  1. :bigear: I'm almost convinced too! I hope you get responses to this thread. The only reason I have been holding back is that it seems to be overwhelmingly religious. Not that I have a problem with that as we are are quite conservative but only in that I am thinking that diagramming Scripture would be much harder than See Spot run. Looking forward to what the Hive has to say. Lori
  2. Adding my voice to those who wish you would share:lol: I am also a Fly Lady dropout.. We don't wear shoes in the house.. lol
  3. Hi.. Can a WW user please tell me if the word lists at http://www.wordlywise3000.com/ are the same as in the books? And are all the lessons listed?? I have a very visual learner that is not into workbooks and so I was wondering if it was possible(advisable?) to just use the website instead of the workbook. Thanks for your .02 Lori
  4. IMHO tea, even sweetened tea, is healthier than soda. No artificial colors or flavors and no CO2. I do occasionally have a soda(2x a year or so) but I have always wondered about ingesting a substance that our body expels with every breath. lol
  5. My DS wants to wear his "big boy underwear" on Saturday(daddy will be home to help=) I hope someone can post the link to this post.. I'm :bigear:! Thanks!
  6. ETA: Well darn it.. This makes no sense without the quote she was referring to. LOL I just found the "Multi quote" button to late! Anyhow, she was quoting another who said they would be more likely to complain about a non-fiction book with informational errors.. but it's not funny now..lol :iagree:&
  7. Hi, I'm no lawyer.. and I'm from WA state but I think it doesn't specifically means tests. We have been under a public school alternative learning program this year and on my dd "learning plan" for the year it says this after listing out the Educational Learning Requirements for the year.. This one for the Arts and Health/PE Methods of Evaluation: Progress will be evaluated by observation, daily work, tests, quizzes, projects, performances, exhibits, reports, participation, and/or performance-based assessments. Successful completion will be indicated by familiarity with and/or mastery of a majority of the concepts at year’s end. And this one for Math, LA, Science and history Methods of Evaluation: . Successful completion will be indicated by familiarity with and/or mastery of a majority of the concepts at year’s end. So I'm thinking that as long as you are able to demonstrate(through your own written record, sample work pages from beginning to end of year or even test scores) progress through the year and from year to year.. you should be good. You can probably find what your state expects the public schoolers to learn each year online. My dd's advisory teacher said that "majority" of the concepts meant 51%.. lol And I think that "familiarity with" is pretty flexible. For my records, I just sit down at the end of the week and write out a blurb on each subject. I cover what we did, what we used to do it(book titles, worksheets, videos, webpages), and add in quiz scores(I do nearly all my science and history quizzes verbally). I do/will keep a few example pages and any formal testing scores along with that for her records but that's pretty much it. Sorry it's so long.. lol I tend to overthink stuff too=D... Lori
  8. I would love if we had a full year co-op with educational classes!! Science especially is so hard to get done at home! I agree it breaks up the day.. but for this household it would be worth it=D Lori
  9. I plan on it for my dd. We are going to do Song School Latin next year(she will be 7 turning 8). Then I plan on going on with the Latin For Children A. I like it's parts to whole approach and she likes the songs=D
  10. Hi! I'm mostly a lurker too.. I admire your bravery.. lol Have a great day!
  11. Can't complain about our library (system)! It's a huge library system that involves 12 branches in different towns plus the main huge library. And if they don't have something I want.. I can have up to five inter-library loans going at any time. They will find and borrow the item from another library system anywhere in the country! You might see if your library has the ILLiad service.
