  1. I am looking for something a little more structured and planned out for next year (7th and 9th grades). I am looking at Oak Meadow. We just haven't been able to get it together this year so I really need something that is already planned out for me. Suggestions?
  2. Anyone useing Oak Meadow curriculum for high school? Thoughts? I have a very motivated daughter going into 9th next year and we need something organized and structured that is already planned out...
  3. We used Real Science 4 Kids last year. We especially liked the Chemistry. The experiments were fun and every one worked just as it was supposed to and the supplies were easy to find. Easy to use and follow curriculum. The series seemed to keep my daughter's interest I have a few friends that use the Noeo science and they all love it...I have not used it myself.
  4. We used it last year for 7th grade. My daughter really enjoyed it. (We did not do the video class.) It was a lot of read and answer questions but that works well for my daughter. We did a lot of the experiments - they were easy to follow and you did not need any off the wall stuff. I really liked the student activity pages. I will use it next year for my other daughter but we will use it a little differently as she is not the typical textbook student. I think it is a good solid Life Science class. Would recommend it highly! Loaned to my friend for her son this year and they are enjoying it too!
  5. Live Mocha Anyone currently using this web site? Can you continue with the free version or do you need to pay (I don't mind paying if it is worth it)? Can it be used for high school foreign language? We tried Rosetta Stone and neither daughter liked it at all and we ended up returning it (full refund!). I have put off foreign language for a while but now my oldest is going into 8th grade so I need to do something...
  6. Check with the college that you think you might attend and see what they require. Also, just FYI, some colleges are no longer accepting apolgia sciences for HS credit...
  7. I am using this for 8th grade science for my daughter this year as well. I did purchase the Quest guide (student and teacher) for the first book - Aristotle Leads the Way. It looks a little easy for 8th grade but also very interesting. She is also doing home ec/science of cooking. I hope this is enough for her - she loves science. This was her choice for this year.
  8. My daughter used TT6 and Life of Fred Fractions last year. Life of Fred wasn't for her - too much reading I guess but my other daughter did LOF Fractions and Decimal and Percents for fun before starting TT Alg 1 and she loved them! I think it depends on the child for LOF but both of my girls (and mom) love TT!
  9. We tried Rosetta Stone and both my girls hated it. The company was very good and issued me a FULL refund after 5 months of trying to make it work for us! Now I am looking for a good foreign language curriculum and am thankful for all the great suggestions here.
  10. some colleges are no longer accepting apologia courses as credit towards sciences in HS...
  11. We did BJU Life for 7th this year and my daughter loved it. The experiments were all doable and we even did all the dissections (perch, worm, crayfish, frog). She learned a lot and enjoyed it. Now what to do for 8th...
  12. Has anyone used any program to learn/teach Arabic other than Rosetta Stone? My girls are 5th and 7th grade. Thanks!
  13. Thank you all for your input. It does seem like a lot to pay for only half but I do have a 5th grader who would be able to use it in a few years so that helps. I also wanted to make sure it would prepare her for high school science - she wants to be a vet (this week anyway....).
  14. Is anyone familiar with the Rainbow science for middle school? I looked at the info on the website and it looks good. My daughter is going into 8th grade next year. Would it be a problem if we skipped some parts of Rainbow (Life Science since she just studied it, and Earth Science which she studied all of last year...)? She will finish BJU Life Science this year. We liked the BJU and she is doing well but we are looking for something different next year.
  15. real science for kids chem level 2? we are using level 1. It is not Christian though...
  16. My seventh grade daughter is using BJU life science this year. It is very thorough and she is really enjoying it. I think you could pick and choose what to study from the text for one semister. I got mine used from eBay along with the teacher's guide. Not sure if it is the best choice for you, but thought I would share since we are using it now.
  17. I pulled my daughter out last year in October. I just went in to the school on a Friday with a withdraw letter and took her home. I did not like her teacher much so I did not send a thank you but if you have had a good realtionship with his teacher I think it would be nice to send her a quick email or note. I feel for teachers whose hands are tied to teach to the test so I think she would appreciate knowing that it wasn't anything to do with her personally. We live in PA which is considered a highly regulated state but the school did not give me any problems. You son can still play sports at the public school. Our school district has made a lot of extra curricular activites curricular to keep out the homeschoolers like music, band and drama which my oldest is interested in. Still not worth sending her to school! Good luck!
  18. Rosetta Stone Spanish levels 1,2,and 3! The company (sonlight) did take it back and I got all but $20.00 back. Lifepack Language Arts - did 3 pages and YUCK, SOS 5th grade history - BORING, Abeka World History.
  19. I bought version 3 latin american spanish for my daughters. Neither one liked it. I tried to force my oldest (11) to use it but she hated it. She did not like the pictures and they way it taught. I called the company and I was able to return it for a full refund! So I would say it is worth a try because they guarantee the product and there was no problem returning it after 5 months! I bought a trial of the Pimsleur spanish and we all love it. I also got some workbook for grammar. This seems to be workng for us.
  20. My 11 year old daughter (7th grade) is doing Algebra 1 with Video Text Interactive this year. She is over 1/3 of the way through it with no problems at all.
  21. My daughter is using video text interactive for Algebra 1 this year. She is about 1/3 of the way through it. She is very good at math, but doesn't like it much. I feel it is a good solid math program (I was an engineering major and a math geek in college). She watches a short DVD lesson, takes a review test and then does some problems from the lesson. It is alot of review so I do not have her do all the work, but for a weak math student it would be very beneficial. My youngest daughter is using Teaching Textbooks 6. I am not sure if I will have her use their algebra or not - will wait and see. It is not as thorough as the video text algebra but if she is not planning a math intensive career it would be sufficient for the SAT.
  22. My girls enjoy these alot as well as the mind benders books.
  23. We had the same thing with the spanish. My girls would get so frustrated. I ended up sending it back and got a full refund which I thought was decent of the company.
