  1. :iagree: I was actually molested at age four. It happened with the adult son of one of my mom's friends. He asked me to go downstairs and look at some toys with him, and ended up asking me to touch him. I remember it being an odd, slightly scary experience, and I did tell my mom the next time we were going to this household...apparently I cried and said I didn't want to go there. I think that this was the extent of it. Of course, the friend didn't believe my mom, or I, and said that I was making it up. Needless to say, that was the end of that friendship. Now, I don't know what the appropriate response should have been, but she put me into a therapy group with other girls a couple of years later, and some had been raped and physically abused. I guarantee that it was more horrifying hearing their stories at such a young age than the original incident was. Maybe I needed to talk to somebody about it, maybe not, but this was too strong of a reaction.
  2. I had a previa with my third pregnancy, diagnosed at 15 weeks after some spotting. It did end up moving by my 24th week or so, and I had no other complications....hoping yours will do the same!
  3. Congrats on the baby boy!! All three of my boys were in the 150's and 160's, so I don't know how reliable the heartbeat is for determing the gender.
  4. We love it. In my opinion, people are most vocal about things that they have had bad experiences with rather than postitive ones. I did not care for the elementary years as well, so I using Horizons/MM with my youngest. We're doing great with 76 and 87!
  5. My sons are doing R&S 5 and R&S 6. I've noticed that 6 is much more difficult in certain areas, but we're only 1/4 of the way through the book. I wouldn't skip...there are only 10 levels with R&S, so why rush? Good Luck!!
  6. Thanks for the advice! Any other ideas? This one issue has been driving me crazy over the last few weeks.
  7. I need to supplement writing for my 12 yo and 10 yo. They are using Rod & Staff for grammar, and are doing well, but I'd like to supplement with more writing. My 12 yo is a great writer, but my 10 yo is very reluctant. I'm having trouble deciding between the following choices: IEW Intensive B IEW Ancients since we're doing Ancient History this year Writeshop WWE (Haven't used it before, don't know if 10 yo is too old) MCT (Town or Voyage) Other I would love to hear how these choices have worked with other kids this age! (Both natural writers and reluctant ones) :001_smile:
  8. I was told to start around level 3. My 7 yo is starting 3, so I have them on order right now.
  9. My 12 yo is using BJU, and we really enjoy it!
  10. We already went to our local orchard and filled an entire refrigerator drawer with them! Yum :001_smile:
  11. I ordered a very large collection from Ebay on PDF for $10.00. I have to print everything off now, and bind them, but I figure I'll save in the long run. http://cgi.ebay.com/G-Henty-109-Works-CD-George-Alfred-Henty-books-new-/370263631303?pt=US_Childrens_Books&hash=item56356ea5c7 I usually try to have the physical books in my hand, but just couldn't afford them all right now. My boys are loving them!!
  12. After Saxon 76, did you do 87 or Algebra 1/2? I've heard 87 on this board, but WTM recommended 1/2 if I remember correctly? What are the differences?
  13. :bigear: I've come across that one, as well, and I'm curious.
  14. I was excited to find this board since I'm a newer homeschooling mom, and can relate to a lot of what I've found here. My oldest and youngest sons are very bright children. They had A's in school and have always learned quickly. My middle son (10) is gifted. (I've always felt silly saying that to other parents, but I guess I can say it here. :) While he got A's in academic work in school, I'm sure a lot of you can related to some of the issues we dealt with in school. (Boredom, questioning teachers, frustration with materials......) He's my most difficult...not even close. :tongue_smilie: Now that we're home, it's been wonderful since I can bend his curriculum to where he is comfortable. The problem is with his older brother...2 years older. They are now doing the same levels in Latin, science, math, history and writing. The only subjects they do separate are grammar, logic and spelling. I do so many subjects with them together since they are at the same level, and it's so much easier for me. To tell you the truth, I could even move DS (10) higher in Latin and Science. My oldest DS is showing some frustration at not picking up on things as quickly as his younger brother. This mainly comes out in science. He makes comments like, "Did you memorize the whole book or something?" Now DS (12) is still a straight A student, and tries very hard. It's difficult for him since DS (10) really doesn't put in the effort, and things come easily for him, plus he's much more disorganized, etc. Any ideas on how to approach this issue? I obviously want to do right by both boys. It's so much easier with my youngest since he's a few years off the pace. :001_smile:
  15. My younger son is doing Horizons, and my older two are doing Saxon. First of all, we do prefer the higher levels of Saxon, and that's why we also begin with Horizons. (We do some Math Mammoth, as well) My ten year old DS who was in private school last year (4th grade) tested into Saxon 76 and is doing well, so make sure to do the placement test.
  16. My first grader does about 30 to 45 minutes with both Horizons and Math Mammoth. My older sons do about an hour with Saxon.
  17. Math Mammoth and/or Horizons :)
  18. I also had a good friend hospitalized with a severe kidney infection, so they can be quite serious. I hope you feel better soon!
  19. If you have used these DVDs, what did you think? Could you describe the course? We'd be looking at "B," and I'm just wondering if we should make the investment for my 5th and 6th grade boys. Thanks for any info! :001_smile:
  20. Since it's our first year homeschooling we just started a month and a half ago. My boys are using Rod & Staff for English, and are doing well. My 12 yo is a good writer, but my 10 yr struggles. He's very creative, but just doesn't know how to "start." I had been thinking of using WWE (too old to start?) or IEW, but it seems like MCT is very successful with many families. Or, do I wait it out with R&S? Do you think starting my DS (10) on the Town level would be a good idea? He's not excited about R&S, but it is working. Does MCT give enough writing practice? Is the grammar really very superior? It just seems like if I don't do MCT that I'm depriving him somehow with all the posts about it. BTW, I'm planning on starting my youngest DS on Island when he's in third, as well. I'm doing FLL with him right now. I'm undecided with my oldest DS since he's doing so well with everything. Thanks!
  21. Our biggest hits... Latin! Song School Latin for the youngest, and Latina Christiana for the older two. No, we don't watch the DVDs, since I had some prior Latin experience.
  22. That's what I had mentioned....we do enjoy the extra pages at the back. I just bought mine, so I didn't know that it was just in the newest edition. No wonder some people thought I was crazy, lol.
  23. Thanks! We use ecclesiastical since my older children are doing LC. When I began Song School Latin, I chose ecclesiastical, again, in order not to create confusion. I don't think the transition will be difficult down the road, if it needs to be made.
  24. We use LOF as a supplement to Saxon.
