  1. I use an Excel spreadsheet. My kids know when they finish a book to leave it by the computer. I record the title, author and ISBN number (and have a column for the MM/YY) and give it back to them to shelve or put in the library return bag. Easy and quick to print at the end of the year.
  2. Following in case anyone finds Grade 11. :) edited to add.. or the answer keys.. lol
  3. https://www.horseloversmath.com/ I didn't find this until recently.. but it looks like a super fun way to get math done if it fits where she is. (or even on the side).
  4. You are getting in the important stuff.. I'd let science and history slide in favor of play any day.
  5. I've used tfb for a couple of years now and I've not found any of the books to be missing sections.. (that I have run across anyway). There are some of the more obscure books that are not available yet, but they do add them sometimes. For example, How to Teach Art to Children did not used to be available and it now is. Were there specific books you were looking for that I can check on for you? It really is a pretty good deal if you are looking at using multiple books as I do.
  6. http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-000-BeginnersCourse.php Haven't used it yet but I had it saved for later. :)
  7. I've thought about opening my own library.. lol Books and curriculum both.
  8. Love, love, love! the Berenstain Bear Big Book of Science and Nature! If you allow videos.. Magic School Bus and Liberty's Kids We also love Evan Moor Science. The Read and Understand Science is good.. but she may not want anything else that says it's "reading" :) So the Daily Science might be a better choice. Quick and easy. We use their Daily Geography too. The Let's Read and Find Out science books are awesome. I also recommend the Story of the World for history, if you want to start with Ancient History. (but that probably doesn't fit with Monarch very well) If you want more of a "social studies" type approach, I'd go with something like an Abeka or BJU Heritage Studies textbook. You can find those used (in an older edition) very cheaply and I think they are pretty colorful and interesting. Have you thought about a site like lessonpathways ? Ooh, I had forgotten about these.. pdf's http://www.mhschool.com/instructional_materials/ca/fwo.html I don't have my ipad in front of me but if you allow that sort of thing.. there are some pretty good science apps for that age.
  9. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this, and the obviously negligent employees of animal control! From what you have described.. you are never going to get anywhere with A) the neighbor B) animal control or C) the legal system. I am squeamish about such things but I would definitely have someone "take care of" those dogs for me. You and all of your neighbors have been so much more than patient and generous about the situation!!
  10. Living Math book lists here also: http://love2learn2day.blogspot.com/p/math-book-lists-tba.html http://thriftyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-ultimate-list-of-math-literature.html
  11. It's definitely aimed at older kids.. I think Amazon says like 9-12?? lol I just asked him and he said it's boring. :) And I thought I was doing so well stopping and explaining things in more simple terms to him. oops. There are science experiments in the SOTW AG or at least that's what they call themselves.. but there is no real scientific explanation along with them. Although one could argue that at 6/7 they don't need a lot of scientific explanation.. just hands on exploration of the world around them. :)
  12. Free virtual dissection http://www.examiner.com/article/free-virtual-dissections-online pdf science comics (in English, but from South Africa.. so I have heard the grade levels might be off by one) http://www.thunderboltkids.co.za/ Reading lists for American history http://www.abookintime.com/americanhistoryreadinglist.html Civil War Curriculum http://www.civilwar.org/education/teachers/curriculum/?referrer=https://www.pinterest.com/ You might also check out Studies Weekly. It's not online and it's not free (but it's cheap!). They have a fun Civil War to the present set. You can order any grade/state.. and you can preview most of it online. https://www.studiesweekly.com/publications/Alaska-Fifth-Grade-Social-Studies
  13. ExcitedMama, Happy to share. But it's not Science in the Beginning.. It's Ancient Science. This one.. http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Science-Time-Traveling-World-Exploring-History-Making/dp/0471215953 I'm not sure I would consider it a "complete" science curriculum (whatever that means) but my children love experiments and I love that the explanations go along with the history we are learning. I do also supplement with Evan Moor Daily Science. :) Anyway, my ds6 listens to the explanations but is much more interested in the experiments. Tonight, he got so excited to find the North Star.
