  1. I jumped through all the hoops (there were a lot) to register DD for ICAS as a homeschooler earlier this year. Then she decided to try school. Her school (Steiner) does not do ICAS. I'm pondering sneakily entering her as a homeschooler - if she wants to when the time comes next year. Ironically no Math Kangaroo in Australia :(
  2. Yes, this. Give her a lists of his interests/favourite topics and write a short summary of skills you know she's covering that he's already mastered. It sounds like she wants to be helpful, lucky you to encounter a helpful teacher :)
  3. Following. My two started in B&M school a month ago after homeschooling from the start. The school is very sweet but it isn't going to meet their academic needs. We are still figuring out our after schooling schedule and DC are still tired etc from the transition. Currently elder does Khan academy once or twice a week when she's not too tired and I do read alouds in the car (DH drives).
  4. We've always home schooled but the DC 8 & 5 both started at a brick & mortar school this week. DS 5 will be fine with just a little bit of literacy extension at home but DD8 is at least two grades ahead of where she will be working at school in math and needs a small amount of constant challenge to stay sane. She's been using BA, SM and Khan Academy at home. I guess it will be easiest to keep up Khan Academy for now. I don't really have questions about materials - I suppose I'm really looking for advice/tips on changing from a home school to a school + after school lifestyle. Especially from BTDT folks. Thanks.
  5. Seeking resources on the Spanish (or other) Inquisition for a sensitive 8 year old please :)
  6. Have a look at the Ambleside lists. Also I second the idea that she may get a kick out if something that "looks" adult (e.g. dusty, thick hardcover), even if it's actually a children's classic.
  7. Great news about the possible adjunct work. Glad it was a good week and that you got off the ledge :)
  8. I wish AusPost had a legitimate forwarding service. I had to order the whole year. DD for to the end of 3B and announced she'd had enough & won't touch it again.
  9. Welcome. I have an asynchronous 8 year old & a mysterious 5 year old. I too lurk on the SN board & have gleaned a lot of useful things from your posts for my elder child. Thanks. Heartily recommend "The Mislabeled Child" as well. I'm about 70% through it & have learnt so many useful things for both DC.
  10. Oh gosh, I agree with this whole heartedly! My second has an explosive temper which brings it's own challenges, but it is my exceptionally bright/exceptionally anxious elder child who takes more than 98% of my parenting energy. We decided to homeschool when she was a toddler - it was already obvious that school would not be a good fit. If my DS had been an only we might never have home schooled.
  11. I had a look at GSWL. "Y'all", really? Some other things in the sample were a bit USA-centric for us. Maybe I'm best just to play around informally until DD is mature enough for Cambridge's content.
  12. I'm stuck too. DD has done SSL and Munimus. She needs something straightforward & work booky but I need hand holding. Video/online based is no good for her atm. Also, she isn't a history buff in the slightest. She would rather study the language without all that boring (to her) extraneous cultural context.
  13. DD did EPGY at 6. It was much better than mathletics for her. It was a pretty good fit at the time (she just turned 8) but that lasted about six months. Khan Academy is suiting her perfectly at the moment but I think we'll be back to BA soon. I've finally accepted that changing curricula often is how it will be.
  14. This is brilliant & may just be the key to where I'm stuck with my eight year old. Thank you!
  15. What does "follow along in math" mean? Does it mean she is supposed to pay close attention to a long explanation of a concept she already understands? I wouldn't want to do that either. I know there are other reasons you don't want to move them, but it really sounds as though your girls would be better off elsewhere.
  16. We find maths is perfect for calming anxiety here too.
  17. My DD is in BA 3 and as sunny day said, all the work she has done on squares and factors would make that not so much of a jump. FWIW, DD has found BA3 slightly harder than SM4 which she has been doing concurrently. I have heard that SM and MM are fairly evenly matched in levels, so perhaps you would be better to start with BA 3 C or D.
  18. I'm at a loss. I have to show a plan for DD8's next two years in a couple of weeks for our registration. I've got nothing. Feeling completely uninspired & soooo unsure of what her pace might be.
  19. An hour's practice a day isn't really passion at the level of the level some posters in this thread are talking about...