  12. I second the Tillamook Cheese Factory (further north than Newport though) free and very interesting. I second and third the Hatfield Marine Science Center - our favorite and it's free(donations accepted) http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/visitor/ Depoe Bay has a great whale watching center(also free) and they have like a scavenger hunt for the kids through the different "exhibits". No live animals but skeltons and the like. Love Ft. Clapsop http://www.nps.gov/lewi/planyourvisit/fortclatsop.htm If you get down as far as Bandon.. there is the West Coast Game Safari. Lots of petting opportunities(I think we got to pet a bear). http://www.gameparksafari.com/ Farther inland.. in Winston(you'll see signs for Roseburg which is the "large" town right by Winston) is the Wildlife Safari. It is very, very cool drive through(think giraffes looking in your car windows!) and has a walk through village also. http://www.wildlifesafari.net/ One neat thing about the WS is that they allow the animals to breed so in the spring/early summer there are always baby animals gadding about. Baby zebras are so very cute! We are headed to Depoe Bay for Sunday and Monday nights.. maybe we'll see you at the aquarium.. I'll be the crazy lady staring at you trying to figure out if I know you.. LOL
  13. In addition to not doing re-imbursements to parents for CBI's(which is completely understandable), the message we got from CVA today seemed to indicate that we would no longer be able to use the entire allottment for just one thing but would have to be split between art/music/PE/curriculum. We use ours to pay for gymnastics but dd does not want to take any music or art classes and I need very little curriculum.. Did anyone else get that from their CVA/PPP advisory teacher???? I'll jump through a lot of hoops but the return on my time has to be worth it and so far... it's not looking like it's going to be worth it. I will call my legislators tomorrow. I hadn't because I thought it was laready law! Hopefully we can stop some of the nonsense anyway.
  14. :iagree: I was raised kind of Pentecostal but now just mainstream Protestant and never heard anyone say that we were not animals(by classification) only that we had souls and were made in God's image. That "animals" are mostly(there are exceptions to every rule) ruled by instinct alone. Whereas humans can and do make choices based on emotion.
  15. :grouphug: Hugs to you.. She is playing with my son(who would have been 5 this year) in heaven. Remembering you and Lydia in my prayers.
  16. I'm pretty new to scheduling but this year I tried the every subject every day thing and it did NOT work! This is what I am giong to try with my second grader next year. Daily Bible, LA, Math and Latin M,W,F History T,TH Science Then the little stuff M - Music T - Health W - World Cultures/Geography TH - Critical Thinking? F - Art Good luck and keep us posted!
  17. Going with the wb here. It wouldn't get done otherwise=D
  18. I have no comparison to offer you, only our experience with AS1. I'm on week 12 of AS1(2006 version) with a 7 year old advanced reader. Some of the books have been good, some a little dry to be considered CM style "living books" IMO. My dd does not like to color, so we too do a lot of the crafts in B&W but she loves all the crafts to do. I do have to tweak it as it is a little heavy on the Native American focus for me and my dd is very visual so I add in videos where I can find them. We never use the MYO History pages or the MYO Native American History pages. I was not impressed with the WP "exclusive" that is used with the newer IG's either. I bought our IG used and am able to get all the books but one through my fantastic library system so I have no regrets over lots of $$ spent. Overall my dd is happy when it's time for history and her retention seems to be good so we will be continuing on with AS2. I have looked at Guesthollow and it looks pretty darn good. Good luck and clear thinking in your decision making process=D Lori
  19. Thank you so much.. You have confirmed my suspicions(about it being too easy, and not knowing what a noun was) and that makes me unhappy since now I have to go out looking again.. I'll begin looking with R&S though.. I want a good thorough grammar. But I did so want easy too.. lol Thanks again.. Lori
  20. I have read and read about Easy Grammar and have just about decided to use it next year. However, I make much better decisions about curriculum if I read why people DIDN'T like it than if they did.. lol If you have stopped using it.. may I ask why?? Has anyone used Easy Grammar and taught Latin?? And did your children do okay with understanding the grammar? dd will be 7 turning 8 next year doing Easy Grammar 3. She reads at a 5th-6th grade level and has no real need for a spelling/vocab program, just writing and grammar.. which is why I am thinking about the Easy Grammar along with Writing with Ease(for narration and composition). Any thoughts and why you didn't like Easy Grammar would be appreciated. Thanks, Lori
  21. Hi, Does one need to be able to diagram a sentence to do Latin later?? I was thinking of going with Easy Grammar for my dd7 next year, starting Latin For Children the year after that, and I don't think that EG teaches diagramming. Will it be necessary for the Latin?? Thank you all in advance! Lori