  14. We are doing SOTW1 this year and I put them in as close to civilization order as I could. I am also using Ancient Science by Jim Wiese and incorporating civilization specific art and lots of books from our library in the book basket. (I dropped the Bible chapters since we cover that separately and I wanted to be done in 38 weeks). I have not found it to be awkward so far. Occasionally, there will be a reference to "do you remember when we talked about" in the beginning of the chapter but it is very brief and isn't confusing to my ds so far. Hope it helps. 15. And here is the one for the 6th grader. I forgot to say that we are using Ancient Science by Jim Wiese, lots of books from the library and I did buy some of the World in Ancient Times series for reading. Those art or science projects that don't list the reference to the Ancient Science book were from library books or pinterest. And we will do some of the history projects too, such as making tunics etc. Hope this inspires some ideas for you. 6th grade - k12 Human Odyssey, vol 1 Class Syllabus for the 2015-2016 School Year: Quarter 1 September WEEK 1 HISTORY: Prehistory, Part 1 – Story of the World – Introduction ART: Cave Painting, Pictographs (Artistic Pursuits, Bk 1, Lesson 18) SCIENCE: Ancient Science – Science from the Dawn of Time – Project 1, The Stone Age & Project 3, Sweet Tooth WEEK 2 HISTORY: Prehistory, Part 2 – Human Odyssey Pt 1, Ch 1: How Civilized! 17. I highly recommend Evan Moor's Daily Science as a supplement to any science year! I prefer a school type approach .. with a variety of science disciplines. Not like Apologia, RSO, RSfK, etc which focus on one subject until you'll puke if you have to study about ______ any more! lol So my recommendations would lean more toward that style. Abeka, BJU, etc. We have also used Studies Weekly in the past. It is not a complete curriculum unless you are a science teacher that can build around it but it is a cheap, fun supplement that gives snippets about scientists of the past, discoveries or inventions, etc. We used it as a jumping off place to get books/videos from the library about whatever grabbed dd's attention. I completely gave up trying to find a "curriculum" for this year and we are doing Ancient Science by Jim Wiesse alongside our Ancient history studies this year. lol Good luck!!
  18. Lots of good looking free resources here.. http://lastingthumbprints.com/free-chronicles-of-narnia-resource-unit/ And this art curriculum based in Narnia looks fun.. https://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=Art+%2F+Crafts/16&category=Art+Adventures+in+Narnia/9429
  19. Seriously third-ing Wet Brushes! These are small miracle for our family of tender heads!
  20. Thank you for the replies. I thought so.. darn it. lol
  21. Or are they required to copy the problems out of the book? I know there are workbooks for the littles.. (1st and 2nd grade) but all I can find on the internet are packages of 3 books, the textbook, the solutions packet and the test packet. I would love to have a workbook if they exist. Thanks!
  22. Assume you have NO basic craft supplies except Elmer's glue, several pairs of scissors and a box of crayons and that you will be doing various projects out of the SOTW AG (Ancients) as well as art projects based on the civilizations being studied, so cave painting, pots and the like. You have a budget of around $200. What would you fill your cart with??
  23. Second and third these.. My kids love PMK!
  24. I've never like "Academy" even for regular institutions.. lol We are not required to name our homeschool in our state but the kids enjoy being able to tell someone the name. We just use StreetName Elementary, StreetName Middle School etc. This year they got to choose a mascot for their "school" And we now have the StreetName Preschool Princesses, The StreetName Elementary Ninja Trains and the StreetName Middle School Mustangs. They are happy and it makes little difference in the long run. (at the moment anyway).
  25. Yes, I posted Alaska because it was the first one I ran into that had "1865 to the Present". The ones I have used have not been state specific as they use (literally) the exact same set of newspapers for multiple states.. just the teacher's books are slightly different and reference state specific standards that are covered. Yes, most states have state history in the 4th grade and it's intermingled with American history as it applies to your state history (which is cool).
