  1. Not a foster parent but how would I deal with it? I would get him riding lessons ASAP and talk with him about his feelings (then talk some more). The quad bike would be completely off the table despite his previous experience simply because your DS paid for it himself. It's not a "family" item IMO.
  2. Wow. That is disturbing. I'm sorry I don't have any advice. FWIW, my second grader would need to be talked through that. She needs that for all word problems though, they aren't her strong suit. As long as she had hand holding for deciphering the text though, she wouldn't have a problem with the math. Is ESOL an anagram for students whose Rimary home language is not English?
  3. How old was he when you taught him this rule? My three, turning four year old is the overly chatty one in our family. I'm thinking he might be a little young yet.
  4. I think it would be fine. DD went from SM 2B to BA 3A. She's doing fine. I do agree that the first chapter can be difficult though. We did most of the practice pages and then moved on with the skip-counting chaper, filling in one undone geometry page here & there. It's worked well.
  5. My second grader and I are around 1/5 of the way into BFSU 2. We are taking a break, not because we don't like it but because I used it in a very student directed way and her focus has shifted onto a lot of self-directed reading. I think BFSU covered a LOT of material and I'm happy to take the next volume very slowly with lots of rabbit trails. If your children understood everything in BFSU 1, I think they will be fine with 2. It is quite a jump, but to me that just means going slower and deeper to aid understanding :)
  6. I love SSL. My DD really enjoys it. But...I think your elder would definitely roll her eyes. My nearly seven year old enjoys it so much in part because it is by far the easiest thing she does. We do a chapter in two days usually and she could move through it a lot faster if she had any reason to hurry through. For now I want to foster her enjoyment so we just pull it out & do a few pages when she needs a brain break. If your younger is reading well and you want them doing the same thing Minimus might work? We are planning to move onto that in a month or two, then from there probably Lively Latin...
  7. I think it's the same here. I know of very few children who have been grade skipped here in my country, but they are all advanced in LA. The mathematically advanced, average readers usually receive no and occasionally sporadic differentiation from what I can tell. They certainly aren't skipped ahead.
  8. <3 Hanon. It sounds as though you have it figured out. Good luck & have fun.
  9. We did pretty much what StephZ recommended to the point you are at now. After finishing 2B we took a short break to do the first three LoF books and then started BA whilst continuing LoF. BA is really challenging and we both apreciate that. Even if DD is sometimes reluctant to start the practice book (today!). It's like violin practice for her - she is reluctant to start because she knows she'll have to work but once she gets going she enjoys it and afterwards announces p; "That was fun!" (you'd think when she says it everytime she'd remember...). I do think that SM 3 would have seemed like a lot of busy work for DD. We looked at the trial version of SMs new online Math Buddies today & she is done with everything we saw in their yr 3 level. I'm not sure that it's in her best interests to race through curricula levels, even a good one like SM so I'm hoping that the BA/LoF combo will continue to fit for a while.
  10. This. Bill also had very sound advice. I hope following up the 504/advocate thing gives you some leads. I really REALLY hope your DD has a better school year next year!
  11. Hmm, I forgot include that we have done all but two "your turn to play"" sections verbally so far. That might be because it's been mostly review, it hasn't taken DD more than 30 seconds to come up with her answer. Today she wrote down her answers (chapters 10&11 of D) and I plan on asking her to more often as we get closer to her actual maths level but I won't insist on it for another few books.
  12. I read it. DD is more than capable of reading it herself but this way she always does the problems ;)
  13. I love woven wraps and good SoftStructurec Carriers (Ergosare one kind but there are many and different kinds work better for different body types) for heavy bubsand delicate mamas. Please do ask on the babywearer linked above. There is a wealth of knowledge there & porting even someone in your area willing to let you try their carriers before buying your own.
  14. That makes me want to do a happy dance. How fabulous.
  15. I agree. Having worked as a peripatetic music teacher in many schools I need you to know that yes, staff members will lie to protect each other. Since I was usually in a school for no more than two days a week I was often a familiar enough face in the staff room that teachers talked openly in front of me without knowing who I taught or why I was there. I overheard some truly awful things. Things which make me want to scream at you to take your daughter and run. They have already closed ranks around this teacher, even if you do sue you will not get your daughter's educational needs met. Please find her a better situation.
  16. I've worked at a couple of schools in Aus that have a version of this. Lunchtime starts with all students sitting down (outside, on the ground) to eat. After 15 minutes they can get up and play. They can talk though & sit wherever they like. I had not seen even that until I moved to Sydney though, in the two other states I worked in it was as sewing mama described - kids go out to play when the bell rings. If they remember to eat at some point good, if not then too bad for them.
  17. Mine are six & three. Three year old is on the bottom. Ours has high safety rails all around the top with just a small gap for the ladder. It looks more like a cot/crib up there & there isn't really any way they could fall out. DD actually took a long time to sleep up there because it felt like a cage to her.
  18. I agree that he could just keep going through the elementary series (unless he hits a wall) & then start again. My almost seven year old is using Beast Academy as her main program but we started Fred on a break while we waited for BA to arrive. She's in Dogs and it's all been revision so far (apart from the tidbits about calculus etc) but I'd still like to have her reread them as I know she'll get even more out of them a second time.
  19. That's a tough one. Technically, if circumstances prevented buying anymore AND I had access to printing & local library, then I could. I wouldn't want to though. Yes, we have a lot of homeschool stuff but like others I'm not sure we have enough for the rest of the year. My eldest is a leaps & bounds, alternating with periods of stagnation kind girl. Half the time when I buy something she has already outgrown it by the time it arrives & the other half she is just not ready for something that seemed perfect on ordering.
  20. My DD is not quite seven and only one or two years accelerated in math depending on your views on "red-shirting". Back in January when we were finishing up SM2 she was starting to say that she hated it. We switched to Life of Fred and then added in Beast Academy a month ago. Now she loves it more than ever. The problem for us was that I had her treading water. She really was conceptually done with SM2 but I wanted to clear up any gaps. Ugh. Big mistake. I'll try not to do it again, no doubt I will though. I do scribe, however it's gradually becoming less and less. I keep a close eye on how things are going and I'll offer to scribe for a few excercises. I find switching back and forth between her writing and me writing also helps extend her attention span. Definitely a good thing ;)
  21. My second grader (1/4 into our school year) is using: Life of Fred Beast Academy SSL Targeting Handwriting Ambleside 1/2 Self directed science (mostly reading - this child could read about science ALL day) Journaling I need to gather some more resources for history as she wants to study the Tudors and Stuarts (has read the relevant Horrible History books already). I need to find her some more regular chess partners as well. Also violin, piano, choir drama and too many dance classes for her poor long suffering brother.
  22. Ah, more information. Yes, rude. If it was my child I would tell them so. I probably wouldn't be bothered enough to be annoyed, but I would let them know that it was rude. In future I might ask them to say something like; "I really don't feel like more of x dinner, but I'm still hungry. Would you mind if I had some more z snacks?".
  23. Well usually I would feel like this, but it sounds as though the snack foods were still out & available? In which case I guess they were a valid option. I don't think it matters who the cook was - if the snacks weren't an option that should have been made clear with by putting them away or verbally stating that seconds was the option if one was still hungry.
