  1. Teaching Textbooks is easy to use and reviews basic stuff every lesson. Kids love it!
  2. I bought Rosetta Stone Latin America Spanish for my daughter. She is almost 12 in 7/8 grade and a very fast learner. She HATES it. I have to force her to do it. My other daughter, 10, in 5th grade also did not like it at all either so I told her she did not have to do it. Of course I bought 1,2,and 3 - homeschool version. So I am looking for any suggestions and possibly even a different language program. She took Latin in private school and LOVED it. I really think it is the program and not the language?!
  3. My daughter is using videotext Alg 1 and seems to like it. The first module is mostly review but I made her go through it. It seems to me to be a solid algebra course. I was an engineering major in college and a math geek. My other daughter is using teaching textbooks math 6 but I plan on switching her over to videotext algebra when she is ready because I feel it is more thorough. I have not used the TT algebra so my opinion is just based on the information form the website.
  4. My daughter was the same way at the end of 5th grade. She would write out lists and send me email even snail mail as to why she wanted to be home schooled. We did not know anyone at the time that was homeschooling so I really don't know where she came up with it. I pulled her out for 6th grade and we did a cyber charter school last year. This year 7/8th grade we are doing traditional homeschool. What a relief, no more "I'm bored" all the time. I never would have expected that I would be homeschooling. We now have a large network of homeschooling families and are very busy. It is the best thing I ever did for her and my other daughter who is home as well. Good luck in your decision. Maybe you could find some other home schooling families and talk to them. That was the biggest help for me.
  5. I love teaching textbooks. There are review questions and mental math in every lesson. Also lots of word problem help. My daughter is using 6th grade which is where your daughter would likely be. They have good placement tests on the website.
  6. Thanks for all the info. I am new at this - it is our second year home schooling and last year I used a cyber charter. I am not sure what SOTW (story of the world?) or WTM is. I will look into the geography books - that might be a good route to go and something different for her. She loves to read - especially history so I may need to add to it? My fifth grader is NOT a reader. She reads and comprehends above level but does not like to read so a literature based history program would not work at all for her at this time. I will look up history oddyssy and story of the world and maybe geography. I really feel she should have some US history at this point so I may just stick it out this year with the SOS but we need to change for next year!
  7. Thank you all for your input. My goal is not to have her graduate early as she has already skipped so will she be young when she graduates as it is now. She is very musically inclined and I want her to be able to have time to pursue that avenue as well as the regular academic work. I guess I'll just keep her where she's at and let her work at her own pace. I believe our state requires a grade placement because we have to test in 3, 5, and 8th grades. I may let her take the 8th grade test this spring just for our records and then if we choose to move her we can.
  8. My daughter is 11 (will be 12 next month). She is currently in 7th grade but is doing Alg 1 and 8th grade lit from BJU. She has gone to private school, public school for one year (total waste of time) and this is our second year homeschooling. Last year we used K12 from a cyber school (they wanted to bump her up another grade but I didn't - just in math and reading) but this year we are using a variety of curriculum on our own. My question is this: Should I have her move onto 9th grade next year? I do not want to rush her through school but if she is doing high school work already shouldn't she get credit for it? Thoughts?
  9. Ok, I need some history sugestions for my daughter. She is in 7/8 grade and we were using Abeka World History but she HATES it so I am not going to force her to finish it. She loves history and this is the first time that she ever had a problem. Last year we used the History of Us by Joy Hakim and she got halfway through the series and really liked them so we are going back to them this year I guess. Any better suggestions? Mystery of History? She will likely be in 9th grade next year so I would like something that we can use for HS credit. I also have a 5th grader who does not like history in any way, shape or form and we are struggling to get through US History with SOS. We find it very boring - read the info answer the questions - yuck! I think it will be doable to finish most of it but I don't know what she is really getting out of it. She has no interest in hisory and not much knowledge of it!
  10. We also use the Real Science 4 Kids and she just came out with Astronomy level 1. Great science - daughters LOVE it!
  11. I purchased the teacher manual and the student book. Thank you for all your help. I was looking for something quick and easy for her...
  12. Thank you, that really helps a lot. I will get her the 5th grade book and teachers guide!
  13. Does anyone use Easy Grammar? I am thinking of using it with my youngest in 5th grade but I have no idea where to start. She knows the basics like noun verb subject predicate but not too much else. Do I need to get the teachers guide as well as the workbook?
