  1. :iagree::iagree: And another reason- After witnessing the appalling methods of reading instruction in ps when my oldest was in K-1, I was determined to get my preschoolers reading before the ps got their destructive hands on them. (This was before we decided to hs, obviously.) Also, my middle dd LOVED worksheets at that age, and asked for them. Especially math.
  2. I much prefer wood floors, and If I were moving into a house with old carpet, I'd install wood or bamboo. I would much rather have the new flooring allowance.
  3. I haven't made this but I've always had good luck with highly rated Allrecipes recipes. This one has 4 1/2 stars with lots of reviews so might be worth a try. Have you used the allrecipes site? I always read the reviews first because there are frequently helpful tips.
  4. Thanks for the suggestions so far. We're in town for a skating competition and will be near the skating rink. (Is there more than one rink? It's near 680 and Pacific St.) We're okay with traveling a little ways though. We'll be eating with the coach and several other families, so it needs to be family friendly. I'd like to have a couple choices to suggest and let them pick. We all like good food and are looking for local places, not chains.
  5. I got great ideas for Chicago restaurants from you guys. Anyone got any Omaha favorites? Thanks.
  6. Conjugation of brake So "I braked the car" would be grammatically correct. But it sounds funny.:)
  7. Here's my favorite beef stroganoff recipe. I use sirloin instead of chuck roast, and only cook the meat for about 10 minutes. I'm sure it would be fine with beans instead of mushrooms.
  8. It isn't a common side effect of vaccines, but it's possible that it's related. Here's an abstract of the only article I could find: It's also possible that it's totally unrelated, and just coincidental, as alopecia does occur spontaneously. I haven't heard about any other cases related to the H1N1 vaccine. Is he seeing a dermatologist?

  10. Depends when his last tetanus shot was. For a wound like this, if he's had one in the last 5 years he doesn't need a booster. If it has been longer than 5 years he should get one within 48 hours. Algorithm
  11. Our only family rule is to treat others, and ourselves, with respect. If we all really did that, we wouldn't need any other rules. 'Course they don't always do it...
  12. We saw Jupiter AND two of its moons with our Galileoscope. Very cool.
  13. Yes, and we're very happy with it. We are TOTAL amateurs though.
  14. :grouphug: If it makes you feel any better I had a crown and crown lengthening (they shaved a bunch of jawbone off to make the crown fit) last fall and my tooth still hurts. I still can't chew on that side, it's still sensitive, and now food gets trapped in all those spaces they created. If I had to do it again I'd just have the sucker pulled.
  15. There are better ways to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes than measuring insulin. ADA 2009: Expert Committee Recommends Use of Hemoglobin A1C for Diagnosis of Diabetes Martha Kerr Here are ADA guidelines: If your fasting blood sugars are normal it would be really REALLY unlikely that you have type 1 diabetes.
  16. Here is some information about diabetes. While it's possible you have type 1 diabetes (where the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin) it isn't very likely, and it's much more likely your naturopath doesn't understand diabetes. Those post prandial glucoses are a little high but they aren't that abnormal. You really need more tests, done by someone with experience in diagnosing and managing diabetes.
  17. I went pillow shopping yesterday and every single pillow was made in China. I found some online but I'm picky and really don't want to order something without seeing it first. For those of you trying to avoid Chinese products, have you found a good brand of pillows available in retail stores?
  18. Elizabeth, have you read Alexander Dolgun's story: An American in the Gulag ? It's an amazing book, and time for me to reread it. Thanks for reminding me.
  19. I have to feed a couple extra kids tonight. I'm making sloppy joes, which I don't eat and almost never cook, so I don't really know what I'm doing here. I cooked the meat then realized I have 2 lbs of meat but only 1 package of sloppy joe mix and 1 can of tomato paste. Is there anything I can add to make this taste right? I really don't want to run to the store if I don't have to. And why do I type sloopy instead of sloppy every. single. time?
