. I was at B & N yesterday and saw something called Brainetics. Has anyone ever used this program? Is it a scam? Just curious~
  11. Do you know of an enjoyable spanish program for 5-6 year olds? FYI They are exposed to spanish since my extended family is Puerto Rican. Family talks to them in spanish...it is helpful but not enough. The answer I always get is *have them speak to them in spanish.* I know that is good advice, but please post an enjoyable program recommendation for my dc. :)
  12. I keep hearing some statistic or guesstimate that explains why you do not have to spend as many hours at home as you do in school.
  13. Please finish this sentence or something similar: 1 hour of homeschooling is equal to ______ hours in school.

  17. My husband and I were talking about the advantages of homeschooling. Which classes are your children working above grade level? On grade level? Behind grade level? How do you decide to promote a child in a certain subject?:bigear:
  18. Math Mammoth Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons: taught my son to read well in less than 6 months.
  19. Which type of netbook do you have? How much did you buy it for?
  20. I am going to buy either a kindle, nook, nook color or a netbook. I am considering the kindle since it is such a great e-reader and amazon has tons of free books (and my family loves theirs). The nook is appealing since I can borrow books from the local library. The nook color is appealing since I can hack it to make it an android tablet where it can become a kindle and nook e-book reader as well as use android apps. The netbook seems like it would be better for forums like this one and homeschooling stuff + I can download all of the e-readers to take advantage of free books. What would you do if you were me?:bigear:
