  1. Yes, I searched first. :) Unless I'm using the wrong words to search, I didn't find my questions. I took the plunge yesterday and got an iPhone 4. 1. I never buy extended warranties. Do I want to make an exception and get the extended warranty for the phone? and... 2. Every iPhone I've seen seems to have that heavy duty Otterbox. Is there a less expensive case that's just as good? Or is it worth the money? Thanks.
  2. For me, I don't care much for historical fiction (actually I think the historical fiction written for kids is much better than adult HF). I also don't understand why so many women love this Jamie character. I don't care if he's a "product of his time", I still can't excuse his treatment of the protagonist. But mostly the reason I don't like it is that I didn't find it to be an interesting story. It was just plain boring (even though it has a lot of action). Also, I don't think the characters have much depth - the author doesn't make me care about them.
  3. No. I don't care what people think if I like or don't like a particular book. And whether someone else likes it or not isn't high on my list. Now that doesn't mean I won't ask for suggestions from someone I know has similar tastes, or won't pay attention to reviews on a site like amazon. But if I don't like a book that others do...meh. I do however, think I insulted a friend by telling her I didn't like Outlander. She's passionate about the series, and can't understand why anyone wouldn't like it. I otoh, can't understand why anyone would.
  4. I used to feel like that, but little by little I've let it drop that I don't send cards anymore. Some people might think I'm wrong not to send cards, but at least they don't feel personally slighted, thinking they were dropped from my list. And now when we get cards, I know it's because the person wants to send one. They don't do it because they feel obligated, or because I sent them one.
  5. I used to send them on and off, then a few years ago I just stopped altogether.
  6. It doesn't bother me in the least. Informal slang words come and go, and that will not change. People say it in my area all the time. My teenage son and his friends use it regularly. I don't say it simply because it sounds (to my ears anyway) silly coming out of my mouth. I don't think it sounds silly when others say it though.
  7. This is what got me. There are books I've read all the way through only to realize I didn't like them, but none were in 2010.
  8. Those were so funny! I loved the Daniel Radcliffe episode. I've only ever seen small clips of Extras on YouTube. I think I'm going to put the whole thing on my Netflix queue.
  9. The Hunger Games. I know people love this series, but I couldn't even get through the first book. Didn't like it at. all.
  10. Loved that book! I didn't think I would due to the subject matter, but it was so well done.
  11. I know, but it won't bother me. From what little I've seen it's hilarious mainly because his dad seems totally oblivious to what he sounds like.
  12. Ricky Gervais always makes me laugh. Ds loves to watch him on YouTube. Thanks for posting this. I knew he was an atheist, but never heard him speak (somewhat) seriously about it. Re: the military discrimination against atheists. That is just so sad. They are protecting our freedoms and being harassed for exercising their own. We don't have any cookies, but I'm planning to bake some tomorrow. I'll be sure to eat some. :001_smile:
  13. I've been wanting to read this, but I also wonder if I could just read his Twitter page and get the gist of it. Wasn't the book based on his tweets?
  14. Fiction: Northanger Abbey (I'm finally reading all of Austen, and this is my favorite so far) Non-fiction: Parenting Beyond Belief, On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion
  15. Oh, why did none of us say we remember when MTV played music videos? I remember watching the "World Premiere" of more than one now-famous music video. Yes, I remember the funeral too. I was young, but I can still hear my grandmother's voice as we all watched it together. We took annual trips from NJ to FL with my brother and me in the back seat. No seat belts.
  16. Oh no! And a few others: I remember spending my allowance to by 45's. If I saved up, I could buy a whole (33 rpm) album. We gathered with all the cousins at one aunt and uncle's house every year for the annual broadcast of Wizard of Oz. They had color tv, so we all went there to be able to see the Oz part in color. Racing home after school to watch Dark Shadows. And the biggie that only a few here (if any) will even remember --- Staying up "late" to watch The Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan. Yes I'm THAT old!
  17. Slowly raising my hand while cringing over the fact that I CAN raise my hand.:001_smile:
  18. I find tinsel distracting. It was on our tree when I was a kid, and my mom was the only one who was allowed to put it on the tree. She did it strand by strand, while the rest of us didn't have the patience for that. She always saved hers, removing it strand by strand, but it finally gave out and it was time to buy more. I didn't realize the old stuff had lead in it, but I do remember my mom complaining that the newer stuff just wasn't the same. We have cats, so I wouldn't use it, but seeing a tree decorated with tinsel brings back memories.
  19. Going to the movies is a treat for us, and so is movie popcorn. If we're going to spend the money on a movie, I figure in the cost of popcorn as part of it. I will stick a couple individual size water bottles in my purse though. There's nothing special about movie soft drinks, and I'm not going to pay outrageous prices for a bottle of water. However, when I was a kid, my mom always snuck in food (including popcorn) for us. I don't have a problem with anyone else doing it. I just don't do it because I want the popcorn they sell.
  20. We have automated collection, so anything I left on the garbage can would get tossed in the truck by the big claw.
  21. I agree. I've been buying and selling (mostly books) on ebay for years, and using paypal. I didn't realize that the personal option didn't give the protection that paying with fees gives. I'll remember that in the future. I've only once ever had an issue. The price of the book I bought was too good to be true, so that should have been a clue, but I bought it anyway and payed with pp. The book never came, the seller never answered emails, so I finally opened a dispute with paypal. Within a few weeks, I had a full refund. I'm sorry you had this problem Nakia. It's...I'm not sure of the right word, but it just makes you feel so let down and disappointed. It's more than just not getting your book. :grouphug:
  22. I have this one. I was worried that it wouldn't last as long as a more expensive brand, but I've had it for over a year and it's still going strong. I don't know how I ever lived without one.
  23. We've used 2 different groomers before our current one, and in both cases they were the owners, so I didn't tip. We are currently happy with the groomer at Petco. I didn't think tipping was the norm in a place like that. Now I'm wondering. The only time I don't tip a hairdresser is if he or she is the owner of the salon. My current hairdresser isn't, so I tip her. I don't tip the postal carrier. We don't really have a regular carrier. It changes so often, that I wouldn't even know who was getting the tip if I left it in the mailbox. I'm currently prescribed physical therapy and massage therapy for chronic back (disc) issues. There are signs in all of the massage rooms stating that because it is a medical facility, tips are not accepted. We usually tip about 18% at a restaurant.
  24. We average $300-$500 a month for 2 adults and a teenage boy. This includes non-food such as household, HBA, pet food and treats, paper goods, etc. Since I buy multiple categories of items at the same stores, I don't separate the food costs from the rest. This is an average, because about few months (it varies) we go to BJ's and stock up on meat, paper products, and a few other bulk items. Those are the months we get closer to $500. I match sales with coupons and use stock-up strategies.
